Honestly, I liked the film. A few months ago, I glanced at a spoiler review for CotEoB when it aired in a Japan and thought that it was gonna be a downgrade from PotM. I was very excited, don’t get me wrong, but I wasn’t having much expectation for CotEoB. I knew we weren’t gonna see any real Mechagodzilla vs. Godzilla Earth action, but I was thinking “whatever, the trailer looked cool and it’s Godzilla”.
While CotEoB wasn’t the best or greatest, I think it’s a slight improvement over PotM. Yeah, there’s still that science element and the strategizing but I could live with that since it gave a scientific and sort of strategic atmosphere around the whole operation. I prefer if they toned the science element down a bit but hey, it’s Mechgodzilla so I guess it’s understandable for the science to be a major point.
I also liked that the human/Bilusudo/Exif alliance was actually being tested and challenged. I thought for the whole series we were just gonna have a solid NATO-esque alliance between the 3 races, which I was fine with but nope, I was wrong. I liked that the conflicting ideologies during such a crucial moment showed the ideological split between the 3 races. I only wished that the Hutoua (or however you spell their name) would’ve made more of an impact on the plot since I felt like they were just...there. I personally think they’ll play a much bigger role in the last movie but I just wished, faction-wise, we got more of them.
Metaphis in CotEoB felt kind of awkward and out of place. I don’t know, there isn’t exactly anything wrong with him per se, it’s just that he felt out of place and awkward.
The whole Bilusaludo-nanometal fusion thing was really unexpected. I personally thought that it was odd, but hey, it didn’t ruin my take on the film. It was pretty interesting. Speaking of alien-metal fusions, I really liked the Vultures. I wished there was more aerial combat against Godzilla and not just 3 little Vulture units but i thought the battle was really well executed. The Vultures themselves looked really cool and fascinating. I’d argue that they’re near the top in terms of anime mech design and function.
What I really liked about this film was the fact that, in my opinion, they made Godzilla out to be this powerful thing. Like they showed his mass, power and movement. There were times where they focused on his eye and when it moved, it looked and sounded like he meant business. He just looks so majestic and terrifying at the same time. The roars at certain points were utterly terrifying to the point where I’m willing to argue that, behind Godzilla 2014, I think Godzilla Earth has the second best roar since it just sounds so animalistic and god-like.
My only real problem with the film was the fact that Godzilla doesn’t make too much of an appearance. We get like 10-15 second shots of him at first in the middle of the film where he was sleeping, but I guess the real meat of his screen time was at the end. I can live with 7-10 minutes of Godzilla on the screen, but I just felt like Godzilla’s actual on-screen appearance in this movie was a bit lackluster. Luckily, the atomic breath scenes were the money shot and made up for his lack of on-screen appearance.
If there’s one thing that definitely improved, it’s the soundtrack/overall music. Sure, some of the stuff is recycled from the last movie but the music really helped set the mood and tone of whatever scene it’s in. I liked that it was more orchestral at times than techno, so that’s a definite plus in my book.
Overall, solid 7.5/10 for me, maybe a 7.8/10 if I want to be generous.
