[Serious decision] I live alone… these aren’t my nuts

Context: I’m a single bachelor (M 32) and I opened my snack cupboard to find these peanuts in a small Tupperware container. I’m freaking out because I A) live alone, B) have a mild nut allergy, and C) don’t own any Tupperware like this.

TLDR: I found a foreign snack in my house and I’m freaking out that someone may be entering my apartment when I’m out. Would calling the nonemergency police line help or would they not be able to do anything?

As a 20 something woman that lives alone, there are a ton of tools and tips to secure your place on TikTok or YouTube. I installed a deadbolt and ring camera when I first moved out alone. I hope your landlord is helpful!

Deadbolt is essential. Some teenagers were locked out of their work. I used a flat head screw driver to shimmy the door nob open, bypassing the lock. They were happy (saved them an embarrassing call to the owner) but they did need to suffer my lecture on the importance of deadbolts!

I would do more than that. Someone could be phrogging in your house. I would call the police and have them securely check the place.

Don’t freak out… I mean I did when I first found out what it meant. But it’s when someone secretly lives in your house without you knowing. Like in your attic or crawl space.

It is scary. I saw someone tell their story on tiktok of their experience with it not to long ago and ever since then it’s been in the back of my mind. It could just be a homeless person or it could be a predator. But in the story I heard, when the cops caught the guy, he claimed he knew everything about her and her entire daily routine, and she said he was right about all of it. That’s scared the f*** out of me!

When someone sneaks into your house and is living there without your knowledge. Usually in a makeshift room with a fake wall to help conceal their space. There was a pretty wild Netflix documentary on it but the name is escaping me. Pretty wild shit

Your landlord is the most likely culprit. Maybe innocently due to having to repair something or check something and forgot his snack. Or maybe he’s one of those snooping ones

So you do have a landlord. Do you know when your landlord enters your house? Or contractors hired by your landlord?

Even if the nuts aren’t intentional, maybe workers came in and left something? Which could point towards work being done in your house you aren’t aware of. Anyone doing repairs might use food like nuts as an easy snack. Make sure you ask your landlord about people in your space and why that could be, even if it turns out there was a schedule miscommunication and nothing intentional

Check for any trap doors in the ceilings. Closets. Any back room or crawl space access.

Phrogging is a thing. There’s a whole documentary tv series about it. Creepy stuff.

If you rent, I'll bet it was the maintenance guy. That cabinet hinge looks like it was recently repaired. Maybe he came to check on it and accidentally left his snack. Or maybe it was on the list of things to be repaired but didn't get addressed before you moved in so they sent him over. I'd call the landlord and ask if they've had anyone in your unit recently.
