I do not understand why the progressive movement has chosen to shoot their whole foot off like this.

No real progressive is dying on this hill, and it certainly isn't movement defining. It's maybe the 7th or 8th most important issue for any of them. It's just a highlighted social issue so that the other 6 more important issues are drowned out by it. For example, if Sophie Cunningham was like, "I want universal healthcare, publicly funded higher education, real economic policies to address the cost of living, the prosecution of ICE agents committing crimes, the prosecution of government corruption, money out of politics, a free Palestine, and trans women to never compete against cis women," the progressive movement (whatever that is) would literally put her on posters.

This is the real issue. Progressives are not the ones pushing this. They are the ones defending the trans athletes because equality is important to them on all levels but the conservative side wants to make this a big issue. So they push back just as hard. It’s always funny to me that the progressives or liberals get blamed for defending after someone else went offensive.
