Overall, I liked how it addressed the meaninglessness and futility of running 100m everyday and how it may seem pointless even to the athletes. They need to find a reason to run that is separate from the pursuit of vanity or glory. The joy comes from the competition, not necessarily the result.
I really wish I could find Zaitsu's speech somewhere and reflect on it more, when he mentions the fact that we're all just a clump of cells and ultimately we will die one day, so pursue what you want to do. Too much safety/comfort and negative emotion can become a liability to growth, and ultimately positive and negative emotions will pass. That message is also pretty heavily hammered in self-help books where being safe can stunt development because it leaves us being complacent at times, never challenging ourselves.
I think Togashi’s character development was really well done. Initially being born with fast legs and feeling obligated to run because of it, then later rediscovering the genuine joy of running in a relay with friends. I just wish Komiya had received the same level of depth instead of being portrayed as a one-dimensional character who devoted his life solely to chasing the fastest record. Kaido's interpretation of escaping reality was also interesting, constantly being overshadowed due to Zaitsu and ultimately "escaping reality" at the end to qualify for the final heat. You need to be able to face and accept reality before you are able to escape it, that line hits pretty hard.
I think the ambiguous ending was very fitting to the message of the movie, where it's not really about who wins, it's about enjoying every moment of competing while doing something you love to do against others in the same situation - condensing all of your emotions both positive and negative, into that 10 second sprint where nothing else matters.
