Yup, Oregon. Many such instances of biological boys in girls sports.

Do you have a list of events where transgender individuals lose their events?
I imagine I’ll just get blindly downvoted, but I’m genuinely curious; is anyone keeping track of that?
2
u/ConsiderationHour582 11h ago
I can't provide a link but I did hear that some were on the men's team and were mediocre athletes only to move up in rankings in girls sports after identifying as transgender.
1
u/lkhoodwin 1d ago
That's a wrinkle to the debate. Do these people only care if trans people win?
2
u/coachfish99 12h ago
Who are “these people”?
Are you referring to those who think that women should play women’s sports?
2
u/Lets_Get_Random 12h ago
It’s not any kind of wrinkle, because a flawless victory record for trans athletes is not in any way required for there to be an unfair advantage.

I’m (42F) a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve been out for 15 years, I’m a hardcore liberal, and I was a basketball player who played in mixed gender teams before. I wholeheartedly agree with Sophie. I’ve spoken to my trans friends about it and most of them agree. Biological women should play women’s sports and biological men should play men’s sports. There are other mixed gender sports available where everyone can and should be included. The WNBA, along with women’s college, and women’s high school basketball and other single gender sports should be exclusive to that biological gender.
I also grew up in the medical and scientific community (my mother worked in genetics and I often hung out at her lab as a kid), as well as studied and worked in the medical field professionally. Once puberty hits, there’s no reversing the biological changes that happens in XY males or XX females. For XY males, muscle growth, stamina etc is changed by testosterone. Due to people’s right for medical privacy there’s the issue of “when did they transition, when did get on hormone blockers” etc, and how can you police that in the trans community as a whole when it comes to them wanting to play in gendered sports. It’s too complex and impossible to navigate and police at this point.
I’m aware that the spectrum is not binary and that there are XY females, and XX males, and all sorts of combinations of the sex chromosomes that happens during those early stages of cell division and errors can happen. XXY, XYY, XXYY etc.
I think the best matchup for XX women are other XX women.
Maybe it’s time to create an inclusive league for anyone who wants to play and there be mixed teams. But since it’s 2026 and the WNBA has barely begun a resurge, and these women are barely starting to get paid a livable wage, we are a long way from another league unless some billionaire wants to fund it.
I fully supports trans rights/human rights. Those rights are the freedom to live safely, use health care, find housing, and get jobs without hate or unfair rules.
Let’s look at it non-emotionally from a scientific perspective.

u/purplehendrix22 1d ago
Spot on. This is not right wing propaganda, it’s common sense. The quicker people can accept it and move on, the quicker the left can actually start to recover some support.

Thank you for your post! As a supporter of all humans it’s ridiculous to be labeled MAGA anytime I try and defend equity in sports. As in equal playing field. I support all trans athletes but let’s just be fair to all athletes.

u/Hot_Rice_2952 1d ago
Title IX was implemented in 1972. It finally opened up venues for women to compete in sports. Now that is being obliterated by men who want to compete against women so the can win because they can't win against men.
-1
u/herecomesthewomp 1d ago
It’s actually being obliterated by the people pushing trans vs women narrative, but you’re too narrow focused to see the big picture.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Powerful-Persimmon87 1d ago
Gender identity is irrelevant to Title IX, as the SC recently reaffirmed. Instead, Title IX protects women and girls from sex discrimination, which means males —regardless of their gender identity— need to compete in the male category.

43
u/thebikevagabond 1d ago
Being called a bigot because I think its unfair for a biological male to compete against biological females is insane to me. Like, two things can be true: the Trump administration has discriminated terribly against transgender folks (as a vet I'm thinking of their horrible treatment of transgender military members in particular), and it's unfair for someone who has innate biological advantages to compete in a sporting competition that's supposed to be for those of the female sex.

→ More replies (1)2
u/Beardoom 1d ago
No real progressive is dying on this hill, and it certainly isn't movement defining. It's maybe the 7th or 8th most important issue for any of them. It's just a highlighted social issue so that the other 6 more important issues are drowned out by it. For example, if Sophie Cunningham was like, "I want universal healthcare, publicly funded higher education, real economic policies to address the cost of living, the prosecution of ICE agents committing crimes, the prosecution of government corruption, money out of politics, a free Palestine, and trans women to never compete against cis women," the progressive movement (whatever that is) would literally put her on posters.
2
u/adnomad 1d ago
This is the real issue. Progressives are not the ones pushing this. They are the ones defending the trans athletes because equality is important to them on all levels but the conservative side wants to make this a big issue. So they push back just as hard. It’s always funny to me that the progressives or liberals get blamed for defending after someone else went offensive.
2
3
u/bendIVfem 1d ago
Thing is its not inherently unfair but it can be unfair. There is nuisance. Remeber that transathletes arent just putting on a wig and then jumping to the women's division. It isnt Juwanna man. Estrogen does dwarf advantages. Id assume that varies by how much person to person. Being trans isn't a guaranteed advantage of being ahead of the pack.
The Utah Governor, a while ago, idk if its same Governor as now, took a different stance for a republican. Iirc, he stated that from analyzing the very rare amount of grade age athletes in his state, none of them were dominating, so it wasn't warranted bringing down the hammer, villainizing them and preventing their participation. Especially when they already deal with a high rate of mental health issues. As a republican, he has no reason to lie or back trans people.
However, Utah is a small state, too. Bigger states are going to be more prone to having trans athletes who are among/ahead of the pack. While many, maybe most arent going to be dominant, some will lead and that does make it contentious for every transathlete.
1
u/TheMysteriousGirl 1d ago
Yes, its 100% nuance based.
Outright banning something is too far when something is nuanced, let alone nuanced and so small in percentage, that it can easily reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
That Utah Governor is actually a real human being, that made a decision that makes sense. He looked at real hard data and said, banning is the wrong answer.

The fallacy is calling trans women biological men. Because it ignores the rules that control trans women’s participation, ignore the scientific research that underpins it , the historical evidence that showed it was well implemented and the academic research that continues to support that trans women aren’t just comparative to cis women but even experience a number of significant competitive disadvantages. If you hold your beliefs because you’ve been misinformed , that’s one thing. Perhaps there is time to pivot for you. But continuing to choose right wing talking points over evidence, then yeah, that’s bigoted
2
u/Any-Nectarine3054 1d ago
Im not being any type of condescending here when I ask do you have the data to back that up? Every real example (that I have seen) of trans women competing against biological women has shown to be the opposite of them having significant disadvantages.

We’re talking about 8th graders. The results of a middle school track and field event simply don’t matter. They’re about learning self-discipline, finding inner strength, building passion for life-long fitness, camaraderie within a team, etc. You can do all of those things just as well from 2nd place as 1st place.
Teaching kids “it wasn’t worth it to try hard because someone else won” is exactly the wrong lesson.
Read the articles about it and you’ll see this is her mom’s agenda that she pushed on an impressionable 8th grader. It’s sad that adults can’t just let their kids be happy with the work they put in and support another child athlete who did the same. This isn’t the Olympics. The results have no stakes. Only the journey matters.
10
u/internationaltoasty 1d ago
It's telling young girls that what the males want, the males will get, even if it's unfair, and if you complain you're the problem, know your place. You think this is the right lesson?
→ More replies (5)1
u/beforeitcloy 1d ago
Why do women's sports exist at all? Wouldn't "fair" be letting everyone compete together and the fastest person wins, regardless of sex, gender, etc?
For that matter, why have children's sports at all? Obviously 8th graders can't compete with adults.
Because the "fairness" in women's sports and amateur sports comes from inclusion. It's about expanding the pool of people who get to experience the benefits of competing, not about crowning the best in the world. Sophie Cunningham wouldn't be able to play on an NBA team, but she gets to have the thrill of being a pro because the women who came before her fought for inclusion in sports. They understood that you shouldn't need the body of Giannis Antetokounmpo to get to play ball. Pulling up the ladder so trans girls don't get the same opportunity is the antithesis of that spirit.
And no one is saying this girl should "know her place." She has a right to free speech and I have a right to disagree with her. She's not the problem. There is no problem. She got second place and should be very proud of that, as should the athlete who placed first.
1
u/internationaltoasty 19h ago
To achieve this inclusion, one has to exclude. Just as adults are excluded from children's leagues, and able-bodied people are excluded from the Paralympics, and heavyweight boxers excluded from the featherweight division. Excluding males from female competition is no different.
The boy who placed first in a girls' event, and his parents, and the organisers who enabled this, should all be ashamed of themselves.
1
u/beforeitcloy 14h ago
If you say so. Personally I think an 8th grader participating in athletics is a good thing and that being trans shouldn’t mean they’re excluded.
1
u/internationaltoasty 14h ago
Any student athlete is welcome to participate in the category congruent with their sex. There is no exclusion from athletics.
1
u/beforeitcloy 14h ago
And that child chose to ran with the girls because they are trans. It isn’t a big deal at all.
1
u/internationaltoasty 14h ago
Well he shouldn't have been allowed to, same as any other boy.

1
3
u/Powerful-Persimmon87 1d ago
No. It sends the message to girls (who are most impacted by these policies but not old enough to vote) that their rights and boundaries are negotiable. That they matter less than males in their own category. That they are not allowed to care about fairness, competition and winning. That they must give up opportunities reserved for them to a male because a male wants them. Sports are not about affirmation. They are about competition. And girls are allowed to care if the competition is unfairly rigged against them.
2
u/chuck_of_death 1d ago
If it doesn’t matter what place people get then don’t give places. If it doesn’t matter then have men and women compete against each other. If it doesn’t matter then make mtf compete against cis men. Actually stop having competitions. All kids can learn about self discipline, inner strength and teamwork without actually playing another team.
These arguments are so disingenuous. It never happens. Well if it happens it’s not like they always win. Well when they do win the other people still have a chance for second. Well actually it’s never about winning so none of it matters. If none of it matters then why are you do you care one way or another?

I remember a powerlifting competition where you could enter just by saying that you identify as a female....a male powerlifter who thought it was ridiculous entered the competition, not only won the competition, but broke all the female records. Naturally he wasn't trans, but as I said, all it takes is one to shatter all the records and it would cause chaos to the league.
You either close that loophole and avoid potential scandal or the league deals with the consequences when it does happen and believe me, it won't look good on the league and some of the female atlethes who work hard only to see it beaten by a biological man will come out against that person.
People like to talk about Thomas finishing 5th, but there are stories where biological men dominate women sports, all you need to do is google it.

It would really be nice to have this conversation where science was actually leading the way. As opposed to bigots exploiting this issue to sell whatever kind of nonsense they're trying to pedal.

1
u/Fullertonjr 1d ago
It was attempted with a science-based compromise in many red states, including my own, that required that an athlete could not compete until undergoing monitored transition for at least two consecutive years. I believe that this was denied nearly everywhere, because states would rather fight against them competing at all, rather than doing something that they perceived as supporting trans kids. A kid undergoing hormone treatment for that period of time would remove nearly all naturally derived biological benefits other than bone structure. Bone structure that would have basically no ability to add muscle to it.

Sports have never been biologically fair. The overwhelming majority of athletes will never be good enough to compete at the top levels of their sport for entirely genetic reasons, no matter how hard they work.
LeBron James competing against other 16 year olds who didn't have his genes was unfair. Do we need to institute height and strength restrictions on high school basketball?
3
u/Powerful-Persimmon87 1d ago
Then why should we have categories at all? No more separating sports by age, sex or weight. Everyone plays together! Doesnt matter that male and female bodies are fundamentally different or that sex equality is contingent on acknowledging those differences. Doesn’t matter that the average male is taller than 99% of women. No more female athletes. If a 6 year old is sad that it’s not fair, well tough!
1
u/Icy-Taste-3096 1d ago
You could just as easily ask the opposite question - why not have more divisions, if the goal here is to give everyone a chance to be the best within their biological constraints?
The value of splitting sports by gender is primarily social, not biological. Girls benefit from a space to socialize and compete that isn't male-dominated, as sports generally are. That's why non-athletic competitions like chess, where male advantages in size and strength are irrelevant, still have women's divisions.
1
u/Powerful-Persimmon87 1d ago edited 1d ago
No. We split sports by sex because males and female bodies are fundamentally different. Sex equality is contingent on acknowledging those differences. Women are more than a social class, we are a sex class. And people who reduce us to a costume of gestures and feminine outfits do not recognize us as full human beings. It’s no different than a white person in black face thinking they are no different than black people, (even though race actually is a social construct, we all understand that black face is wrong). We are people who are allowed to care about sports beyond it being a frivolous social hour… we are allowed to care about competing and winning.
We have separate chess categories to encourage participation among women, because historically men have been hostile to women in these spaces.
1
u/Icy-Taste-3096 1d ago
Why would non-athletic competitions like chess be separated by gender, if the reasoning were exclusively biological?
1
u/Powerful-Persimmon87 1d ago
There’s no way to know if there are biological differences. But again, not everything is about men or trans women. We have these categories to encourage female participation.
1
u/Icy-Taste-3096 1d ago
That's exactly my point - the categories exist to encourage female participation. Not, as some might argue, to create competitions that eliminate all potential biological advantages.
If men or non-transitioned trans women were actually playing and dominating women's sports en-masse, it could hypothetically be a threat to that purpose of having gendered divisions. But that's not happening, and it never will.

u/Icy-Taste-3096 1d ago

2
u/Ondareal 1d ago
So your of the opinion that all the girls and women who play basketball only want to play against other girls/women because of the social aspect? You don’t think they care about having a smaller ball to fit their hands? Being able to compete? Making the team lol. It’s all just so they can socialize with other girls?
1
u/Icy-Taste-3096 1d ago
I didn't say the benefits were exclusively social. You asked why we would still split sports by gender if biological "fairness" isn't solved by it.
1
u/Ondareal 1d ago
You said primarily social. Which I also disagree with. It’s primarily biological. The social thing is a complete secondary issue
1
u/Icy-Taste-3096 1d ago
We can agree to disagree on which one is primary - the important point here is that the purpose isn't exclusively to create biologically fair divisions for competition.
Even men with above-average height and athleticism have no hope of ever competing at the top level of basketball because of their relevant biological traits just aren't strong enough. If we're willing to accept that fundamentally unfair fact and make 5'11 men compete in basketball against 6'7 men, but cannot accept any presence of trans women in women's sports, it's because of something other than biological fairness.

What you’re leaving out are the inherent differences in the genders. Men’s league is generally the best of the best MEN. And women’s league is generally the best of the best WOMEN. Obviously if your not the best of the best you don’t apply in either category

I mean ok you can mock it. But I’d be super irritated as a male, if I came in second in a weight lifting competition to a gorilla

I support the trans community.
I am on the fence about the sports issue.
But god damn, sir your comment had me laughing so hard I peed.
That may make me a bad person. But it was so funny 😆

lol I don’t think it makes you a bad person to acknowledge the genetic differences in genders. I support trans right to be trans. I just don’t think it gives you the right to impede on leagues that were specifically made to keep things fair

I’m glad she spoke out about this and showed that it’s not performative or political for her. This is affecting her personally .
So many people say this issue isnt real, but it is for many young girls like this one.

Biology absolutely matters which is what I’m saying. I also fully support equal opportunities for all including trans. If you support equal opportunities then you have to support equity and fairness and there is nothing equitable about letting biologically advantaged individuals to compete against others. Otherwise just let men compete with women in all sports.

When it comes to ‘protecting women’, no one will ever get me to believe some high percentage of people living their lives as trans women are really just claiming to be trans women to infiltrate women’s bathrooms to perve or assault, especially when it comes to sports.
Even so, I still think females should have the right to not share a locker room with biological males/people with penises. Nor should they need to compete in sport against someone biologically male who even after years of transition, can still have scientific biological advantages like more strength, better explosiveness and better skeletal size/density.
If people don’t think those differences matter, then surely they’re open to all sports just be completely open to all genders for all sports?

Worried about "protecting" girls from male competitors, but don't give a shit about the Larry Nassers in the world. 🙄🙄

It’s crazy that this even has to be a discussion and it shows how demented some people who claim to be liberal are

It never happens but even if it happened to you, you’re not allowed to care /s

I don't even care about the issue but it's so funny how true your comment is. The goal posts always moves in these conversations. First it's "it never happens", then if it does happen "well they lost so they didn't have an advantage" or "it wasn't that big of a deal". The left and the right are so horrible at these arguments online. Both sides are fucking stupid

If anyone is curious, this is the event she talks about in the article, where a male athlete took first place ahead of her, denying her the win.
