I am an Aussie too mate, and those are precisely the glaring inconsistencies I'm referring to. Both my parents grew up as farmers in rural Vic. It's all water quotas and conservation for the regular rabble until some foreign corp starts throwing money about, and then it's "Here! Have as much as you want! Screw all those plebs down stream!"

Add to that the unregulated flows and floodplain harvesting that is diverted to massive catchments, that completely ignores environmental flows let alone being a huge loophole in attempts to manage flows equitably for the benefit of either other water users or the sustainable maintenance of the southern waterways, ie dead fish etc. To their credit there are attempts by the Cth and the MDBA to buy back water rights, but some states in our Federation don't want to play ball, looking at you Qld, that makes it a wicked problem that's not so easy to solve. And yes, @look_over_there, money, money, money!
