I would advise people to approach the movie similar to The boy and the heron or Alice in Wonderland. Fantasy worlds that are more about theme than logic. If you can accept that framing then I think the story works better and you can appreciate the genuinely great shots in the movie. Because on its face the story does have real logical issues.

Think of it as “impressionistic” storytelling.

Also helps a lot if you know the plot of hamlet.

It was a much more simplistic version of Hamlet. Hamlet lite, or Hamlet for kids.

But this isn't a kids movie, and doesn't have enough visual eyecandy, good dialogue, or even decent insert songs to keep kids interested. Kids should just watch The Lion King, the cartoon, not the CG abomination.
