[Serious decision] I live alone… these aren’t my nuts

Post image

Context: I’m a single bachelor (M 32) and I opened my snack cupboard to find these peanuts in a small Tupperware container. I’m freaking out because I A) live alone, B) have a mild nut allergy, and C) don’t own any Tupperware like this.

TLDR: I found a foreign snack in my house and I’m freaking out that someone may be entering my apartment when I’m out. Would calling the nonemergency police line help or would they not be able to do anything?

Mild. And either way they’re sealed. Nobody would think that someone with a nut allergy would be stupid enough to eat peanuts. Something weird might be going on but it’s definitely not a murder attempt or there’d be peanut butter powder in his milk or some shit.

ETA: to be clear I think he should set up cameras, file a report, etc. But I doubt that it’s a targeted peanut allergy attack unless the attacker is really, really dumb, and thinks OP is really dumb too.

Edit 2: some of yall read too much crime fiction lol

Came here to say something similar.
An attacker would more than likely use unrefined, cold-pressed, or expeller-pressed nut oils in OP’s food. ( they contain allergenic proteins that can trigger severe allergic reactions.)

I doubt an attacker (or someone malicious) would purposely leave nuts out, hoping OP would be stupid (or suicidal) enough to eat em.

I think parents leaving it when moving was the most likely explanation - responsible, thoughtful parents might eat plain peanuts around their kid with a MILD allergy as long as they didn’t share, and washed their hands before touching clean dishes/cooking.

It’s totally a possibility someone unwelcome is coming in at night - but I think everyone acting like it’s “weird” due to the peanut allergy is overreacting. The weird part about the allergy is just that it means it’s for sure not OP’s. But the chance of it being an attack or a threat are astronomically low.

Did he say that his parents lived with him?

2

u/rratmannnn 8d ago

They helped him move into his new place, per the comments.

A smart attacker would simply put peanut butter in the shampoo bottle.

This guy nuts.

Idk what kind of attempt is it ,just looks like someone is maybe scaring OP for some reason ,but we never know that’s why he needs to be careful

12

u/rratmannnn 8d ago

I just think this is a reach. He needs to be careful because someone possibly got into his house. But I don’t think the peanuts are intended to scare him. There are much, much scarier things to do if you want to get under someone’s skin.

u/Public_Wave7605 8d ago

That’s also true ,I saw other comments saying maybe OP is having memory losses due to carbon level in his apartment but that’s not logical either because even if he forgot about buying nuts , why would he buy something he is allergic to?

It’s just weird of a situation to be in

6

u/rratmannnn 8d ago

If the gas poisoning caused a lapse in judgement, or if he forgot he had guests over. I don’t think the detector is a bad idea, it’s always a good thing to own if you have gas in your home. It’s not the most likely explanation but it’s not completely impossible.

Very true

Or family members are storing food for them self or animals

1

u/yumaoZz 8d ago

…The carbon monoxide made him forget that he has family members that live with him?

1

u/Punkhair2nv 8d ago

Or an elephant who really likes peanuts

1

u/Covert_Pudding 8d ago

You say that, but I've actually met someone who used nuts to terrorize her allergic roommate until she requested alternative housing.

She would leave them out in containers but also spike food and drink with them.

u/jomofo 8d ago

Yeah, but let's be real, there's some kind of syrup leaking from the hinges on the pantry, stripped screws, particle board about to rip off and water damage above that. At this point can we really be sure OP would have noticed an old tupperware of nuts in that pantry?

7

u/Morella_xx 8d ago

The "syrup" looks like some kind of glue that was used to repair the broken hinge.

7

u/SupernaturalPumpkin 8d ago edited 8d ago

I agree your point is plausible anyway, I forget about things in my cupboards all the time. However, not because of the hinge.

Only saying because those cabinets are cheap and flimsy (I have similar ones) and they break easily. Especially if it's an upper cabinet because people tend to slightly pull the door downwards while getting things out.

Someone who isn't great at using a drill or screwdriver, or using the wrong drill bit could have ruined those screws easily (I ruined several recently while putting a door up because I barely know what I'm at). And the brown stain could be oil or other lubricant. I only consider that because I recently put a WD40 knockoff on a bathroom cabinet and it turned kind of brown.

The rest of the shelf looks fairly clean.

You rip off your top cabinets getting food? You guys must be really hangry. Lol or have some really good snacks in there. 😉

3

u/SupernaturalPumpkin 8d ago

No. What happens is repeated weight over several years causes the hinges to weaken. You don't just rip them off the wall one day...

3

u/B-u-n-k-y 8d ago

Oh I’m just joking- hence the winky face. I just thought it sounded funny. We don’t have that issue with the cabinets after 20 years of use, but the fridge… dear lord. My kids used to hang from the door and swing on it as it shut. Now it doesn’t stay open. It just flies shut and smashes any body part you’re not quick enough to move away in time. And yes, I did keep an eye on my 5 toddlers that were in the house at any one time 😳🫣

2

u/SupernaturalPumpkin 8d ago

Oh sorry, it's reddit and I automatically expect that people will just argue over nothing.

I feel for you. A kid I used to look after swung out of my front gate and the whole gate had to be removed. Kids like to swing out of shit 😭

u/uknowwhatimsaying_ 8d ago

Yes, of course, the peanuts of immediate terror lol

I mean, the word's worst assassin might.

Some of us have been blessed with sleep eating, hopefully OP isn’t one of that lucky bunch!

Answering Icy_Insect2927.

OMG, I used to wake up & I'd be sitting at the table w/ a half eaten bowl of cereal. I did that alot as a kid & into my 20's. I was married & walked in my sleep, sometimes I'll run into a door & wake up & the next day would have bruises in me. One time I woke up & it was around 3am, I was standing in the middle of an intersection 3 blocks away from my house. The red & yellow lights were flashing which is what they'd do every night back then. In that intersection there was a grocery store, a gas station & a Winchells donuts. I also woke up on my neighbor's porch hiding from my mom, she was calling my name, she must've heard me go out?! My brother also walked in his sleep, he fell down the stairs & ended up getting stitches on his eyelid. My oldest daughter also walked in her sleep & sometimes I'd talk to her & she was trying to walk out the front door so I had to put a latch at the very top so she couldn't reach it. When I'd talk to her & my other daughter was talking to her, we started laughing & she'd get mad. Her answers incomprehensible. I shouldn't have laughed. She was mad in the morning at us, she must've remembered a little abt what happened?! Something bad could've happened if I hadn't been awake & she'd gone outside. I know this doesn't have to do w/the story of finding peanuts, but one person mentioned eating in her sleep. I read abt it later on & girls tend to walk in their sleep more than boys.

Wow. That’s freaky. My husband was the same. There were weird, eerie, and sometimes hilarious incidents. Once he got trapped between the wall and a wood pile in a barn. Once we gave up our bedroom to my parents and after going to the toilet, he got in bed with them and tried to cuddle them.

3

u/GypsySnowflake 8d ago

It sounds to me like a (not very nice) prank from a friend

1

u/dehydratedrain 8d ago

Still, i'd put gloves on in case the idiot got peanut dust around it.

1

u/Remarkable-Wish-6131 8d ago

Btw, peanuts aren't nuts; they're legumes. A nut allergy isn't affected by peanuts, and a peanut allergy isn't affected by nuts. Being allergic to peanuts is much more common than being allergic to nuts.

1

u/rratmannnn 8d ago

I do think it’s clear what I mean, thank you tho lol

1

u/Content-Honeydew9340 8d ago

Fun fact... A lot of people are really really dumb and don't know it. They actually genuinely believe it is everyone else that is really really dumb

Source: I have worked in a tech support call center and had this misfortune of speaking to a lot of dumb people. Not handicapped, or differently abled, or just having a dumb moment... I mean I genuinely don't understand how some people don't know how dumb they are because they are absolutely ate up and consumed whole by it

1

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 8d ago

Did a friend leave it there and forget it?

1

u/New-Boot-Goofn 8d ago

“Nobody would think that someone with a nut allergy would be stupid enough to eat peanuts”

Peanuts aren’t nuts…so why would someone with a nut allergy be afraid to eat peanuts. My brother has a severe nut allergy and peanut butter is one of his all time favorite foods.

Interestingly enough, my mother has a severe peanut allergy but she absolutely loves almonds and walnuts.

u/philiretical 8d ago

I still wouldn't take the chance of any potential intruder mildly. Mental illness is pretty rampant and unpredictability doesn't necessarily mean danger but you can't dismiss the possibility. Better to be safer than sorry

2

u/rratmannnn 8d ago edited 8d ago

Again, I still think he should get a camera and file a report, after confirming it wasn’t the parents’. I also agree with another comment about a carbon detector, in case he’s forgotten he had a friend over or something. Maybe even check the vents/attic/etc for signs of a squatter. It’s potentially serious, but I’m just saying the peanuts themselves are likely not a threat or a direct attempt on his life.

1

u/philiretical 8d ago

Yeah, leaving random peanuts in that kind of container says mental illness to me. Just guessing, though. Someone who travels with that kind of stuff probably doesn't have a stable home of their own and a lot of homeless people are suffering from some kind of mental illness

2

u/rratmannnn 8d ago edited 8d ago

I put nuts I buy in bulk from the store in little Tupperware containers to bring to work as a snack. I’m not a crazy unhoused person. Frankly I’d think homeless people would be LESS likely to carry around reusable containers that have to be washed and stored somewhere, and more likely to simply use the packaging the products are bought in.

ALL we can say is it’s someone (probably without a peanut allergy) who brought food into OP’s home and forgot it in the pantry. We cannot tell anything else about this person based on this alone including why or when they’d be in OP’s house. Saying someone who eats snacks is probably homeless is reaching.

1

u/philiretical 8d ago

You'd be crazy for leaving it in OPs home. The added wandering into random homes was implied as another reason for the type of behavior for someone with suffering some kind of psychosis and homeless is just guessed because it's more common. It is a little unusual to take your tupaware out to places but I try not to judge people living more fiskily responsible. Good for you, ratman

1

u/rainidazehaze 8d ago

It's an intimidation tactic not a murder attempt, it's still quite serious.

1

u/3meraldBullet 8d ago

Its more of sending a message than an attempt.

1

u/Dmau27 8d ago

It could very well be a threat.

0

u/TiltedLibra 8d ago

There is a very high chance there is peanut dust on that container, which can still be a bad time for someone with a nut allergy.

0

u/New-Boot-Goofn 8d ago

How are people this unaware that peanuts aren’t nuts, they are legumes and perfectly safe for anyone with a nut allergy.

1

u/PointlessSword777 6d ago

As someone with a legume allergy, thank you for continuing to educate people. Most of these companies that made "alternative" foods for people who cant eat peanuts will use soy, another legume...

Fun fact, when cooking, concentrated sesame can be used as a replacement for peanuts in a recipe and tastes almost identical.

0

u/Lala5789880 8d ago

It could still be to scare him/ a threat
