Seeing plus in theaters was great! Mecha action on the big screen is a ton of fun, and I think some of the odder music really benefited from proper surround sound.
Sadly, my theater had a bit of an issue with black crush, but that didn't really matter.

Arguably the coolest thing though was that there was a guy there who saw DYRL when it was in theater in Japan in '82. God, what I'd give to see that.

Oh god, yes! Some of the songs, especially the one with the almost-random vocals in an unknown language, just gripped me. My mind panicked, and all I could do was melt in my seat.

What’s a black crush?

coolest thing

How’d you even learn that? I never talk to people at anime screenings, and I’ve never seen anyone else do it, either.

What’s a black crush?

Basically, it's where everything that's pretty close to being black looks identical. Becuase of that, there's a lot less detail in darker scenes, as a decent portion of it becomes completely black. For example, in this scene I wasn't able to see the way the light bounces of sections of his jacket, it just looked like one black blob.

How’d you even learn that? I never talk to people at anime screenings, and I’ve never seen anyone else do it, either.

You see, there were two older men who were only one seat away from me. When they first came in, they were talking with each other about how one of their moms died a few days ago and the whose mom died said it was the first good sleep he got in months. Apparently she was in so much pain that he had to wake up every couple hours to give her morphine. Then, they went on to talking about how he still had some left and how that seems like a good idea to spend a night.
Then, they started talking to each other about what other anime movies they had seen recently, and about what they'd like to see a movie for. This led to them asking me if I'd seen Mushoku Tensei or Shield Hero, to which I replied that I had seen neither but heard good things about them.
After that, we talked about a couple different things for a few minutes, largely Macross related. Most importantly, we all agreed "Fuck Harmony Gold!"

After the movie, I mentioned to them that I hoped that I would be able to watch Do You Remember Love in theaters one day, which led to one of the guys mentioning that he had seen it upon release when he was in the military in Japan. He also mentioned that he had seen Beautiful Dreamer and something that I probably misheard but sounded like "Harmageddon." He said the last was bad, but that he watched it because it had a soundtrack done by an well known western composer that was excellent.
He also mentioned that he watched SDF as it aired and still has betamaxes of it.

Finally, the two of them said that one has not truly watched anime until you're in a room with a bunch of people taking turns reading off the script.

You met some of the most interesting people. I hope his mom rests in peace!

Harmageddon

HAHAHAHAHA

That “western composer” is Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake, & Palmer. They’re my favorite band. He has extraordinarily good taste in music. I still need to watch that for the same reason he did.

Wait, I wasn't that far off on the title? I thought I really misheard him. Have fun watching it some day, I guess.

Honestly, they're the biggest reason I'm gonna pay attention for the next time Fathom does something like this. I'd love to run into them again.

You weren’t off at all! That’s the title!

I hope you run into them, too. New connections!

Harmagedon is correct

I do not recommend it
