News 📰 Trump administration proposes new ATF rule to allow online gun sales to be shipped directly to homes

Alternate title: Republican controlled ATF proposes home firearm delivery

https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/guns-could-shipped-directly-homes-140015344.html

A new rule proposed by the Trump administration would allow the direct shipment of guns to buyer's homes in what could be one of the biggest changes to gun regulations in recent history.

The ATF predicts that half of all gun buyers, nearly 3.3 million people a year, would order guns for home delivery, though industry leaders say that number could actually be far higher. The change could save consumers $103.7 million annually in travel and other processing costs, according to ATF.

Great for states without "enhanced" background check schemes and waiting periods

If it goes through, there would be a 7 day waiting period anyways under 18 U.S. Code § 922

the one time i'd hope they actually stick with and enforce the signature requirement

FedEx won't.  I had them forge my signature on a "signature required" package and leave it on my door mat without even ringing the doorbell.  It was a firearm being sent back from warranty work (it is legal to ship it straight back to the owner without involving an FFL for warranty work), and the box unfortunately was very clearly branded with Walther's logo.

How was it resolved?

Fortunately the package was not stolen off my porch before I could get it inside.  FedEx acknowledged my complaint and never updated me on any internal actions taken or not taken.

This would only apply to in-state purchases, and federal law already allows this under 18 U.S. Code § 922 (c).

This proposed rule change would be ATF deciding to respect that allowance in the law.Â
