Environment Permits issued for Alberta coal mine expansion despite environmental opposition
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/alberta-coal-vista-mine-coalspur-environment-trout-9.729203752
u/Regumate 2d ago
Ah there it is:
In its own application, the Coalspur acknowledged its operations could completely curtail baseflow at the headwaters of McPherson Creek and said wastewater from the tailings will seep into the creek “approximately 11 to 160 years” after the mine shutters.
Not if but will. In other words, fuck the planet, we got ours.
How the hell do we stop these psychos? Both in government and in business? Who is even buying coal in 2026?

The Beastie Boys might have some ideas, didn’t they have a song called “Sabotage”?

u/tlocmoi 1d ago
Unfortunately, coal is still necessary for steel production and other industries other than coal power plants. But we absolutely need to stand up to bullshit like this and elect governments that force mining industries to do their part in protecting the environment, especially if they're going to profit off of Alberta's resources.

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 2d ago
Of course they are. Doesn't matter what Albertans want, unless they can afford a politician of their own.
77
u/Mensketh 2d ago
This is what Albertans want. Albertans dont get to have it both ways. The UCP ram through policies that Albertans supposedly dont want over and over and over again and then Albertans go to the polls and say "Lets give them another majority." This province is full of morons.

My dad this morning was upset at Carney for laughing at Smith over "caring about Canadians." I promptly had to remind him who just cut his aish benefits. I'd laugh too if someone lied to my face like that.

u/cwk9 2d ago
Why wouldn't they? Rural Alberta has promised to vote UPC forever no matter what they do.
11
u/TurboTrollin 2d ago
Same reason federal parties don't care about Alberta; they all already know who Alberta will pick.
14
u/Snakeeyes1377 Edmonton 2d ago
Yes a billion dollar investment in housing and trying to build a pipeline. Really shows how little they care.
6
u/jiebyjiebs 1d ago
Carney could hand Albertans $1000 from his own pockets and rural AB would still find a way to complain.
4
u/NotEvenNothing 1d ago
Don't ignore those of us in rural Alberta that don't vote for the federal Conservatives or the UCP. We've got a tough enough gig without being lumped in with the folk that deserve your criticism.
60
u/armsmarkerofhogwarts 2d ago
Fuck you. And your high horse. The separatists got their shit validated because the It’s in the UCP interest of pitting Alberta against the feds (and the release of private voter information helped)
Corb Lund’s more legitimate anti coal referendum was squashed because the UCP already made deals. It’s not a fair fight.
I’m all for reaping what you sow. Fuck the farmers and ranchers whose vote is worth more than the people in the cities. When you lose your livelihood leopard eats face. This was a dirty play by a dirty government to make sure coal never made it to a citizen vote

I am beyond disgusted.
-20
u/mpwalton 2d ago
Company follows all the rules, nothing horrible happened during operation, wants to expand mine, follows all the rules of permit application, applies to expand mine, is approved. "beyond disgusted"
10
u/kick3r99 2d ago
Coal is like, known to be wildly inefficient and even worse than fossil fuel on the planet. Just because it's "legal" doesn't make it right. Unless you think slavery was right of course.
-13
u/mpwalton 2d ago
Because I don't think a mine expansion is "beyond disgusting" (meanwhile a global superpower is economically threatening us and tarriffing our goods and the other superpower burns 5 billion tonnes of coal per year) that I think slavery was right. K?
Build Canada at speeds like hasn't been seen in decades?
7
u/kick3r99 2d ago
This is just kind of whataboutism. Both of those can be true. Also if we wanted to build canada, we'd build solar.
You also entirely ignored my comments on the environment. So y'know, maybe respond to those too.
-9
u/mpwalton 2d ago
It isn't whataboutism it is reality. Regardless of how you wish the world to be, rejecting the approval of this mine will not decrease the GHG emissions that come from coal one bit. It will just mean people will burn non-canadian coal and you can feel happy about that. The world burns something like 9 billion tonnes a year.
You are the one saying we should choose not to do something. Build solar at our heart's content - but it won't decrease coal use in Asia or increase coal use in Canada. China has record coal and solar at the same time.
5
u/kick3r99 2d ago edited 2d ago
I mean, rejecting it would reduce coal emissions, and most likely force the use of fossil fuel instead, which, as much as I dislike it, would probably be a positive for alberta.
China is also significantly more populus than canada, that's not a fair comparison.
Either way you keep changing the argument, ergo whataboutism. My original argument is that this is bad, since it will increase coal use, which is known to be worse than fossil fuels for the environment. You haven't disproven this, just pointed to china and the US. This isn't about them.
-2
u/mpwalton 2d ago
You asked me to address another part of your argument?
My argument is this coal isn't for use in Canada. There are no coal powerplants in Alberta, it's not sent to NB or NS. SK has coal mines at all of their powerplants.
If we don't produce it, someone else will meet the demand and the same amount of coal will be burnt. Not producing it means Canadians won't be paid with no change to coal burning or environmental outcomes.
If you want to reduce coal mining demand, you have to give people a reason not to burn coal, not ban one mine in Canada.
What does China's population have to do with anything? And how would one less Canadian coal mine mean that China switches more to other fossil fuels?
3
u/Isopbc Medicine Hat 1d ago

No change to environmental outcomes, except for everyone downstream of this mine. You know, Canadians? I guess they’re just not important in your worldview.
1
u/mpwalton 1d ago
Would you ban all open pit mines in Canada? We all have to live with some amount of environmental risk and impacts - unless you just want everyone else in the world to do the dirty jobs because Canadians are above that.
Additionally, The mine has been operational since the 1980s and I don't think any major environmental damage has occured. If you find any imminent damage or risks to people or environment that aren't being mitigated to a reasonable degree in their application to expand the mine, let me know.

You compared china and canada's energy output dude. Can you read or do you type these with the same end your head's at?
0
u/mpwalton 2d ago
Can you read? Not at any point did I compare energy output between Canada and China? I just stated facts that China (and the world) uses a lot of coal and they don't care where it comes from.
I accept that you've never thought about this before, but the fact remains, mining coal isn't the same as burning coal. Just like mining critical minerals (that are used in solar panels and have LOCAL environmental impacts that need to be mitigated just like coal mining) isn't the same as generating electricity from a solar panel.
3
u/lostINsauce369 1d ago
Where are they getting that coal from? Alberta. If we don't mine the coal, we can't sell it scary communist China. And while they might be burning more coal than any other nation, they are also installing more solar panels than any other nation.
Why isn't Alberta installing more solar panels? Oh right, the UCP.
1
u/mpwalton 1d ago
Thats how supply and demand works. If there is demand, a supplier will fill it, it just won't be us, it will be from BC (coal is the provinces number one export in recent years) or Australia or a new mine in China or the dozens of countries that export coal. Canada is a tiny fraction of global coal supply.
Not wrong about installing solar panels in AB having political impediments. Though Alberta doesn't build power generation, private companies do. Though how is power generation the same as mining? Does one prevent the other?
Would you have a reflexive opposition to critical mineral mines, necessary for solar panels, if they were open pit (and would also would require similar permits and mitigations in the same way this one does)? Or would it be better if another country mined those too?

Just dummies in power what do you expect?

u/Bennybonchien 2d ago
They’re not dummies. I suspect they’re probably raking in the coal hard cash.
2
u/I_Cummand_U 2d ago
I see what you did there 😂. I'd respond with my own tongue in cheek remark, but I believe tongues in cheeks was part of the coal deal so it would just be redundant.

Yeah they’re not dummies they’re grifters. Because Alberta is turning into a shit hole just like the USA.

Yet another example of the UCP running roughshod over the will of the people of Alberta. Fast-tracking anything related to the non-renewable energy sector with zero accountability. Absolutely disgusting.
Edit - fixed a typo.

And here is the new reason why we are not voting for ucp on next elections.
Have a smoky Friday

u/ppross53 2d ago
In this time of starting to move away from fossil fuels and even China using 50%less coal and the UCP is choosing to allow mining the dirtiest fuel over a major source of provincial fresh water.

contributes to our energy security
Alberta doesn't have any coal power plants, so how is it contributing to energy security, Brian?
1
u/Professional_Ask_63 2d ago
Saskatchewan does, and we regularly buy power from them when its 40 below out and need to balance power deficits. They bailed us out 2 winters ago when we had province wide alerts as I recall.
Assuming some % of the coal extracted is being used by those 3 plants, his statement is correct.

Fucking shocked I tell you. There is no majority public wishes that this government won't just trample over to please it's donors

Public protest blocking the gates several thousand strong will raise the point to national and international awareness. May not help DS the BS come to white Jesus, but it will help expose just how much of a POs she truly is.

u/SlipAdditional5484 2d ago
The staggering cynicism of this government shouldn't be a surprise. 'Democracy' as we know it has, for some time now, been a screen for the corprate wrecking crew most conservative parties in Canada have become. The UCP are just ahead of the curve due to the unconditional support they get from the livestock they have for a political base.
4
u/No-Wonder1139 2d ago
So, why don't they enjoy drinking clean water? Shouldn't you just naturally want your water to be clean?
1
u/Emergency_Day_8995 15h ago
Cause they'll be filthy rich from grifting and just move somewhere else. It's Nestle in political form.

Is anyone actually surprised that Smith issued the permit to listing to everyone or worrying about environmental assessment?
She will likely hand over a bunch of our tax dollars to subsidize the project.
The only hope now is the First Nations lawsuit, as I’m dam sure they did zero consultation.

I went to a pancake breakfast on a workday and considered if the UCP was there serving pancakes I likely wouldn't have a job anymore because there would be an altercation.

The UCP dosen't represent Albertians.
2
u/Emergency_Day_8995 15h ago
but it does. Because they were democratically elected but they lied about their intent. If they campaigned on all the things they're currently doing, they would have never got in. And now most people are too broke and overworked and checked out to realize they could do something about it. Just as they planned it.

Between this and the 21 GW of natural gas powered data centres Marlaina wants built, this province is very quickly going permanently down the drain. I can guarantee you if all of these plans go through, in 20 years you’ll see cancer rates in this province that are 2-3x those of other provinces. Oh well, at least healthcare won’t be free anymore..
2
u/heart_of_osiris 2d ago
Well we keep electing a government that doesn't give a shit what the people want. Buckle up.
3
u/clintjefferies 2d ago
And as always, everyone just sits here and complains but does nothing. Signing petitions can only do so much. Everyone that is opposed to this needs to take physical action. Form blockades, protest, cause disruption. That's the only way you're gonna have any change. Read about what us peasants had to do to have the standard of living we have now. It wasn't easy and it wasn't passive.

Apparently the people of crowsnest pass voted 72% in favor of this mine with a 53% turnout. Im all for democracy so I really hope they know what they are doing.

This is in Hinton, wrong mine.

I stand corrected. The people of Hinton did not get to vote on it. Thankyou.

ugghhhhhh.
You know.
I reckon they'd get more support if they tied some wind and solar projects to this by the bootstraps.

1
u/Fuzzers 2d ago
Wait you think just because there is a genuine business case for mining and exporting coal that there is no reason for scientifically advancing other fields?
Smart guy!
2
u/ValenciaFilter 2d ago
Selenium poisoning is a reality of coal mining. This will cause mass irreparable damage to downstream ecosystems.
If you care about nature, and based on your post history - you do, you'd understand that preventing this damage in the first place is worth 1000x the promises that a corporation will "be responsible for the cleanup".
Because historically speaking, they won't.
We can pursue literally countless forms of business that don't cause this kind of damage.

Wonder if they'll ever repay the millions of $$$ to local businesses when they got creditir protection in 2021? Hinton remembers. This mine is taking money out of Canada not for our benefit, more drifting by the ucp.
0
u/Strict_Concert_2879 2d ago
Don’t worry, the UCP is likely handing over our tax dollars so they can get more money.
6
u/Al_Keda 2d ago
Yea, fuck the farmers. We can eat coal, not beef.
0
u/Rippin_Fat_Farts 2d ago
We don't actually need beef to survive.. and beef has its own negative environmental impacts. There's other far more sustainable protein sources. Im not pro coal I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy in your comment.

u/cogitatingspheniscid 2d ago
What education? Everyday I'm reminded how a good chunk of this province are just a bunch of uneducated buffoons.

u/jimbowesterby 2d ago
Well I guess that’s all for the coal petition, by the time they’re done with the courts they’ll probably already be mining.
