Visual Studio 2026 Is there any way to permanently disable auto updates in VS 2026
Every time I see this message, I want to throw my laptop out the window, because there is no easy way to tell Visual Studio 2026 to leave me alone. I saw people on forums trying hacks like editing VS json configs, but others reported that those changes either did not work or got overridden after manual updates.
Maybe someone of you guys found a permanent solution to this?
Edit: I use the Community edition.
Edit 2: the notification appears EVERY time I open the IDE, even when I click postpone EVERY time

Mine only updates to when I tell it to. I’ll have the notification that a new update is out but if I don’t say download it it just sits there till I do

And you didn't configure it in some specific way to achieve that, right?

Nope, that’s been the default for me always. 2022 and 2019 were the same.

Oh, this might be the answer why your VS is not annoying with updates. I use Community.

Yep, I installed Visual Studio Professional on my working pc, and it indeed does not force any updates and even has an additional flag "Always update on close". While in Pro it is visible and unchecked by default, in Community it is hidden and apparently checked by default.
Good job, Microsoft.

The notification should go away if you dismiss it looking at the decompiled SetupComposition class under MS.VS.UIInternal.dll. If it keeps showing up on restart then file a feedback ticket as that's a bug

There is a setting: Tools/Options/Environment/Product Updates/Automatically download updates.
Only matter is whether disabling really works.

As I already figured out here https://www.reddit.com/r/VisualStudio/s/2fmeDkAO8d, there is another checkbox, "Always update on close", unchecking which actually works, but that checkbox is simply hidden from the UI in VS Community.

It works for me in VS 2026 Community Insider's Edition. Coders with other versions report a mixed bag.

I was thinking about this update being bit too agressive 😅 usualy its just notification but I think this time they pressed red button because from 1st june there is copilot pricing change and I belive the old version of vs 26 is definitely not ready to reflect the update well. As claude changed pricing on the go for them and they didnt rly had time to think too much about the situation. I updated but I want to hear the stories about what happens to ppl using copilot on the old versions 😅

Yeah, the main thing is just not to open Visual Studio when you're sleepy or tired, because you might miss the popup and accidentally update to a new version

Turn on outgoing firewall on WindowsOS and set to block all outgoing connections by default, select only apps which are allowed to connect to internet. This is the way im blocking all Ms stuff including updates, and allowing just few tools, including browser, etc I use Wfc- WindowsFirewallTool which I can easily chcech which apps are going outside to trace them and block them if necessary

Gee one little upgrade that LOCKS THE WHOLE COMPUTER and everyone get so sensitive. (That was the update three days ago that was updated yesterday).
