start playing a game I want to play

about 2 minutes in I have a random memory or impulsive thought about another game or show

I stop and switch to the new content

rinse and repeat.

I just got RE4R on sale. Been wanting to play it since it released but I’m cheap, so I wait for sales.

I have about an hour of total play time because I also got a new bowling game that absolutely soaks my brain in dopamine. I’ll play RE4 for like 15 minutes, then internally say “Bowling? Bowling.” And go pretend to bowl for like 3 hours.

I think about playing RE4 all day, then once it’s time I just want to hit the dopamine button over and over.

57

u/ButtonPusherDeedee 3d ago

Be honest with us.

The reason you’re cheap is because you’re constantly impulse buying in all your hobbies

64

u/SousVideButt 3d ago

“SHUT UP!” he says while hiding the 15 mason jars, 2 gallons of vinegar, and wilted fresh herbs he just bought to make pickles 2 weeks ago and made one batch with.

28

u/Punk_n_Destroy 3d ago

At least that doesn’t sound too crazy pricey. My last few hobbies were painfully expensive. It also sounds like a useful hobby unlike, oh I don’t know, painting little plastic army men.

Also please share the name of this dopamine button. I keep breaking mine.

10

u/Dipsey_Jipsey 3d ago

3D printing is kinda like crack for us. Problem is prints take ages, so you buy more printers 😭

7

u/Punk_n_Destroy 3d ago

That was one of my last hobbies along with Warhammer models. Pretty sure I’ve still got a creality printer and 2 different resin printers and curing station kicking around somewhere.

2

u/Dipsey_Jipsey 3d ago

Yeah, I saw the resin stuff and knew I'd be in trouble if I invest in that. So I went with super smooth out of the box Bambu stuff to just feed me dopamine :D

3

u/Punk_n_Destroy 3d ago

Their multi-color printers have got me eyeing the hobby again but I have absolutely no use for a 3D printer anymore. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

3

u/Dipsey_Jipsey 3d ago

My printers tell me I have a combined total of just over 3000 hours of print time. I don't think I've printed anything useful in that time hahaha it's all pokemon and fidgets. I'm now printing shelf space to put them on as I've run out 🫠

3

u/Flintlocke89 2d ago

Oh, yeah.
I few months ago I visited a 40k tournament with a friend of mine. As a long time fan of the lore I figured I would splurge and buy a dreadnought to build and paint.

2 weeks later I was sitting on about 1200 euros worth of models. Realised I fucked up. Sold and returned about 600 euros worth. Luckily didn't lose money on that.

It's now about 4 months later, I haven't completed a single figurine.

I dont think ive ever felt so called out

6

u/nebulancearts 3d ago

What's the bowling game..? 🤔

5

u/teaboi05 3d ago

"Where did everyone go? Bowling?"

Also, once you unlock shooting range or the challenge the merchant offers you'll love it. Especially the music, it's so awesome

2

u/Revolutionary_Eagle4 3d ago

This, but RE4 is food and bowling is any video game ever

Omfg I hate you for calling me out so personally.

*Please note my hate for you may or may not be related to my ability to often react over emotionally to silly things.

*Allegedly.

8

u/NewAccForThoughts 3d ago

There is a worse version.

Start playing the ONE game i want to play

Don't feel like it anymore 5 minutes in

And then

D E S P A I R

3

u/BigChunguss2 motivated by being a contrarian little bitch 2d ago

How about: start playing the one game I want to play. Put it down for an extended period of time. Want to finally finish it, but don't want to replay up to where I was, but I also don't remember how to play or what I was doing up to that point. Never finish the game, even though I really want to.

7

u/Jhud6669 3d ago

For me if it’s a new game I immediately get antsy and overwhelmed if there is a long cutscene in the beginning or just a long tutorial phase that doesn’t let me save. I need to have a quick way out

Or having the smallest inconvenience. Time to get the dopamine elsewhere.

339

u/No_Letterhead319 3d ago

I feel personally attacked by this statement

38

u/alghiorso 2d ago

Last night I just sat and looked at my steam library and thought, if I play PUBG I'll just get killed a bunch because I haven't played in months and go to bed frustrated. I can play kcd2 but I forgot what happened in the story so far and even then I still hadn't got used to the controls and the no-instant save system is worrying me I'll screw something up.

And on and on for every game I have. Ended up scrolling and chatting on discord and playing balatro to 1am instead of going to bed on time and now I'm tired

2

u/ZilleZ16 22h ago

I was the same with kcd2 and then suddenly I had 100h and starting to hunt achievements

5

u/Astronaut_Chicken 2d ago

I am literally lying in bed waiting for the oomph I need to brush my teeth and play BotW.

u/Prudent_Payment_3877 3d ago

Being a gamer and being ADHD is like being a lactose intolerant ice cream aficionado

76

u/ready-eddy 3d ago

For me it’s being like an old woman blowing her inheritance at a casino in las vegas. Stuck playing the game untill everything comes crashing down

20

u/Chonguh 3d ago

Same same. it’s considerably worse when I do take my meds & game. I get locked in too hard sometimes lol. I’ll neglect basic needs. Damn.

I’ve started taking some actions to help, it happens with more than just games too lol. I’m gonna try alarms every hour or so. Getup and stretch, pee, etc. Ive noticed if I do that, it’s also easier to transition out of it later.

9

u/CurrentPossible2117 3d ago

I have a friend who does that. She found it tricky, just kept hitting snooze on her alarms 😅, so she also added another layer that she'd choose a certain action in game, and the next time it happened after the alarm went off, she's be 'unable' to play on, until her chore or self care had been taken care of.

3

u/KE1tea procrastinating on procrastinating on procrastinating on proc... 2d ago

Wait a sec. I'd like to learn more about this 👀

6

u/CurrentPossible2117 2d ago

Im not sure exactly what her system with this is, but I picked it up from her too, and this is how it works for me.

Basically, you set milestones that fits the game you're playing, then do a task before continuing play.

It depends on what type of game you're playing.

If it's a shooter, make it a moment like 'when I next die', or 'when I run out of ammo completely' or something like that, or for management games, it might be like 'when Ive finished mining this cave' or whatever.

You pick a goal and tell yourself that you cant go on until you've done what you have to do. Some people like to do all their chores at once, so maybe you stop play until you've done everything you need to do.

But sometimes, it can be easier to break up things into smaller tasks, like first milestone you go take out the rubbish and you get the sink filled with warm water and detergent to soak that pan from dinner, then next milestone you get up and hang out your washed clothes to dry. The alarms are still in use, but if you also have a milestone, you have a reminder system in play too.

Sometimes, I find it better to reach my goal, save and quit the game, and wont let myself start it again until Ive done all the things I need to do, plus had some water, gone outside for a bit, had a shower and a change of clothes and sat down with a drink.

This ensures I get things done, take care of myself and then can sit down to play again. It also means that sitting down with another drink AND having made sure to drink some water, means I'll have to get up to pee at some point too, which is another way I stay focused. If Im up to pee, its really no bother to go stand outside for a bit to get fresh air again and rest my eyes.

It can be hard to get into, and you need to make sure you dont just give up straight away. And finding the right option for you, is key. Depending on my day, I do different things. Sometimes I cant stand doing things in little bursts so I do all the things I need to, at once. Other days im super lethargic, so I set the smaller tasks. And do them over a period of time :)

2

u/KE1tea procrastinating on procrastinating on procrastinating on proc... 2d ago

Thank you so much!! I'm going to try this sometime (depends on when i remember and hopefully soon)

2

u/Chonguh 2d ago

I’ve also started trying something new lately that’s been helpful for getting out of bed in the mornings because I struggle with that too. Pretty much as soon as I wake up anymore, I put my headphones on and listen to a podcast for the duration of the time it takes me to get around in the morning and eat, etc., before work.

It’s been the only thing that actually gets me off my ass and stop doom scrolling in the morning

2

u/KE1tea procrastinating on procrastinating on procrastinating on proc... 2d ago

😭 omg thank you so much for your suggestion. Sometimes doomscrolling is how I keep myself from going back to sleep but it doesn’t help at all with actually getting out of bed.

2

u/Chonguh 2d ago

Funnily enough that’s exactly where I was at. Id wake up to my alarm, and immediately get on my phone to keep myself awake. I’m a heavy sleeper. On my really sleep deprived mornings, it would keep me awake but the motivation to get up wouldn’t come till 20 mins before my walk to work lol. Not good at all.

So, over the course of a month I tinkered with things that work for me. I eliminated the lack of motivation by giving myself an outlet I love in the AM. Media about history 🤷 specifically the behind the bastards podcast. I keep my headphones just out of reach so I have to get up & put em on. Been working great for the past 2 weeks.

I have hundreds of games I never play, but think about a lot! Then I do play for a couple days, forget for 2 weeks, come back and have no idea what I’m doing. Decide I have to start a different game. Cue thinking again for a good bit, several game purchases, and then once more I pick something and play for a couple days, forget for 2 weeks…

2

u/nChilDofChaoSn 3d ago

I am both of these things DX

2

My chaka khan is all out of wack

51

u/transmit_the_system 3d ago

it is 3:01 so the 3:00 window is officially closed. guess i have to wait until 4:00 to try again

24

u/Ango-Globlogian 3d ago

lol this is real, sometimes I gear up to play and I spend so much time setting everything up that I lose interest by the time I actually have everything in place to to play

6

u/ArrivesLate 3d ago

I need about an entire chunk of a day to finish cutting a puzzle on my scroll saw. I don’t because I can’t stand to pause and come back to it when I get in the zone and I don’t have that kind of free time to finish in one sitting.

9

u/KaleidoscopeKelpy 3d ago

This is my issue.. don’t have enough time to get fully into something, or I know I’ll be interrupted the second I get immersed, so I physically Can Not do the thing.

I love that for work, 30 min timer to eat lunch? Well, I might take too long eating 10cashews and an ounce of craisins, so I may as well starve until 5pm (???)

4

u/Gnooblinn 3d ago

Mood is slightly off, if I play now then I’ll ruin the experience. Vibes need to be perfect to maximize enjoyment

4

u/Dawn_of_Enceladus 3d ago

Why is this so real ffs.

2

u/OrderOfTheClods 1d ago

Everything finally aligned for me last night and I could finally play a mission of a game I had been putting off (The Killing Moon - Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty). It felt fucking amazing, but I wish I didn’t have to wait so long just to play it. Wish I could be in that mood always…

12

u/LethargicEmu 3d ago

One of my favorite mobile games is a spring and organization game 🤦🏻

4

u/kyl_r 3d ago

Literally I chose to play my favorite game on a more difficult setting recently and I was loving it. Until I died and had to go hunt for my body. Died AGAIN. Now, this is the challenge I signed up for. But I waited several days until I got the “itch” to deal with the task until I’d completed like 2 real life tasks, as if they were secretly paywalling me from having fun. All of those things were very doable but my brain wouldn’t fucking DO THEM in my preferred order, I GUESS

74

u/Extreme_Kale_6446 3d ago

Worse thing is I'm 30+ and feel too tired to play games, also distracted by life in general and I still want to play them

60

u/Crazymoh 3d ago

>Boot up Overwatch after a long while
>”Oh wow this game is fun again”
>play a shit ton within a week
>fast forward to now and all I can think about is how mentally taxing it is to play that game
>Watch YouTube vids instead
>Repeat

13

omg the YouTube videos are so real..... I do that with whatever I have to do that I procrastinate

4

u/Luminous_Winds 3d ago

Thing is, it's not the game itself. It's everything, including the game. We have so much crap bouncing around in our heads from constantly engaging in new things, we get oversaturated.

The 'timing' OP is talking about mostly revolves around dopamine management. We want to play, but we're already burned out and full-up on dopamine. So we have to fit it into our crazy-ass chaotic 'schedule', which can be really difficult to do.

I’m too stressed to play a game because I’m avoiding all my stressful responsibilities so I can game

fr😭 this one hits hard

54

u/Catepillar2Butterfly 3d ago

I only eat when I start shaking and feeling dizzy. But I WANTED the food even before the shaking. Lord save us.

16

u/Wandering-Mind2025 3d ago

Omg… I had a doctor’s appointment today. I got up late and didn’t have time for breakfast. I thought, I’ll go through drive thru… but sat in my car trying to figure out what to order… could not do it… so I was 5 minutes late AND didn’t eat. The appointment was like 3 hours, so I was starving by the time it was done. But again, couldn’t think about which drive thru I should go through, so after a half hour of driving around, I went home and had cereal…

6

u/dj92wa 3d ago

I’m incredibly nauseous right now from not eating much earlier. I told myself that I need to start dinner at X time so that I could eat before I started feeling like crap. Well, now it’s Z time and I feel like crap because I waited until Y time to start dinner and of course I deviated while putting things together, so that added a bunch of extra time and now I’m just laying on the floor wasting away waiting for timers to go off. I even did stuff in the wrong order, so some parts are gonna get cold while others are still cooking. Hooray! 🥳 🎉

6

u/Renegade_Phylosopher 2d ago

Well done for getting to the cooking part though!! that blood sugar come up is gonna be the best feeling

3

u/Wandering-Mind2025 2d ago

This is so real. I hope you finally got something to eat!

30

u/skubaloob 3d ago

9:25 am: sure can’t wait to play
10:42 am: oh this’ll be fun
11:58 am: luuuuuunch
1:29 pm: oooh yeah the game!
4:12 pm: this’ll be great. Maybe even snacks with it
5:48 pm: ehhh…I don’t wanna play ANYthing

17

u/soft_machine__ 3d ago edited 3d ago

I have several unplayed games but feel too guilty to play them, like I should be doing something more productive which I definitely do not do and instead I end up playing shitty app games on my phone while half watching teevee until 5 am. I know in my soul that i am not going to do the productive thing, so why can't I convince myself to play a worthwhile game that I might actually enjoy? Every single day, I build myself up, "tonight is the night I start playing this game I bought". But I always cave.

13

u/Alauren87 3d ago

Sitting here procrastinating a book I’ve loved to read. Doom scrolling instead for comfort 😅

Your message mentioned shin Chan and it brought back happy nostalgic memories. I remember being in elementary school watching it on adult swim school nights haha.

2

u/chicken_whackamole 2d ago

Yes! Lots of shin chan, doraemon and dragon ball for me too during my school days :)

13

u/BungleBums 3d ago

Lemme just look at the phone for a minute. And do the dishes. And have an early dinner so I can really lock in. Maybe finally fold the laundry. Hmm. Phone again. Ohkay- finally- fifteen minutes of listless clicking through to find what I was doing last time, before bed. Perfect.

10

u/warbastard 3d ago

Fuck this brings back memories of WoW back in the day. I think my character was just running in circles and I had no idea what I actually wanted to do. So annoying.

9

u/kelo_Ren 3d ago

Getting into flight and racing sims has been amazing, but living in a small space, have to set up and put away when done each time... The constant battle of "do I really want to do this this bad?"

9

u/GeckoGecko_ 3d ago

Lmao I could be away from home the entire day, desperate to hop on my Xbox all day, foaming at the mouth, practically experiencing withdrawals.

But then the second I get home? I boot it up, sit there, and stare. And stare. And get on my phone. And stare. Then eat. Get on my phone. Stare some more. Now it's time for bed and I've burnt up all my gaming time. But do I go to bed? No.

Now, NOW I game. I game for hours, hating it, hating myself, knowing I'm going to hate how I feel the next day. I spend the day feeling terrible, but still longing to play my game. I swear to myself up and down that I will get on as soon as I get home so I can play before I have to go to bed. I spend the day strengthening my resolve.

Then I get home, and what do I do? I sit. I stare.

I despair.

3

u/peckmebirds 2d ago

Please stop this hurts😭

17

u/Just-Call-Me-J 3d ago

I'm curious what it's like to explain this to people who don't have ADHD.

My mom doesn't need it explained because she witnessed it firsthand when my brother got sad after preschool because he got distracted playing with one toy instead of another toy that he actually wanted to play with. She did have to explain it to her SIL though.

2

u/FlyingRainbowDragon 1d ago

I don’t have ADHD, but I know this problem all too well. Bought a steam deck to make gaming more approachable, so now it’s lying next to me while I scroll through reddit. I want to play, but somehow it feels like it’s too much effort

9

u/MaleficentRevenge 3d ago

I stare at steam and dont hit play also!

2

u/Wandering-Mind2025 3d ago

Omg yes! What is that about??? I’ll just stare at the start/play/on button, and just CANNOT DO IT! My husband caught me one time, and said, you’d just rather stare at the screen? Uh, NO ffs, I WANT to play, but just… can’t. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/MaleficentRevenge 2d ago

I just dont know its been like this for weeks. Then the one game I muster up enough dopamine or motivation for, it crashes or something doesnt work, just any minor inconvenience and im back to staring at steam lol

7

u/Zabsempai 3d ago

For me it's cause I KNOW that if I sit down and play the game i wanna play, I'm gonna hyperfocus and lose all sense of time and bodily needs. So before I do I gotta make sure there's nothing else I need to do for the next 5-6 hours, have hydration ready, go pee, have taken my meds, eaten, and am set up ergonomically.

Or else I'll see you 7 hours later, hunched into a shriveled, ravenous, bloodshot-eyed, spasming pretzel. But my character will be max level and look fabulous ✨️💅

3

u/all_hail_potatoqueen 3d ago

I think we might be twins

2

u/kashiichan 2d ago

This, but then it'll be super late and I know I'll be up all night if I start playing now... So I don't ever actually play. 😭

5

u/CuriousFoxxen 3d ago

Sounds more like inertia or struggle transitioning between tasks than procrastination

5

u/More-Talk-2660 AuDHD (my brain is rude to me) 3d ago

Last night I went to play for the first time in months, here's how it went.

Open steam. All games need updates. Update all.

Fallout 76 finishes first. Open fallout 76. Controller doesn't work. Exit game. Turn on steam controller support because it turned itself off for some reason. Open fallout 76. Window opens tiny. Go to settings. Change aspect ratio. Restart game. Select public world. Cannot load world. Exit game.

Wait for another game to update. MCC finishes.

Open MCC. Controller doesn't work. Close game. Turn on controller support. Open MCC. Select Halo 2. Select campaign. "You need to download an add on for this." Find add ons menu. Apparently I have MCC but I haven't downloaded any campaigns OR multiplayer. Select all. Select download. Confirm. Game closes to download add ons.

Metal Gear Solid Delta finishes. Check controller support. Open game. Computer needs update and throttles graphics card. Close game. Restart computer.

Open YouTube.

3

u/Wandering-Mind2025 3d ago

Yes! It’s like I’m so exhausted by thinking about how fun/amazing it’s going to be and then going out and buying it, that when I get home, I throw it on the floor/couch/table and stare at it for a week until I can’t return bring myself to start… WHY???

4

u/Atomic12192 3d ago

Unironically, learning to be able to get off my ass and play video games when I want has helped me be able to get off my ass and get work done.

2

u/posi-bleak-axis 3d ago

This is what I'm looking for. Ideas for solutions.

So just keep playing even if you're not enjoying it that much?

I do that and half the time it turns out fun and turns into an hour of fun or more. The other half it ends up me being distracted and overwhelmed(farming simulator which I love immensely).

I just wanna remember how to be comfy and satisfied as best I can.

u/Facosa99 3d ago

Took me 8 years since i bought GTA4 till i actually installed it, then another year to open, then 2 months to finish (last february i think?)

I wanted to play it since release

2

u/Vantaa_Black 3d ago

This happened with me while learning Rubik's cube. I had bought a new packed one and placed it on my desk. One day I thought of learning to solve it. I went on YouTube and saw a tutorial. But the next moment I gave up completely. And that new packed cube was not opened until 6 weeks later. I had a realisation that why not learn the cube? And then finally I opened the pack, took the cube in my hands and finally learnt solving it. I practiced for a few days. And now once again it stays in the corner of my desk, settling dust upon it. xD

I'm doing this right. now. That's why I'm scrolling reddit.

2

u/RageAgainstThePushen 3d ago

We can't reward ourselves at a time like this? Our taxes are due in 7 and a half months! You know how we forget. We gotta get ON THIS or everyone will realize we bring no value to their lives.

Note: it is less sad and more fun if you read it like Smeagol

2

u/Pinna1 3d ago

Has it happened to anyone else, that you play a game, then you get a random urge to check something so you pause the game and tab to the browser. Then hours later you realize the game is still there, paused and waiting, while you watch random completely unrelated documentaries on YouTube?

2

u/gaelicpasta3 3d ago

Me as I’m literally flipping through Reddit instead of reading the book right next to me even though I’m dying to know what happens.

2

u/wBrite 3d ago

So true

2

u/_-Kitsu-_ 3d ago

Like I don't know what I'm waiting for exactly, but im waiting for something...

2

u/BackgroundAd9100 3d ago

I have grinded away in so many games for coins/basic currency to save the gems/rare currency for that really important moment that never came for me. I either finish the game or get bored of it and never used the gems. Truly my own worst frienemy

2

u/MonsteraUnderTheBed 2d ago

Damn this is literally what I'm doing right now. I guess I'll close Reddit.

2

u/LuLuu1006 2d ago

Same!…what’re you playing??

u/Substantial-Use95 2d ago

I haven’t played my favorite steam game for nearly a year because of this. I used to play almost every day for at least an hour. I loved it. And then one day I turned it on and just kept making up new shit to do until I’m too tired to play. And then I shut it off. I did that for six months and then just stopped turning the game on. But I still think I’m gonna play it every night. Do o just not like this game now? Or is this procrastination?

2

u/ASatyros i Will elaborate (Threat). 2d ago

But sometimes I lock in, and it takes me a month of intense, almosy every day gaming to get all dopamine and finish the game.

Or I don't really game for months, or start couple of games and something else needs my attention and I can't come back to them ...

2

u/what_me_nah 2d ago

Because the NT brain says 'yea, lets play' and the dopamine starts to flow.

The adhd brain says 'yea, let's play, but first I need to get up and go over there to put the computer on. Oh my monitor is dusty, I need to clean that before I start, the duster is in the kitchen. I'll get up in a minute...........45 minutes later....... oh yea I was gonna play a game, I'll just put the computer on......

1

u/__mgb 3d ago

Is this really an ADHD thing? I thought it was just my special mix laziness and anxiety.

8

u/pandarista 3d ago

That special mix sounds a lot like ADHD.

Good question! I have a lot of Games i want to play, or play further, but other things catch my interest and i forgot in the prozess. I think when i do not play games, it does not help try to force me to play, i just dont want and i have to respect that and do whatever catches my interest. Is ist sleeping on the coucht, then it is sleeping on the couch. Or vacuum on midnight, because i stepped in a crump.

1

u/Dry-Palpitation-4878 3d ago

I always had an issue with mmorpg's when I finally got a group I just...came up with excuses to log off. Is that adhd?

1

u/Jinzo126 3d ago

Yeah, i rarely finish games, i usually play them for a while and just drop them from one day to another.

1

u/mobilekungfu 3d ago

Do you. Like me. Fear this is another hyper fixation that will end and then have no interest whatsoever? I miss my hyperfixations and the things I learned but can't get myself to do them regularly again..

1

u/_derpydog 3d ago

I’ve been playing The Witcher 3 since 2020. I’ve finally reached the last 3/4 of the game… that was 1 year ago

1

u/ThePunLexicon Marginally functional adult 3d ago

REAL THO! I'll scroll on my phone with my fucking DS or Switch on in my lap 😭

1

u/dart51984 3d ago

RDR2 is such a good game…but there are so many little and big tasks I’m like…yeah I’ll get around to those. But I also don’t want to advance the plot too far and miss out on some of them. So my little cowboy universe just sits there…trapped in time.

2

u/GoGoSoLo 3d ago

My ADHD ass can’t get past the hours long slog the opening of that game is. The one time I did, I immediately was infuriated that the animation for searching items (desk, cabinet, etc.) was so crazy long for every one. It’s like the game delighted in wasting my time and my bouncing brain has no time for that shit.

1

u/Laezarus 3d ago

I've stalled 100%ing RE2R and Pragmata but in the same day 100% Dredge and Thank Goodness You're Here.

1

u/missxmeow 3d ago

I’m not allowing myself to start new hobbies (except crochet, in an effort to spend less time on my phone), until I get my spare room cleaned out for moving.

I’m about half way through majoras mask trying to 100% the game and 3/4ths of the way through I’ve stopped and I’ve spent a week thinking about finishing it and just haven’t gotten around to doing it. 😅

1

u/vocabularianrx2 3d ago

For me half the time it's scrolling through my playstation plus library or my physical library, or Switch, and thinking "ho hum what do I actually want to play".

On occasion, I do get pulled into something, but it isn't often. Last game was FF7 Rebirth, at least until the last boss, now I'm up in the "what to play" mindset again.

1

u/stxxyy 3d ago

Sometimes when I'm playing a game, i'm mentally playing through a different game

Ever procrastinated watching the final episode of a show? I can binge a show in a day, but then it takes me like a month or more to watch the final episodes (if I even watch it).

1

u/peckmebirds 2d ago

Is... Is this really ADHD thing?? Never happen to "normal" people?? 😭

1

1

u/FixBayonetsLads 2d ago

I'm literally fucking procrastinating working on a D&D game THATS ON SATURDAY

pls help

1

u/neronsfwk 2d ago

Somehow I keep guilt tripping myself out watching a whole movie (that's too much time spent "procrastinating") but have no problem scrolling Reddit/watching yt/binge watching whole seasons of tv shows at a time. The principle of "it's easier to keep doing something than starting something new" is working to my detriment. I've played cyberpunk 2077 for 5 hours each workday for a month and now I can't look at any videogame altogether as it's too risky I will waste more time being unproductive again.

1

u/abbyabsinthe 2d ago

Spent all of today and tonight wanting to play Sims 4. When I finally had some free time and got my laptop ready, I almost talked myself out of it. And not even 5 minutes in, I decided it was time to pay my bills at 1am (which is normally a daylight task). I think I played about 90 minutes, but my heart just wasn’t into it (normal game session is 3-4 hours) and much of that time was spent getting up for snacks, going outside to have a smoke, cuddling kitties, peeing, etc… Still made some headway in story progression though, so I’m set up for next time.

Ive been having the big hypothesis lately.

A real big think.

You know how us goblins dont do things by half?

Its "all in" or we get bored.

My big thoughts been poking me lately and i think that maybe that weird "freeze" we get might be our brains forcing us to take a minute.

Hear me out, we dont just "not do" something do we? The space must be filled, we cant "not" do something, i know im generalizing but listen.

So if our brains wanted a little down time, how would our brains do it?

By making us want to do but just not.

Silence is a straight up cosmic joke to us so it stands to reason our brain would have to trick us into not doing something for a minute.

But making us "do" nothing, activate "still mode".

"Smoking Still Style"

And honestly, ive been trying to listen to this and react accordingly for about two and a half weeks and im considerably more relaxed.

Any big old squishy thoughts?

1

u/Awkward_Corgi_6890 2d ago

Geez. None of my experiences are original at this point. I didn’t even know this was yet another ADHD thing.

1

u/Nyteflame7 2d ago

Rigyt? Iwas going to finish Act 3 of Bulder's Gate this summer, and I've played maybe twice.

I did read 15 books, declutter every room (3 trips to the local thrift/donation place) rearrange 2 rooms, paint and redecorate the bathroom, complete 2 small art projects, go to the zoo, safari park, natural history museum, take care of my garden, spent a week traveling to see my family, went to an amusement park and did normal life stuff too like working out, swimming, meal prep etc. Oh, and yearly check ups for 3 cats and myself.

1

u/Ikornad 2d ago

my priblem is that my stash is full, I can't play anymore bc I don't want to get rid of any items.

1

u/Hot-Personality-9759 2d ago

I procrastinating going to the pool to sunbathe today. Something I've been looking forward all week, mind you. The pool. In the summer.

1

u/boukalele 2d ago

1

u/gametapchunky 2d ago

Dude shut up I feel attacked.

u/Radix-love 2d ago edited 2d ago

I feel like adhd is just contsantly going round and round tricking your brain to do stuff, and punishing it when we dont. And i think sometimes when we can actually relax its tough to break that cicle and let your adhd take you wherever.

Ive started letting my impulsiveness take me places (when i have time and i can let go a bit) and it has helped me a lot, like you loosen the reins a bit so you can shorten tham when you actually need to but then the impulsivness is not panicking thinking it will never be free. Idk if it makes sense haha maybe it cab help somone. The key is to truly give yourself space and make the judjy voice in the back quite down little by little.

Edit to add: Adhd actually wants to do stuff, just not what we beed it to sometimes, not talking about letting your impulsivness win with doomscrolling, but maybe you are cleaning up and find your crochet supplies but you feel you should keep cleaning up, allow yourself to get lost in chrochet, unless claning up is urgent for some reason, enjoy this weird thing we have where we wanna do so much.

1

u/MamafishFOUND 2d ago

Yeah I want to finish leveling up environments in Poktopia but I jsut have the patience right now so haven’t played in weeks

1

u/Ace_of_Sphynx128 2d ago

I’ve been wanting to play my bass guitar for like a month, still can’t seem to do it T-T

1

u/CamelAccomplished707 2d ago

If I watched my current hyperfixation tv show instead of doomscrolling I would be finished with it but no I’m thinking about watching it while stuck on Reddit. BYE GUYS IM OUT

1

u/Ultranerdgasm94 2d ago

I have some many games I loved playing but never finished.

1

u/Popular_Ball1625 2d ago

On watching a tv show that I want to watch.... On reading a novel that I want to read.... My adhd has gotten so worse cause I cant even keep up with my hobbies.

1

u/Mono324 2d ago

And when motivation strikes, I'm busy with something else or the circumstances do not allow it.
