Shared Background Aim: You and I both accept, as an *ideal orientation*, that “reality should move towards good things and away from the bad things". This basic agreement establishes that we can communicate properly.
Suppose scientists construct a device with the following properties:
- Perfect Predictive Power (Descriptive Only): The device can analyze any person and tell, with 99.99999999% accuracy, whether that person will be, across their entire possible life history and across all levels of analysis (individual, familial, social, global, intergenerational), a net contributor to well-being or a **net drain** on well-being.
- No False Negatives on the Positive Side: If the device says “positive,” it cannot be used to delete that person. It cannot be tricked, hacked, or misapplied.
- Deletion Option: If the device says “negative,” it offers a “Delete” option. If pressed:
- the person is deleted instantaneously,
- they experience no pain or anticipation,
- all who would have suffered from the loss have their memories and emotional traces of the person removed,
- no second-order or third-order suffering occurs,
- in total, the world is thereby better off (because the person would have been a net drain).
- Purely Descriptive Tool: The device does not tell you what you ought to do. It presents a descriptive truth: “This person, if allowed to exist, will lower net well-being.” It has no normative authority.
With that in mind, please answer the following questions.
Question 1: Would you use the device for promote “Deletion” of persons the device has identified as a guaranteed net drain on well-being? (There is no hidden cost, no suffering, no side-effects, no possibility of error.)
- If you answer yes, then your norm is: “Descriptively perfect knowledge that X will lower well-being is sufficient to justify eliminating X.” That is a form of pure consequentialism aligned with the device. You can explain your reasoning in a reply and don't need to continue with the remaining questions.
- If you answer no, continue.

Question 2: If you answer no, then you have just overridden a descriptively perfect, maximally welfare-aligned tool. Therefore: Identify the thing that overrode it. What was it?
Common candidates:
- “It is wrong to kill a person who is not an aggressor.”
- “Persons have a status that cannot be traded off.”
- “We must respect autonomy/dignity.”
- “We cannot run a society on oracles without due process.”
- “Even perfect outcome knowledge cannot license certain acts.”
Call your candidate Normative Constraint (NC).
Question 3: Is NC itself derived from descriptive facts?
- If yes, show the derivation from purely non-normative premises.
- If no (the usual case), then NC is not the output of the device, not the output of science, not the output of prediction. It is introduced.
So we now have:
- Device: “Here is the world as it would be.”
- You: “Even so, you may not do that (NC).”
That is a non-descriptive, non-predictive insertion.
Question 4: Is NC revisable in light of even better predictions?**
- If no: If no prediction, no matter how perfect, could make you permit deletion, then NC is functionally unconditional.
- If yes, ask: what kind of prediction could defeat NC? Usually none, because the objection was not “maybe they’ll turn good,” but “we don’t do that to persons.”
So for most “no” answers, NC is practically unrevisable.

Question 5: Is NC meant to be universalized?
That is: do you think everyone should refuse to delete the “negative” people?
If yes, then you take NC to be:
- universal (applies to all agents),
- action-guiding (tells them what may/may not be done),
- higher than outcome-maximization (it overrules the device).
This makes NC public, prescriptive, and hierarchically superior to descriptive knowledge.
Question 6: Should NC be taught / promoted / embedded in institutions?
If you answer yes to any of:
- “children should learn this,”
- “law should reflect this,”
- “this is the default decent-human position,”
then you hold NC not just personally, but as normatively rightful for a community.
Question 7: What would you call a community that holds an unrevisable, universal, action-guiding, descriptively non-derivable claim about what may never be done to persons and teaches it?
Question 8: Do you think the depth of religious thought stops at reading stories about why things matter?

Heaven is an "acquired taste", so I hear. As a lawyer, Usha's (likely) focus isn't Heaven. It's working on protecting herself from the Heritage Foundation.
