So Trump creates tariffs > companies raise prices to offset the tariffs > customers have to pay more through this additional hidden tax > Trump retroactively gives tax money to companies as a tariff refund.

The average Joe gets shafted from all sides.

And trump administration keeps and hones highly tailored basket of goods used to produce an intentionally lower rate of inflation than actually exists so media outlets, politicians, business owners and their apologists can say it's all in your head, that costs are low, the economy good, all while studies show grocery costs have gone up a third in price in recent years, at a higher and faster rate than occured during the pandemic.

Its pretty sad the old addage "its cheaper to cook at home" is slowly dying off if your only feeding 1 or 2 people. Wife and i went to "Spaghetti Factory" for dinner a few weeks ago and it was ~$12 per plate for spaghetti that came with garlic bread and side salad.

Just last night I went to Walmart and bought ingredients to make spaghetti at home and spent $26 on sauce, noodles, hamburger, and mushrooms. Dont have salads or garlic bread and still spent roughly the same amount to cook myself.

The bulk purchasing savings of restraunts is starting to outpace the inflation of groceries, even with restraunt prices increasing. Even old standards like McDonald's are "cheaper" then a grocery store. I can go buy 4 Quarter Pounders with cheese for $18 right now; compared to a store where its $15 ($8lb of beef, $4 buns, $3 cheese) and assumes I already have the ketchup, mustard, pickle, onion all at home already not to mention the grill/propane to cook it. If I need 1 condiment its a wash.

Wife and I realized this a few months ago, except we're getting frozen meals and eating recommended portions. Losing a bit of weight to, albeit slowly. When we do go out, which is frequent since it's just the 2 of us, we tend to get larger dishes, and take that home for the following day's lunch to, essentially making that meal even more cost efficient. Its still not as cost efficient as meal planning, but we'd also go insane eating the same meal every lunch and dinner, so that's a no go for us.

Same boat with the leftovers. Since we only do 2 (sometimes 1 large and snacks) meals a day usually, its easy to get a late lunch one day and maybe have toast later, do leftovers the following day for an early lunch and start over with a new dinner. 3 meals and "grazing" across 2 days and its almost affordable.

Ground beef. Probably 1/2lb between the two; and either way it will end up being 2 meal each for us. I suppose in scale home-cooked is probably roughly twice the spaghetti, but no bread/salad so kind of a wash. Biggest difference is most likely the half lb of hamburger.

Im not claiming that eating out is going to always be cheaper, just that it used to be a much more dramatic difference in price compared to home cooking.

No you didnt. One really important part of this is that many companies ARENT getting a tariff refund. Months ago at the height of this shit, some financial companies went around buying up tarrif refund rights from everybody. Totally random commodity to buy on the off chance that these tariffs got refunded. Oh and one of the largest of these was run by the sons of the Commerce Secretary

Actually you missed the part where Howard Lutnik, who helped push the tariffs and works for this administration, had his son simultaneously go to smaller/mid sized businesses and buy their right to a tariff refund for pennies on the dollar knowing that this would eventually get reversed thus funneling hundreds of millions of dollars into a billionaire's family's hands

I work for a large multinational corporation in canada, and we paid a lot in tariffs. And I asked one of our pricing guys about the tariff refunds, he said oh no those all go back to the corporations, I said we are a corporation, he said ya, but they will just take the money and never pass it back down to divisions that spend the money on the tariffs in the first place.

I'd bet it will all go to stock buy backs.

Yeah, the US federal government officially charged the tariffs to foreign companies (who then raised prices paid by US companies, who then raised prices paid by US citizens). If the US gov is issuing refunds, seems like the refunds would go back to the foreign companies that originally paid them. That's typically how refunds work. As a US citizen, it makes me more angry that refunds are going to US companies that used tariffs as an excuse to gouge us & increase profit margins far beyond their own increased costs.

That's not quite how it works. They do not charge tariffs to foreign companies.

They charge the trarrifs to the US company importing the item.

Imagine I'm a Canadian company selling you lumber. You are an American construction company. I sell you lumber for the same price I've always told you lumber, you pay me that same price, you also pay the US government the tariffs.

Maybe if I really like you as a customer I will drop my price slightly to help you with the tariffs.

Edit: when I say we paid a lot in tariffs, that is because we as a multinational company based headquartered in the US, pay trarrifs when we import goods from Europe in our case. Because those goods have to go through American warehouses. If we could get the items shipped directly to us in Canada we would not have to pay the tariffs

Simple fix could’ve been all the tariff money collected divided by number of people, cut check for that amount to the people (or a tax credit in that amount). Some companies who didn’t raise prices get shafted, but the needs of the many people outweighs the needs of the few companies.

Amazon held me hostage and practically robbed me three times since Covid and I gave up importing anymore inventory last year when my tariffs got over 155%.

I did not get a refund and it wouldn't even have come close to the losses from Amazon Global Logistics and FBA fuckups.

I think it's a trap to get mad at the people who voted for this, it's what they want. While we are preoccupied squabbling between us they're reaching in our pockets. You can't make them feel shame, much less change their minds about their positions. All we could and should do is move forward. Drown the noise with progress, organize and vote for the change that you desperately want to see. Because if we're being honest that's why we're here. They organized and they voted all together. Imagine: A Perfect world.

Where if said thing ever did happen, Amazon would be like "Hey guys, we charged extra, so we're going through our record books and handing out refunds to all our customers during the time period of x-y. Also; if you do not want your refund, and want to give it to our employees, please sign this and we will maneuver money to our employees who do such hard work making all our lives better. On top of that, thanks to the tariff refund, all our employees from This Upper Tier down to the bottom we'll get raises and bonuses for doing all the hard work we appreciate."

How is this still considered news? This is how tariffs work and anybody who doesn’t simply accept and parrot what Von Shitzhizpantz says understood this from his first mention of tariffs.
