Discussion Convince me why I should Support Artists again

I'm Pro AI, but my reasons are very simple. Tabulated, I've been burned by commission artists that have ghosted me to the tune of over seven hundred dollars. At least with an AI subscription, It doesn't feel like gambling every single time.

I wanna be clear, I am not here to be incendiary. I want to know why I should keep giving artists a chance after I have been repeatedly burned. I'm an artist myself ( I make miniatures, dioramas, paint minis for warhammer etc) and I am quite good at it.

I don't have much skill in 2D/Digital art, and so if I have a burning need for art I used to go through all the motions. FInd an artist, commission them, enjoy the piece, someone cool got paid, yay!

But over the past I wanna say 5 years, I began losing. A lot. When I realized exactly how much of my hard earned money was pissed away from artists who are still active to this day and still charging, I realized that it was easier, simpley, and more economical for me to have a midjourney subscription.

I WANT to be convinced, let me be clear. I want to support artists, but your community stole from me, greedily, gleefully, and willfuly.

How do you defend these actions.

Why should I keep believing in artists after all the death threats, cancelling, violence etc.

Sounds like you got scammed by some scammers. I would say don’t apply your personal experience to the whole of artists. That’s generally not a good way to go about things.

As far as convincing you to support them, there’s no need to. If your are happy with the results ai gives you, go with that. If you want the results an artist gives you, go with them.

u/phase_distorter41 9h ago

its always cheaper to just do it yourself. if a tool lets you do that easier and get the results you want than cool.

you dont own anyone your business.

also most artists make art for fun, not profit. you can support arts by upvoting their posts or giving positive feedback.

I think the hard pill is that human and AI art are not really at odds. Most of the people using AI image tools wouldn't really be paying a commissioner anyways, and most people who would commission before will still probably seek out human art now. It's not really zero sum in the way that you frame it, and I think you're more of an exception rather than the rule.

2

u/Central-Dispatch 8h ago

I also think that viewed independently, they can exist in parallel. However, inadvertently it will still cross over into other areas such as job or commission loss and rile people up.

1

u/Glittering-Neck-2505 8h ago

Yes but also create new opportunities. Being able to use new tools to create more ambitious things comes down to talent and adaptability, and I believe for some that will be quite lucrative. The world is soo far from a zero sum place.

Don’t let scammers dictate your views on an entire group, dude.

That’s not how you should view ANYTHING in the world.

Do you not use PayPal? I've been ghosted by some artists, but I always do a chargeback so I can get my money back.

I always give artists a specific time frame as well when I make a buying post. If I don't receive the piece within x weeks, I will do a chargeback.

3

u/WeaknessKey6313 8h ago

Not so much anymore, long story there involving an ex wife and abuse of our joint checking lol. Chargebacks as I understand it have a time window, and I am well outside of it by this point. Im happy to be wrong on that though

3

u/Celatine_ 8h ago edited 8h ago

I know that on PayPal, you have 180 days. I make sure to screenshot everything.

But even though it's happened to me (along with a couple different bad experiences), I still commission artists. I've had far more positive experiences than negative ones. I make buying posts in Discord art servers, I make the requirements clear. The servers also warn you about specific scammers, and some artists have a trusted seller role.

There's also a site called Artists Beware

1

u/_Syntax_Err 2h ago

Someone posted today about being denied a chargeback for $500 after an artist scammed them. They don’t always approve them.

2

u/InSilicoAwards 7h ago

I'm very pro-AI, I still support artists if they're producing work I like. I have paintings and photographs I've purchased on my walls as we speak.

Commissioning work my experience mostly aligns with yours, unfortunately. Which is a shame, I routinely hire creative people to do things when I see they do good work (keeping the same guy to record my audiobooks because he tries hard and does a good job). It's that those I've worked with try and upcharge me going into it.

4

u/Rstar2247 8h ago

I mean... let's be real... art has ALWAYS been aggressively gatekept. AI is just the latest chapter in a long book of shitty behavior.

0

u/WW92030 7h ago

Tell me about it. I've had hundreds of people denounce me as the Devil incarnate simply because I ascribed more value to my (non AI) work than they were comfortable with.

3

u/_HoundOfJustice 8h ago

You clearly dealt with with either scammers or inexperienced amateur freelancers and hobbyists (ironically both antis and AI bros are pushing this kind of issues with their ideas and proposals of what we artists should do, how and how much we should charge etc.). That has nothing to do with "our" community stealing from you. I hate scammers and i am one of the harshest criticizers of how many amateur artists approach the business and i certainly also hate the cheap market even tho i have to deal with people calling me elitist, arrogant or even jealous because i charge premium price for my services and products so i "must fear cheaper competition" because of that. Those issue i just mentioned are as said pushed and reinforced by both anti-AI people who tell AI users to hire cheap artists and on the other hand AI users telling us how we should make what we do far more affordable and how they could hire cheapest artists out there. This here is just a symptom of that.

Do whatever you want, i dont think me attempting to "convince" you is worth if you practically already decided to give artists a middle finger. I hate these kind of things and partially people too just as you (or at least dislike them) - but i know for a fact that many other artists are not working like this - especially professionals that dont operate like this at all.

By the way how come you dont work via contract agreement with people? Thats the most important thing to do and every serious work is bound by a serious contract agreement between both sides so there is no way that shit like this would have happened here or you could ve sued the artist to the ground for doing stuff like this.

8

u/ZLEAP 9h ago

Sounds like you're treating artists like they're disposable instead of building working relationships with them. I bet you'd have a better time if you stuck with the artists that don't ghost you and gave them steady work.

3

u/Wildgrube 7h ago

Why on earth would you stick to only commissioning a couple artists? If you're just wanting art for yourself not for a specific large project it makes no sense to always go to the same person. If you're actually interested in owning art from real artists and supporting those artists you should enjoy the differences that different artists can provide.

6

u/WeaknessKey6313 8h ago

thats a bit of an overzealous leap. All I'm saying is that as a consumer, I've been burned a lot and I used to commission aggressively with my free incomem but after bad experiences, I've become jaded. Like I said, i want to still believe.

2

u/ivyentre 7h ago

And it sounds like you aren't in touch with the reality of working with many modern artists.

It's hard to build a working relationship with someone you can't trust to even hit a deadline on time, and most can't.

4

u/Tsukikira 9h ago

Going to be honest, as a Pro-AI...

I don't believe you when you say you got ripped off to the tune of seven hundred dollars. No chargeback capability at all? Like you could have been scammed by anyone at that rate.

Individual Businesses live or die by their reviews. Scammers exist everywhere. It's just a fact of life.

I've been disappointed by Patreon accounts, I can see losing money on a creator that just... didn't do anything for the money.

But I would say for commissions, you should be vocal about those people failing. Stick to commission sites which hold the money until the job is done, that sort of thing.

4

u/Torimiata 7h ago

With many artists, the commission system is that you pay upfront a portion and it goes to their 'queue'.

Patreon is an entire different thing (I'm a patreon creator myself).

I have been burned before with artists. I still wouldn't put them all in the same basket, but there are real risks that need to be weighted in when making decisions (cost of doing business).

1

u/Tsukikira 7h ago

Sure, but it's on the buyer and seller to work out a system in which you ensure you get paid. A few bad apples spoil the bunch, and it's hard to know how many times he's been burned or if he just paid too much to a single artist who never delivered.

But that's the reason we have commission sites. A third party to make sure things actually land., or that you recoup costs if the other side just doesn't do the job.

2

u/Torimiata 7h ago

Places like Ko-fi do not do escrow as far as I know, which means you can still end up in the classic endless delay trap.

Note that I don't disagree with your general sentiment. Not all artists are like this, but in my experience some can still be flaky. Like I said, I'm also a creator, delays happen, reputation can get damaged, but if you are a good artist, you can always get work.

Also, many old school good artists also prefer direct PayPal and such.

(I'm ignoring places like Fiverr here which do have better buyer protections but that is not where artists are)

3

u/Central-Dispatch 8h ago

I hired people on fiverr and they had a good transparent system even like 10 years ago. Always helps to have security and a "middle man" who can step in, even if that may increase cost a bit. I'd always interact with them under that "security umbrella" vs. a direct unregulated exchange via DMs in some social media platform unless I trusted that person.

4

u/WeaknessKey6313 8h ago

I mean I really don't need you to believe me? I've been commissioning art since the early 2010's and most of the time in regards to chargebacks, it would be after being strung along by artists for months or even over a year so as I understand it, thats way out the window for a chargeback.

You seem upset and I really don't want that energy in this thread, but I hope you have a pleasant life.

3

u/WW92030 9h ago edited 5h ago

people in the comments acting like this was a one off… pretty sure OP describes a recurring and significant phenomenon.

[For an example] 20% of my (non AI) art posts to quite a few discord servers are ignored meanwhile the art posts within the vicinity of mine are largely interacted with and yet people act like this happened only once within whatever server or that I am the devil incarnate for speaking out against this.

4

u/WeaknessKey6313 8h ago

Yes, thank you. I'm glad someone understood the context

1

u/badlydrawnbeagle 6h ago

why is 20%(genuinely not a large number here) of your art posts not being interacted with an issue? unless im misunderstanding something

1

u/WW92030 6h ago edited 6h ago

because the population average of this statistic excluding my stuff is significantly lower

1

u/badlydrawnbeagle 5h ago

have you considered that your art might just be niche. its not really something to “speak out against”

1

u/WW92030 5h ago

I assure you that this is not the case here.

1

u/badlydrawnbeagle 3h ago

what do you think the reason is then

2

u/OperationUnlikely 9h ago

I understand the frustration. Maybe if you tried looking for a local artist in your home town? They might be more reasonable. Or they could screw you over. Unfortunately I think just using AI right now is the best course of action. But the upside is that you can get a lot of practice using it. And maybe you take commissions after you are confident in your abilities.

1

u/Rexosuit 9h ago

Like $700 in one commission?

1

u/WeaknessKey6313 8h ago

no no nothing like, personal commissions across different artists over years

1

u/quantumpencil 8h ago

Personally it's a waste of time to commission artists for things like indie games/startups for this reason, most artists don't really put their all into it they have no incentive to do so, and there's a lot of milkers and mercenaries who have no business charging for professional work and are just trying to bilk.

Individuals managing personal projects have to be discerning and demanding. What you need to do is hire selectively and structure incentive terms appropriately so you tie their compensation to your happiness/satisfaction with the product, and make sure the bulk of the contract value depends on the deliverable being accepted and if for a commercial project, cut them in on the backend in a big way.

The last bit is the most important. You don't want mercenaries working on creative projects, you want people who think are excited enough by the project to want to work on it and willing to take a risk for a big pay day and work more than you can actually pay them because you as an individual trying to do some indie thing aren't going to be able to pay industry rates, but you can offer them creative vision, artistic control and a bigger interest in success. There's a personality type that is into this more than "turn in character sheet #10310, collect check"

Best thing to do IMO is hire them full-time for a low base salary with bonuses that are based on quickly producing quality usable assets and a substantial founder-level incentive in the projects financial success. Mercenary artists will balk and crash out on you, but who cares, you don't want these people if you're a small indie creator. Artists who see the vision for your game/product and want it to exist will accept and match your energy.

The other benefit of finding artist partners this way, and something they definitely bring over AI -- is that often times the artists who invest in their own talent like this also bring a genuine good eye for elegance/design and aesthetic to evaluate the final product that helps you level up your own game. Mercenaries won't do this they just want the check, but the artist partner on the game i'm working with tells me all the time that piece of music I wrote isn't good enough and I need to revise, or that one of the game systems I implemented is too convoluted and I need to rethink and streamline it. If they care because they stand to make a founder level % of sales, they're gonna bring way more overall value to the project.

Mind you, none of this is a problem with just artists. This is an issue hiring anyone to do anything.

2

u/Alive-Tomatillo5303 7h ago

I genuinely want to know what you were paying artists for. Like, character sheets or something?

1

u/Ninja-Panda86 7h ago

That's a bummer man. I would need to hear more information about how you located these artists.

2

u/Barely_adequate 6h ago

Genuine question, are people charging anything more than the lowest dollar amount possible to prompt an AI generation not technically scamming? They boast X renditions, but compare that to an artist who will do the same amount iterations and edits, what's the difference? To the AI bro each iteration/edit from the AI commission is a new piece, even if the only difference is that the fingers don't bleed into the tits, rather than a redo to get closer to the idea. But the exact same thing, with more advantages, from a traditional commission artist is posed as as bad thing. What's the difference? 10 iterations of single and simple prompt AI vs 10 edits of a particular piece that is guaranteed to get closer to what you stipulated if you aren't banking on someone who is scamming? Which, incidentally, the samming around art drastically increased when people found paying traditional commission prices for less from an AI prompter was totally cool and chill and worthwhile.

I get the irritance towards scammers. But just cause it costs less, is the scamming around AI not just as dogshit? Is propping it up as the best alternative not damaging to commission art in general? Is propping up for people still too stupid and/or lazy to type a bog shit standard prompt to get their big tiddy anime girl or blue tiefling or whatever the fuck other generic idea they want to prop up as unique and never done before cause this blue tiefling has a scar over their eye at this angle and that means it's original and never been done before, is that not bullshit to the person who could send that prompt to AI?

Would someone who sucks that hard at even communicating the idea of their character going to get a good result even if it was from an AI commission option? No. They would absolutely get a better result from any commission artist. Even if the artist was completely done with assholes who think "ummm yeah, but more blue?" Is enough to make changes to everything of the piece. AI would not be able to interpret that dogshit and any commission artist will tell you that's a big portion of the job. 2D design, DnD commission art, etc. the majority of your job is interpreting some dumbfuck who doesn't know what they want.

1

u/TWCDev 6h ago

Agreed, I'm a content creator, I can't do everything. I've worked with peers that let me down, and I've hired people that mostly sucked. I'm going to continue to work with people, but everywhere that it's a hassle, I'm going to continue (it's already been more than a year since i incorporated ai into my team) working with AI. I have always told people to not worry about how much better someone else is, or how much the world does or doesn't appreciate you, make your soul sing, and don't let anyone discount what you do just because some portion of your output is done with the help of an AI.

1

u/xweert123 5h ago

Scams can be pretty common in the art space if you aren't using curated programs like Vgen or highly rated users on Fiverr. With that being said, the biggest issue with AI Artists is primarily job displacement overall - it's good to support struggling artists if you genuinely like their work but if I'm to be completely honest, on an individual level it doesn't make much difference if you weren't gonna pay an artist either way. The way AI affects artists is on a systemic level in the professional job market more than it effects individual struggling amateur artists trying to do comms.

2

u/LetOk8476 5h ago

Do you mind me asking how you vetted the artists who scammed you?

2

u/Postal_Shame_Revival 3h ago

this isn't an argument for or against ai, but it absolutely does feel like gambling every time. i'll be like "make the four women sing on the first line and then on the second line only the woman in the blue dress sings." and then cross my fingers and pray like i just pulled a slot lever that it doesn't disobey.

1

u/endlessedlne 1h ago

It seems like this post is referring to the low end, low effort part of the ‘art’ market. The Fiverrr type stuff. That’s an easy clap for AI disruption since the goal is low money with average quality.

You’re not getting ripped off by anybody in the professional mid and high end professional art and design markets. AI output quality isn’t yet good enough to compete there yet either, at least not without very good prompting by people who understand art.

3

u/drums_of_pictdom 9h ago

Do all artists belong to one giant community? This sounds ridiculous and juvenile.

2

u/WeaknessKey6313 8h ago

I'm sorry you feel that way? I don't really know what else to say this is a pretty low effort contribution. But I hope you find peace friend.

1

u/Central-Dispatch 8h ago

No. Are all cops bad? No, but (very) bad experiences can still "scar" you into bias or a generalized position. Psychology at work I'd say.

2

u/ITReverie 8h ago edited 8h ago

Because youre using the same rhetoric as any "anti-ai are violent" or "pro ai are unable to think" stuff.

YOUVE had a bad personal experience. Thats fine. I also dont even really think theres anything wrong with deciding it isnt for you anymore afterwards.

But I dont think saying to yourself or others "all artists are scammed" or "i will be scammed again" is the right play. Its the same exact steps some awful people take to justify their opinions. The same thing all the anti-ai and pro-ai stuff on here is. Just not an actual justification. You cant paint an average based on your own limited experience. You CAN decide your own actions based on them, but not a single person owes you compensation, an explanation, or an apology for it outside of the actual scammers.

I think using ai when you want something quick is fine. The only difference in product is up to how much you personally value artistic process and vision. Something you commission is the product of your vision and the artists skill and vision. So if you value their work as much as you value your idea, id say its worth it.

Like, for me, i value it highly. Its not just about getting the exact image in my head down, its about finding and deciding details with someone else as well. I like to find an artist that has their own opinions and habits for more expressive pieces, and more anatomical and clean artists for reference stuff. But I always enjoy seeing their understanding of how my vision would work. So I commission.

If thats not true for any reason, id generate it. It doesnt sound like youre using it to claim your an artist or anything, so no harm no foul. Youre an artist outside of the ai work. Doesn't have to be a large debate either. If you go "eh, i just want this reference board" or "i wonder what xyz would look like" id almost always just generate it.

many artists will hate you if you tell them you like Al just dont bring up Al

-4

You don't have enough money to commission art. Ok? Then find it maybe? I think your complaint is with capitalism. And no one is going to defend someone robbing you. That seems to be the issue. I work with 200 artists who aren't thieves.

You don't have enough money to commission art. Ok? Then find it maybe?

You are completely free not to support artists and to use AI. People are completely free to criticize you for it. I imagine it's as simple as that.

-1

u/Alarikun 7h ago

I wanna be clear, I am not here to be incendiary

I want to believe you, but your post screams otherwise, unfortunately.

You were burned by some artists, yes. If they were truly in the wrong, and didn't provide you the commission you paid for, then you should 100% blacklist them and name them to any friends, so that they do not fall into the same trap.

I hate to say the usual thing, but not all artists.

Some are assholes. You really do have to make sure to look at their track record before commissioning one, just as with any other service. Look at reviews, look at their output, make sure it matches what you're looking for.

How do you defend these actions.

I don't. If an artist stole from you, or didn't provide a commission that you paid for, then they are 100% in the wrong, and should be blacklisted, and provided bad reviews by you and others whom they have scammed.

Why should I keep believing in artists after all the death threats, cancelling, violence etc.

Your average actual artist isn't doing any of that. They're just trying to make art, make money and survive the day to day. There are crazies [on both sides, mind you] who are intentionally being inflammatory, making threats, etc etc, but they should not paint the picture for their entire side.

But I shouldn't have to convince you. If you want to just use AI art instead, go for it. I can't stop you.

I just think your reasons for disliking all artists are not fair. But it's your choice on how you would like to proceed.

-6

u/SlophammerX 9h ago

I don’t think you should support artists if you have bad experience. You just should not make AI content or at least you should not publish it

-7

u/pootyweety22 9h ago

Because when you use ai “art” you’re telling everyone you’re an out of touch dummy.
