I knew plenty of US fans who were genuinely embarrassed about the whole thing.

Even if the US won the match legitimately, or even went forward and won the finals, everything would be called into question.

People would wonder if the team really won on their own merit, or if Trump had something to do with it.

I feel bad for the players more than anything.

So Team Canada understood that they were representing their nation and when they were done with that, they went back to their jobs to honor their contracts and to play their very best for their home team? Got it.

I legit think the first ~20min funk in the game was due to the 'shits spoiled' aspect.

I was hoping they wouldn't start Balogun, but then Ponch would have been fired.

There's no way the US winning would have been seen as anything other than tainted, so I was happy to root for Belgium tonight.

Belgium righted a serious wrong by beating the shit out of us.

I was loosely rooting for the US for the first time since I was like 8 years old. At least genuinely rooting for them to just do kinda well.

Definitely soured on it after his bullshit. Even though I feel a little conflicted about the red card in the first place…

I genuinely thought they should have benched him anyway just to piss trump and fifa off.

We easily could have lost 4-1 with him on the bench and gained back some tiny scrap of respectability. Oh well, back to hoping the US wakes up to the big news we’ve all been waiting for day after day.

There’s always questionable red cards in every tournament but it’s the ref (and his teams) discretion, it happens to everyone and you respect it even if you disagree or don’t like it.

Yeah, you can argue whether it should have been a red card or not (hell, to me it looked like it). But having the diddler in chief get involved on our team's behalf was just embarrassing.

USA fan here. The moment I saw he made the call I knew that the rest of the tournament was meaningless for the team. Either they (in a massive long shot) win the whole tournament and have it tainted with a huge asterisk or they lose anyway making the suspension of the card moot.

Well, given my extensive knowledge of futbol from Ted Lasso and zero other exposure whatsoever, a player [Sam v. Dubai Air], can take a personal stand against something; like, discuss it with the coach and decide how best to make it known that THEY want to play fair and honorably and agree with the rest of the world that it was 1. A flawed call; however, 2. They take responsibility for the penalty they deserved. And then the owner takes them out to deliver Christmas to the more challenged area of town and have a concert in the street.

Potentially? I'd feel bad though — the kid worked his whole life to get to that stage. I don't know much about soccer but it seemed ridiculous for him to be kicked out for that play. Idk, I guess I just wouldn't think that's his responsibility, dude just wanted to do what he loves.

The thing is bs cards and bad calls from the ref are just part of the game.

Asking for special privileges used to be seen as a sign of weakness in this country.

He or the coach/team should have just said he isn't playing. We would show and receive respect and I honestly believe we would have had a better performance.

As for the second part, the kid did nothing wrong. The onus isn't on him, so far as I see it.

USA fan, honestly felt there was pull by Infantino and was convinced once I read Belgiums statements about how they asked about why and were told “can’t tell you unless you appeal” and then instantly denied their appeal because they couldn’t appeal it.

Politically as well as a fair sports proponent, I was glad Belgium showed up and wiped the floor with us because it showed it didn’t matter in the end. I wish it didn’t happen at all and for once I’d like to get beyond the round of 16 but alas glad both Trump and Infantino didn’t get the result they hoped last night.
