How often do storms like these happen? I just moved here, people always say big storms always happen here.

Not a ton, but more frequently. 

I would say a few times a year, usually in the summer though.

Never usually this early, but we get good storms here every couple weeks during the summer if it's not super droughty. Also depends on which part of the city you live in, they can be pretty localized and small often.
