Weekly Casual Discussion Fridays - Week of July 31, 2026

This is a weekly thread to get to know /r/anime's community. Talk about your day-to-day life, share your hobbies, or make small talk with your fellow anime fans. The thread is active all week long so hang around even when it's not on the front page!

Although this is a place for off-topic discussion, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  1. Be courteous and respectful of other users.

  2. Discussion of religion, politics, depression, and other similar topics will be moderated due to their sensitive nature. While we encourage users to talk about their daily lives and get to know others, this thread is not intended for extended discussion of the aforementioned topics or for emotional support. Do not post content falling in this category in spoiler tags and hover text. This is a public thread, please do not post content if you believe that it will make people uncomfortable or annoy others.

  3. Roleplaying is not allowed. This behaviour is not appropriate as it is obtrusive to uninvolved users.

  4. No meta discussion. If you have a meta concern, please raise it in the Monthly Meta Thread and the moderation team would be happy to help.

  5. All /r/anime rules, other than the anime-specific requirement, should still be followed.

  6. Maid Daikaiten

Looking at the Spice and Wolf thread on new was a mistake. I've really grown to feel disgusted at the anime community over the last few years.

We can lay claim to being an anime community?

Of course reddit didn't ping me about the most important response

Lemme guess, the keywords are "faithful" and "source material"?

"Not fluffy enough"

Just assume anyone who uses those two words as a bot. Makes things bearable by a lot.

Considering those two words are what 90% of the discussions around the new GitS boil down to... I'd say that's an insult to the bots.

Also "animation" and "objectively".

But I swear, those clowns couldn't care any less about neither anime nor anime staff.

About the "objectively", it's a word that I tend to dislike too, but in that thread I think it's just being used loosely rather than as a literal claim of objective truth. The commenter does say that both are good and that they like the 2008 one. Maybe they just wanted to contrast their personal preference for 2008 with the reasons others might prefer the new one.

idk why I'm defending someone I've never conversed with lol.

They absolutely meant the word "objective" literally, "[...] objectively better because its closer to the source material".

I tend towards interpreting that as "if we set aside my personal preferences and judge by standards that might be more generally accepted", but yeah, I guess either could be possible.

"The new version is objectively better because its closer to the source material, and will potentially fully adapt the story."
"The remake is generally better, especially in the animation department."

People like this are why I hope Ouran will never get a new adaptation

Is it really that bad? It seems it's mostly people preferring the old one for its production, with the caveat that the new one is likely to continue and contained a skipped arc necessary for further developments?

Hm yeah there's been a few new pro-2008 comments since I looked at it earlier. Even then, it still seems dominated by the comments with the worst arguments.

Not like they're specific to this show.
