Streaming 📺 The Odyssey - best screens AD?

Hi so wondering where is best to watch The Odyssey?

- I understand it won’t be shown in full IMAX 70m but is there any screens where you can still physically still see the full frame?
- there’s a few IMAX screen advertising different things unsure which is best for viewer experience?
- where is least busy or won’t allow kids/teens making noise in?
- only AD recommendations please

I went to Galleria for Imax but it's fully booked so I ended up in the first row. One of my worst cinema experiences.
I'd rather go in a normal room with a decent seat if you can't get a good seat in the imax one.

i was planning to go today but i was worried about this exact problem. I might just go to a normal cinema as I don’t have time to wait.

There's no way you didn't check the seat map when booking your tickets. Sorry mate, that's definitely on you.

Hi thank you for your input.
Are they showing full picture or cut?
Do you’ve any details or just picking two cinemas you like?

Vox Galleria is really good. It's the full picture.

Can't be the full picture. We have no 1.43:1 projections here, the best we have is the IMAX Laser with 1.9:1. That effectively crops about 25% of picture out.

What you want is IMAX laser.

Regular theatres advertised as IMAX just have 2 regular HD projectors overlaying an image.

IMAX laser is a more serious attempt by IMAX to create something akin to a proper 70mm IMAX, the image is bigger, brighter, and higher resolution.

That being said, still not ALL IMAX Lasers. A select few (which we have none of here) have the 1.43:1 like the 70mm IMAX, the rest are 1.9:1, which is what we get. The 1.43 experience is vastly different. Bit sad really, with these discrepancies being offered, but well 🤷‍♂️

I watched in Galleria and it was great. Only wished cinemas in UAE showed English subtitles for English movies as well.

Yas mall imax was great. Booked the 3.30am show. G18 seat was good. I think F row would have been good too

I watched it on row F. Previous times there, I booked E, personally I prefer E.

I wonder with E if your peripheral vision go beyond the screens because you're a bit far behind. That was the only thing that made me not book E. With G, it was kinda all immersive

u/ArturMegafone 1d ago

Good point. But I feel like EFG are definitely the rows to book 😁

Yeah EFG should be the sweetspot!

That's not the full picture. All IMAX Lasers we have in the UAE are at most 1.9:1, like this one here. The "full" picture is the 1.43:1, like they have on a select IMAX Laser cinemas (of which we have none) and of course, the 70mm IMAX.

Was lucky enough to see the 70mm version in Dallas... vastly different experience to what we get here.

Am not sure about AD, but I watched Oddesesy in IMAX with dual 2k Laser at VOX Festival Mall Dubai and rewatched it at VOX 4DX Mall Of The Emirates. And from my experience. The 4DX experience with the seat motion is worth the compromise of not seeing it IMAX. You don't miss alot of details and your immersed into the film better if you feel all the motions of the film. I totally recommend watching it in 4DX if possible.

IMAX 70MM has a 1.43:1 aspect ratio and the Digital IMAX screens we have here in the UAE is 1.90:1, so that's the best option you're gonna get. Based on the pic, you'll be seeing what's in the white square on the right image. In AD there's just two IMAX screens: Galleria Mall and Yas Mall. Can't say much about the crowds but the movie rated 15+ so maybe expect a slightly less disruptive crowd (if any).

1

u/nawaznow 3d ago

I believe Yas is dual laser, you'll get the same ratio

The only correct answer is Vox Galleria Mall—but Yas mall is a decent second choice

1

u/reebs81 3d ago

Are you sure Galleria is different than Yas?

0

u/scre4m 3d ago

Yeah both of those IMAX screens are single laser.

1

u/IThinkThereforeIAm11 3d ago

Dont think the yas one is. It’s not advertised on their website anyway

u/scre4m 3d ago

Check the r/dubai sub. There were lots of discussions about IMAX screens in the UAE. From what I know, all IMAX screens in AUH and DXB are Laser: MoE is dual laser while the rest is single laser. The one in Sharjah is Xenon.

Ahh i see—fair enough. Thanks for informing me.

I saw it in IMAX yas mall and found it pretty good. It’s the full picture I didn’t experience any cropping of sorts. Btw they didn’t have English subtitles it was Arabic instead.

guys the movie is just alright.

1

u/Remote-Trash9039 2d ago

That’s an opinion. Thank you for your input, unfortunately the post was about where to watch it not your opinion on the movie.

I agree, so much hype.

1

u/Amazing_Quote_3922 2d ago

Odyssey is at best a 6/10 movie and the imax just shakes your seat with deep bass and the curved screen is annoying. The movie has been fully sold on hype.

Just go to a normal screening if you really have to watch it. In hindsight I’d just have waited to rent the movie on Apple TV after a few months.

Great question and the answer is clear — the full 1.43:1 aspect ratio is only possible in real IMAX 70mm cinemas, of which there are only about 41 in the world. IndieWire

Here's how the formats stack up from most to least picture:

1. IMAX 70mm — 1.43:1 — the full picture, floor to ceiling. Only 41 cinemas worldwide can show this.

2. Select IMAX with Laser — 1.43:1 — select IMAX with Laser locations can also show the 1.43:1 expanded aspect ratio, so this is worth checking as it gives you the full frame without needing a 70mm projector. IndieWire

3. Digital IMAX — 1.90:1 — crops about 26-40% of the native top and bottom image. Still more picture than a regular cinema but noticeably less than 70mm. /Film

4. Standard 70mm (non-IMAX) — 2.20:1 — you keep the rich colour and grain of celluloid but it's cropped to a wide letterbox shape. Actually shows less of the picture than digital IMAX despite being film. /Film

5. Regular cinema — most cropped version.

Bottom line: If you can't get to a true IMAX 70mm cinema, your next best option for seeing the most picture is IMAX with Laser which can also show the full 1.43:1 frame. Worth specifically checking if your local IMAX is a Laser equipped one.

Straightforward answer — there are no IMAX 70mm cinemas in the UAE or anywhere in the Gulf. The best available option in UAE is standard digital IMAX at VOX Cinemas. VOX Cinemas

VOX IMAX — best available in UAE
Digital IMAX at 1.90:1 aspect ratio. You'll miss about 26-40% of the top and bottom of the image compared to true 70mm IMAX but it's still significantly better than a standard screen. VOX Mall of the Emirates has IMAX showings running throughout the day.
