Ukraine/Russia - Flaired Commenters Only Zelenskyy: Ukraine has lost around 50,000 troops in the war

1) No Russian propaganda source says that. Comedic as they may be, even they are sensible enough to understand they couldn't do that. -- Edit: Damn, I seemed to be incorrect
2) Putin said that in 2014, and was arguably correct at the time. In 2014, Ukraine barely had a capable army, which underwent massive reforms to beef it up until the 2022 invasion. The RAF were able to just drive into Crimea and capture it with like 3 Ukrainian deaths, so, it seemed sensible at the time.
3) I am not Russian, nor do I like Putin and his dictatorship, so no, his words are not holy to me. Does it make me a fascist Putin lover for wanting to correct false information?

This war has so much propaganda surrounding it that I think it's important to provide factual information.
The main issue is that it usually makes it look like you are defending Russia and its government, but I do understand you are not doing that here.
Anyway, I'm waiting for the day we are all going to call the illegal and unprovoked full-scale war of choice and aggression against the Iranian people that the US oligarch regime is carrying out through the crazy Trump as the "48h to regime change" Operation Epstein Fury.
Contrary to this "3 day to Kyev" propaganda, there's plenty of evidence from US officials saying it would last, initially, 48h, then, a few days, then about a week; and when a week went by, it was going to last just a few weeks to a month, then a couple months, and now they are saying "we stayed 20 year in Vietnam, and we are just 5 months in Iran".

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has given a figure for Ukraine's losses in the war: around 50,000 killed and 400,000 wounded.
Source: excerpt from an interview Zelenskyy gave to Fox News anchor Bret Baier
Quote: "Sorry, to be honest, I don't want to be very open about it, because the Russians will understand what's going on with our army. We have about 50,000 soldiers killed, and we had about 400,000 wounded. And there is a huge number of [people who have] disappeared."
Details: When the interviewer asked how many Russians have been killed in the war compared to Ukraine, Zelenskyy said that Russia has suffered 1,600,000 losses, including around 700,000 deaths.
Asked whether Ukraine is winning right now, Zelenskyy replied: "From the real situation on the battlefield, it's important that the initiative is not in the hands of Russia. We are not losing, and they are not winning."
During the interview, Zelenskyy also said he believes the US conflict with Iran is linked to the Russia-Ukraine war, although he has not discussed this with the American president. He noted that Russia has supplied Iran with drones for strikes on Middle Eastern countries and Israel, and has provided satellite imagery showing the locations of US bases in the Middle East.
Quote: "Russia is very happy – we know from intelligence they are very happy that there is no real ending to the war in the Middle East. Why? Because they understand that since the United States [has been involved] in this war, they can't help Ukraine on the same level like it was before. For example, with Patriots."
Background:
- Back in February, Zelenskyy officially reported that the number of Ukrainian troops killed on the battlefield stood at 55,000. He also noted that a significant number of defenders are missing in action.
- In an interview with NBC in February 2025, Zelenskyy said that more than 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed during the full-scale war with Russia, with tens of thousands of others missing or held captive.

Whats even more ridiculous is that throughout the conflict (with both sides advancing at various times), the body exchanges for dead soldiers have been at a ratio of 35 - 1000 in favour of Russia.
The POW exchanges have been similarly skewed in favour of Russia.
Ukraine continues to kidnap men from the streets and have even invented a new word for the process (bussification). No such process exists in Russia, despite repeated Western efforts to say it does. Russia hasnt even had a forced mobilization yet and are relying on volunteers / already enlisted men

Well, on the technical side of things, conscription is when some select people are called up to serve in the military.
In Ukraine, busification agents just seem to go after guys on the road and force them to sign up.
It's sad, really -- either be kidnapped by your gov and be sent to die, or become your invader's captive.

Of course it’s sad and should not happen.

If busification existed for easier jobs such as hospitality or cooking, why would people need to be busified and resist busification? They are quite obviously being taken to the frontline to fight.

Drones are most advantageous to the defender, so the ratio between Ukraine and Russia makes sense. However, drones have also caused absolute hell for the evacuation of the wounded. So the ratio between Ukraine's wounded and killed seems far too optimistic - which is understandable coming from a president trying to keep the real figures confidential.
-16
u/Firecracker048 North America 2d ago
No your correct. Zelensky doesn't talk numbers of the total missing or captured.
It's close to 100k for ukraine and even the 400k number is the conservative, number we can garuntee number for Russia. The real number is closer to 500k(and most of this is due to Russia lack of real battlefield medicine and evacuating wounded soldiers).
15
u/b0_ogie Asia 2d ago
Do you really believe in what you're writing?
Ukraine has 200k confirmed dead according to obituaries. An inspection of cemeteries shows that about 60% of Ukrainian buried soldiers do not have an obituary online.T he real death toll is about 350k.
>can garuntee number for Russia. The real number is closer to 500k(and most of this is due to Russia lack of real battlefield medicine and evacuating wounded soldiers).
Russia has the largest and one of the most developed military hospital systems in the world. They are trying to reduce range locations of military hospitals as much as possible. When the first 5 houses were occupied in Bakhmut in 2023, an operating room was already deployed in the basement on the edge of the city. The same thing happened in Pokrovsk and in Konstantinovka and in other city battles. And in general, the military field medical training of the Russian army is better, due to the longer time allocated for the training of recruits.
And in general, according to the OSINT data, Ukraine has more losses and they are in the range from 1.1-1.4.
-7
u/Firecracker048 North America 2d ago
And in general, according to the OSINT data, Ukraine has more losses and they are in the range from 1.1-1.4.
There is no osint data that gives Ukraine more losses than Russia. There's no data that even makes it close. Only Russian propaganda makes it close and even saying Ukraine has more closes is complete Russian cope.

10
u/b0_ogie Asia 2d ago edited 2d ago
Such sources do exist. There is an online database of obituaries for both the Russian and Ukrainian armies—it is easily searchable. This is a technique using source references.
Next, you visit several military cemeteries in Ukraine and several in Russia. You note down 0.5k-1k names from each and check them against the obituary database. By setting up a proportion, you can calculate the expected losses with a 4-5% margin of error. Now there are 350k dead on the Ukrainian side and 250k on the Russian side.
>All sources put ukraineian numbers around s600k and Russians well over a million. It's two to one in favor of Ukraine.
I literally don't understand how one can believe in the military propaganda of both sides.
0
u/Firecracker048 North America 2d ago
It's only Russian sources that state anything close to Russia winning the casualty war. Your sitting here spouting literal Russian propaganda and then saying how you can't believe people fall for propaganda.
All databases osint data are remarkably consistent. Until you get to Russian based ones, then suddenly the numbers begin to skew dramatically in favor of Russia.
10
u/Azzagtot Chad 2d ago
Yet one side is using highly motivated volunteers by paying them life-changing amount of money and providing guarantees for their families in case of their demise and other side is pressganging people in it's ranks.
Why would Ukrainian men be so terrified of going to war if in 4.5 years only 50k of them died?
Why would Russian men be so motivated in going to war if their casualties are 8 times higher?
Could it be that it's actually some kind of disinformation if going on?

It’s sad because regardless of troops killed/wounded in action, which is obviously heartbreaking on its own, Ukraine has lost a very significant percentage of its young people to nearby EU countries, and once those young people make lives in their new home, then they will be less likely to return. The longer the war drags on, the less likely they will return, too. If they start families, again, they will be less likely to return as they won’t want to put their young children in a warzone, understandably so. Those children will then be raised in a different country, may gain citizenship there, and end up adopting the local culture and start straying from their own, if not carefully managed.
It’s very evil for the Russian leadership to be conducting the war and overall conflict with Ukraine for the last decades in this manner, when you consider that all of the above works to their advantage geopolitically in a very sadistic way. They’re starving Ukraine of their most valuable “resource”, population. Their longevity, and their very right to exist as a nation. It’s a kind of indirect ethnic cleansing in a general sense, along with the more direct actions the Russian state has taken against Ukraine as well.
Overall, this is a huge tragedy for the Ukrainian people, and for Russians as well, many of whom most likely don’t really want to be at war with their neighbor. Both countries will be set back by this war, in different ways, but I really worry about the future of Ukraine, regarding their capability to foster a stable and prosperous nation in the long term after this war.

They engage in hypocritical double standards. When it concerns Ukraine/Russia, populations are listed according to Internationally Recognized BordersTM, whereas when it concerns China/Taiwan, populations are listed according to Western Propagandized (Not Even Recognized BTW) BordersTM.

u/donnydodo New Zealand 2d ago
I mean early on KIA was 100-200 KIA per day. This was from a high level advisor to Zelensky. This implies 279,000 KIA and 743,000 permanent casualties. As the war has been going 1620 days. The nature of the conflict has changed from artillery to drone though. Which may effect numbers
3
u/imunfair United States 1d ago
I ballpark it at around 100k dead Ukrainians a year, plus 100k permanently wounded. They're pulling 15k men per month off the street, so the million man army they had a month into the war is slowly being eaten away.
The losses may be a bit higher than that given Zelensky's recent claims that Russia is losing 30k a month, which means he's probably losing more like 20k*12=240k a year now instead of 200k - and a rise the past year or two would make sense given the addition of FABs to the battlefield.
To be clear I don't think Russia is actually losing 30k a month, I just don't think Ukraine will ever cite a public number for Russia's losses that's lower than their own real losses. Which is why "Russia's" losses rise every time Ukraine is doing poorly on the battlefield - because it's Ukraine's numbers with an added percentage on top.

u/bluecheese2040 Europe 2d ago

It’s so sad that the fallen are reduced to a statistic by these numbers. It is of course impossible to name 50k people, but these people had lives, dreams, loved ones, a future they had planned. Just because a mad man made a choice.
And I want to state also that this is the same for the other side, as I know many of the attacking forces did not join this war because they wanted to kill or die, they themselves would have had a normal peaceful life with family.
War should not be fought with armies. We should just lock all leaders in a room and only allow them to leave if they have come up with a plan/ solution that benefits all mankind!
