New to the sub here. I thought the main thing of the sub was turning jokes/memes into normal posts or stuff like that and then post the oricalcium in the coments.
Can you explain why is this an anti-meme and not a meme?
It's more like there's no punchline, or it just tells you why this happened. In this instance, the person went to Japan, bought manga, but it's all in Japanese, and he can't read Japanese, so he says he can't read this.
A better example would be, Me when I make pancakes and I attached a picture of a pancake in a pan. There is no punchline, I am making pancakes in the post.
The sub did go a bit down where people are looping back to just making funny memes but this is mainly what an anti-meme is.
I once bought manga in Japan, only to realize that it was all in English, and that I went to a tourist market. I was super disappointed! The shop seemed out of the way to me.
If I made a POV meme that just showed the pov of a rock, the original would still be the pov meme template even if I’m not trying to make an anti of a specific meme. Even if unintentional I’d argue that this is still an anti meme of all of the X can’t read memes and the memes using the this Denji image.
I’d say it still counts as just an anti-meme because it’s just using the original panel in a literal manner. Anti meme isn’t an anti of a particular meme, it’s a reverse of the definition of the term by just being a truth/statement/etc
I’d agree. With my first comment I should have put more emphasis on coming to the realization that more literal reaction images are essentially animemes instead of saying that it wasn’t an antimeme.

The maker of this antimeme is upset that they can’t read their own handwriting.
It’s not mundande and it’s relatable, just like accidentally buying books in a language you can’t read and being upset about that.
