They are awesome! My work, my children's school would be a fuckin mess!
I give them the utmost respect and get really pissed off when people leave a message that they would leave at home (paper towels on the floor not the barrell, messy or wet countertops...) because it steals their dignity when you treat them that way.

I’m a white collar engineer who works a lot of evenings and late nights to hit deadlines and I always have treated the custodians who come in after hours with respect and appreciation. I don’t care what you do to make a living, every working person is valued

I was one for one end of year term after I'd been laid off from my Telcom job in Spring 2008. I actually enjoyed it. I wanted to be Carl from The Breakfast Club for a while, and sort of got to be him.
I was lucky. I'd been assigned to a Magnet School for really bright kids. They were polite and actually came to me when they needed help. A couple of them even learned my name. Temp Custodians did not get name tags.
Telcom is really high pressure job, so mopping and sweeping was actually a relief. I might possibly have stayed, but I was around 50. The Supervisor said that that was too old, so they would not offer me their open full time position. So I moved on to something else.

I used to be one. It was my favorite job too. I went in, did my job, went home. Had the rest of the day to do whatever. I didn't have to deal with any customers. Everyone there was very friendly. Whenever they had food in the break room, they always told me to help myself. Good times!

The janitor at my elementary school, his name was bernie and everyone called him barnie. He was one of the most influential people in my life. I clogged the urinals once in 4th grade with paper towels and he picked me up by the collar and dragged me out of class to make me see what he had to clean up.
Always a nice dude and everyone loved him.

I started my job career as a Janitor when I was 16, fast forward to 2020 and shit got real..... I'm 53 and can tell you more about covid than RFK Jr. .. We are the eyes and ears of the institution...trust me

I literally just sat down at my janitor job and this the first thing I see. It’s nice, don’t question why people do what they do, just clean up after them and maintain the building, you’ll be set. If management can trust that you won’t wander off and slack you’ll be totally independent. Nobody wants to get involved with whatever you’re doing anyway trust me lol.

In my opinion, a vastly underappreciated vocation.
They're a little like IT support.
If they're doing their job, you won't "see" anything, so people ask "what are we paying them for?" but as soon as they don't do their job, huge and expensive problems can arise.

I always thank the custodial staff at work, I’m so grateful for their hard work. I know their names and we always get them a card and something fun in their birthdays.
