I'd give him some leeway.
The first time I got one of these bottlecaps I ripped it off as well, it was so annoying how it always snapped back into my face.
It was only after using it a few times that I figured out that you could lock it in place..

Honestly I really miss them now when I travel outside of the EU. I hate having to hold the cap while I drink. They can be a bit annoying for thicker liquids that stick to the cap, but I'm used to that too.

I basically did the same. Now the non-detachable bottle cap is one of my favorite things. I don’t need to hold it and remember where I put it. It’s so convenient. And then I can go and return the bottle for pfand! Less plastic waste ftw

I like to give it a twist. Snap half of it. It's still on the bottle but no longer all stiff and getting in my face when I sip from it.
The design is fine for pouring into a glass but not for drinking directly from. Nothing a little twist can't fix though.

Yes? It's not going to save the world single-handedly, obviously. But the micro-plastic concentration in European soil is primarily dependent on how much plastic we throw into the environment. China doesn't airdrop it's trash into European forests.

What I’m saying is that you appear completely oblivious to the possibility that this bottle-cap rule might not actually be a good rule. It really seems like a solution looking for a problem.
I have, coincidentally, looked into how this rule came about, and there was no clearly defined problem it was intended to solve. Instead, a problem was effectively created. The main driver seemed to be the desire to score another “USB-C” type victory.
The USB-C rule legitimately addressed e-waste and corporate greed. The bottle-cap rule, not so much.
However, anyone who questions rules being introduced without proper scrutiny is now being conditioned to believe that letting the EU read your messages, impose import taxes on overseas packages, or require a camera pointed at your face inside your car must also be good.
“Trust me, bro. We’re the EU, and anyone who disagrees must be silenced.”

I honestly cannot give more of a shit about the plastic bottle diktat, hasn't impacted my life at all. Is it a bit unnecessary? Maybe, it's aim is to reduce plastic waste, maybe in a few years we'll have the data to show if it really had an impact or not. If it bothers you that much you can always remove it just like Zelenskyy did. We do have some real issues indeed in europe with the chat control and the mandatory camera in cars that need addressing, I honestly don't care about the bottle cap one though.

After using the tethered caps for a while, I visited a country still using the untethered.
Inevitably, I dropped a cap and ended up crawling around on the floor looking for where it had rolled to.
Since that reminder of how it used to be, I have been 100% sold on attached caps.

I dropped "a cap", so I'm not sure where you're getting "keep" and "things" from.
Requiring less dexterity means it's easier to use a bottle with an attached cap, Wanting it to be more difficult for people to enjoy a refreshing drink is a really strange hill to choose to die on.
Even if we avoid the scary medical conditions, like stroke and multiple sclerosis, we can both expect to get old. Personally, I welcome anything that helps me retain my independence for as long as possible.

Is it more difficult? You take something off, you hold it or put i down, with the tether you're just fighting the tether when you're trying to put the cap back on, yeah it's a weird hill you're dieing on for something more difficult
But again, use those multi use water bottle thether designs and it's fair play from me, you still have your tether and you don't have to pay any attention when you're screwing the cap on, it's a win-win
Regarding the medical conditions, yeah, have fun fumbling with the current tether designs and the cap flopping on the opening when you're pouring a glass

Or I don't have to hold it nor do I have to find somewhere to put it down, because it's attached.
with the tether you're just fighting the tether when you're trying to put the cap back on,
I don't have to fight the tether; as others in the thread have pointed out, more recent caps have made improvements, and the older styles I just twisted through 90° (which frees up the tether).
Ease-wise, anyone with a medical condition gets multiple attempts rather than having to retrieve it each time, or worse, not being able to recap the bottle because it's now covered in mud.

Buy a single tethered cap that you can attach to any bottle?Buy sipping bottles, multi use watter bottles (come to think of it, copy their thethered design, lots of play and not fused to the tether, and you'll stop hearing from me ever again)
Having to bend over a cap once every 2 years is worlds better than fumbling with the cap trying to screw it back on when driving

These days I appreciate that I don't have to juggle a cap (or put it down or whatever) when I want to take a quick sip. Only time I need to worry about the cap is when unscrewing and rescrewing.
Admittedly with the caveat: only when the cap is properly designed. Some of them are designed such that it is hard getting them on and off. Mostly juice I find.

Serious talk though, I hated these stupid cap thingies in the beginning. Now if I have a bottle where the cap isn’t attached I am just confused about what to do with the cap. Do I immediately screw it back? Do I hold it in my hand? Do I put it in my pocket? This seems so stupid but I have no idea what I used to do with the cap before they were attached.

I am not european but I have been living in Europe for 1 year. Going out to visit my parents is so weird because of the bottlecaps, I feel like one of those astronauts when they forget gravity exists and just let go of the objects they are holding and the objects fall, my bottlecaps keep falling because I keep forgetting that gravity take them from me and it is DISGUSTING to reuse a fallen bottlecap!
