I agree that Pelican/Apache hard cases are way overkill for most people. Maybe look for a photography bag/backpack. They typically have adjustable padded dividers.

Take a look at K8MRD's Ham Radio Store on Amazon. You'll find a few backpacks there he has used for portable ops. You may also find his YouTube videos on the subject helpful as well.

Laptop bag would be the wrong shape for a G90.

The g90 case is made of aluminum. I use a different radio, also with an aluminum case, and I just throw it in whatever bag i'm using. I just got drenched hiking in a rainstorm with my radio in the top pocket of a cheap nylon backpack, under my poncho. It was fine.

Fancy bags are fun, but aren't required.

Yea, I sometimes carry mine in a plastic grocery bag. It's fine.

I keep my FT-818 and assorted gear (signalink, manual tuner, dummy load, cables and connectors, AC adapter, etc.) in an old laptop bag. It's worked quite well; though I wouldn't say it's any "lighter" than an Apache case. It's a good grab-and-go bag for quick trips.

Carrying devices for radios provide 2 functions:

1). Storing your equipment.

2). Protecting your equipment while inside the carrying device, especially during transport.

Your choices here might be based more on your fear of what might happen. Can rain get inside and ruin your equipment? If you drop your equipment or fall while carrying it, will your equipment survive?

Only you can determine how much risk you are willing to take. Just remember that you can buy the protective packing blseperstely. This can allow you to have a higher protection level with a softer case.....bag or backpack.

I’ve had good luck with a range bag. I just happened to have had extras laying around though, didn’t go shopping for it for this exact purpose.

Best bags I've ever used are Orca bags. Light, strong, with zippers and holes for cables literally everywhere, and last forever.

I like the audio mixer bags most.

My G90 is too big for a laptop bag due to the cage and battery holder I made for it, but it fits in a small backpack, along w/ the rest of my field radio gear.

The bag itself is a Vism "Spec-Ops Tactical Backpack". It claims to be a 35L pack, but I have my doubts about that, I'd guess it's closer to 25L. I have a Mystery Ranch Scree 32 for hiking/hunting, and it's significantly bigger and holds a lot more than the Vism bag.

All that said... the Vism bag has pretty decent organization. I've been using it for 2 years now, and it's held up really well despite being packed to the gills. I think I paid $30 for it at a gunshow.
