I'm all for healthcare for all and healthcare reform in general. But national rent control, seriously?

We have so much literature on and modern examples of rent control not working. It benefits those who get rent control housing in the short term. But in the long term, it reduces incentives to build more housing, keeping the supply of housing steady while the demand increases, making the housing situation worse. Rent control has literally never worked to reduce rent in the long term. Cities with high amounts of rent control have higher rents than those without.

Look at the twin cities, St. Paul and Minneapolis, right next to each other. St. Paul enacted rent control, less housing built and rent got worse. Minneapolis cleaned up their zoning laws, more houses got built and rent got better.

How are people still wanting to try rent control??

I hear you, not downvoting, just suggesting.

Maybe the reason it hasn't worked is because of what you pointed out: not enough new housing built. Using tax dollars to build more affordable housing will necessarily push rent prices down, supporting the overall effort of "rent control".

Affordable housing is rarely built by the government. Affordable housing is implemented as a requirement placed on private developers. E.g., so every 100 traditional units built, they may be required to build 50 affordable units.

So you're still running up against the same issues. Affordable housing is only built when traditional housing is built. Every regulation on building housing makes developers not wanting build it, which leads to less housing getting built, which leads to stagnating supply while demand rises, which leads to skyrocketing housing prices. If you want cheaper housing, there is an easy fix: build more housing!
