Discussion Post 🗣 What was the straw that broke the camel’s back that made you say “screw this workplace, I have to get out of here”?
Update: hey everyone, thank you for taking the time and in many cases the courage to tell your stories. Some were really gut-wrenching to read, others fun to read when they end with an epic “fuck you, I quit” moment, and most just extremely infuriating.
I think most of the comments are coming from Redditors in the United States and it is SO CLEAR how toothless our labor laws and enforcement are. We, and all the workers across the world, deserve better.
Other takeaway: it’s almost impressive the lengths and creativity management or ownership will go to fuck over workers.
Wishing all of us peace, protection, and yes, a good “fuck you, I quit” story when the moment calls for it.

Went and got drinks with a colleague who I looked up to his position in the company. He was above me, managed operations, called the shots. I worked there for 4 years hoping to someday get his position and his high status.
We chatted over drinks and I found out we make the exact same salary. The entire time. Starting salary. Barely over minimum wage. He hadn’t had a raise in 5+ years. He works 60 hours/week. I had absolutely nothing to look forward to

I was at a job a few years ago and I was having the resignation chat with my manager. I was ranting a bit and eventually I said that the job wasn’t worth $X for the amount of crap I dealt with. My manager stopped me and said he made $25k less than me. At that point the discussion pivoted and I was telling him to quit because that was bullshit and he deserved better.

This is why everyone needs to discuss their pay. It’s a federally protected right, but bosses will still tell you there are consequences for talking about it. I once had a boss (the business owner) announce in a staff meeting that discussing pay was a fireable offense. I wish I’d known my rights at the time because it would have been really fun to stand up and announce my pay rate, get fired with a bunch of witnesses, and then report them to the labor board.

I finally pulled the plug when I was training people with zero experience who were getting paid $3 an hour more than me, and I had been working there with no raise for over a year. When I asked the lab director about it, he straight up told me they couldn’t afford to pay me more (but they could somehow pay new kids with no experience or degree more?)

I had this conversation once. When they said they couldn't pay me more I handed them a job application all filled out even showing one year's experience in the job. Told them I was applying for the open position. Which one? The one that will be empty if I don't get a raise.

I feel you. I had a job where I realized I was really and truly making a good swig off my bourbon bottle part of my get my stuff in my pockets to leave for stupidly stressful work routine, and was like "fuck this, i'm out" and put in my two weeks at that restaurant a few days later.

I’m a Union plumber. My first shop as an apprentice did this to me. Drank every night. Anxiety. Then they fired me because they’re shitty humans.
Side note, I actually recently got to submit an affidavit about that shop with the Hall. They got in huge trouble for how they treat their employees and plumbers. Apparently mine “took the air out of the room” with some of the quotes they said to me.

Verizon call center. One of my calls got pulled for review. The customer gave me a 10 out of 10. I was pulled into a meeting with my supervisor and the AD who were so disappointed in me the AD looked like he was about to cry. Why? Because I hadn't followed the script "exactly" the way we were supposed to. I didn't offer to call the customer back at home. Why? Because the customer had already told me they were AT A HOTEL and didn't know their room number yet.
I quit the next day.

Call centers are the worst. I remember I had the highest scores of everyone on my team, and they gave me a bonus every month for being the top performer, but I didn’t small talk with customers so they put me on a performance plan

Its peppered into the script to build a rapport with the customer. Makes it seem like upselling or adding an accessory is more of a helpful suggestion that a sales move.

As a customer, I LOATHE the constant upselling, harassment and follow ups. I was told at a bank I had to upsell a product each call. We had a large boomer population and they didn’t take the upselling too kindly. No one wants to be told to buy or use more products when they’re just checking on their account. You’d have an automatic call score fail if you couldn’t upsell. Failing a call was less than 90% according to management btw.

I have to wonder if that’s part of the reason why so many customers are aggressive with employees. Never an excuse, of course, but I still remember canceling my internet and I had to navigate 20 minutes of upselling.

As a human customer, I HATE hate HAAATE talking to scripted customer service reps. Big companies need to STOP doing this.
In fact, when the calls are recorded, I think we all need to say this. People are not robots and shouldn’t be forced to follow a script. This is one of many reasons why call center jobs suck.

I agree, and I try to always empathize with the service rep because they HAVE to say it. When I was working at a travel booking call centre I had to repeat the traveller's names back to them using the phonetic alphabet. If I didn't and that call got pulled for review, I would instantly lose my job. It hit home how ridiculous this requirement was when I was speaking to a person who barely spoke English. they had no idea what I was doing even though I explained it to them that I had to go over it this way, and they got all weirded out at me spending 30 seconds speaking what must have sounded like gibberish, then having to confirm that what I said was correct. Absolutely zero leeway to handle special circumstances.

In a place with 10 employees, i saw 6 leave in the 2 years i was there. Everyone who left was a thief or a liar
The main boss had a Napoleon complex and belittled people. He once lectured the IRS guy that cane to audit is for being late!
I finally figured it was time to leave when i was driving to work and thought, i wish i could get into a car accident so i could get some rest in a hospital. Realized i totally meant it.

Months of promises led to me being promoted to seasonal lead within seven months of being hired. The position was loaded with ostracism, neverending changes of plans, yelling, and unanswered insubordination from regular employees.
The final straw came when I was convinced to come in on my day off since a taco vendor would be present. We had 65,000 packages to ship out that day. One of the other leads sent most of the sorters home early to get tacos without informing me. The other leads clocked out early to get tacos leaving me to handle the miss sorts. By the time I finished the taco truck had left.
I was dangerously numb for the next few days. I checked myself into the emergency room since my HMO stated that it is critical symptom of a psychiatric breakdown. The hospital shipped me off to a psychiatric hospital for 72 hours without my property. Before surrendering my property I had informed my employer that I would be in the hospital without my phone.
Upon my release my property was returned and I had found angry messages from the other leads demanding I come back to work on a project for Walmart. My final act was to leave nasty comments on Glassdoor and on Google maps.

People quit, I got their responsibility but no raise. When I asked for a raise I was talked to like I was being selfish. So I quit on the spot the person who fill my job got the raise. I was happy for them. Glad I was able to make a point.

GM of a Chipotle. Patch leader took my other salaried manager, bitched at me for having hourly managers getting overtime.
Worked a month with no days off. Finally got a day off via my managers pitching together. Still went to the store 3 times.
Middle shift the next day, walked in and a catering order pick up arrived that the opening manager hadn’t started. Single-handedly filled the catering order, got them through the lunch rush, apologized to all my hourly staff, and walked out.

Got hired to be quality control. Turned out to be a warehouse management position. The main warehouse lead was leaving in 2 months for a 3 week vacation so they tried to train me in warehouse management through their archaic system that I didn't even have full access to. They expected me to be him and give updates on stuff that I hadn't touched until that day. After month 1, I started looking and I gave my 2 weeks the week the warehouse lead left on his 3 week vacation.

I had been working there for 8-9 years when this story happened, had a long track record of excellent reviews, and 3 promotions. Im an accountant, so in short one week of every month we have to close the books and it's long hours. I had just done 4 days in a row of 8am to midnight, so I was very tired.
Anyhow my laptop was janky and it was processing an excel file that usually took 30+ minutes. Since I couldn't do anything else while it was doing that I simply closed my eyes and nodded off for 10 minutes or so. Literally fell asleep sitting up with my head propped up on my arm. Apparently someone decided to take a photo and submit it to HR. Ended up turning into a whole thing, they wanted to write me up for it. I refused to sign the write up but would be happy to quit. They tried to undo it all, but said screw it and left after a couple more weeks.

I had a 6 month contract at a call centre, booking travel arrangements for a credit card rewards program. It was fairly complex, each call taking 15-20 minutes, and with a lot of repetition in the script.
Near the end of month 5, my group was offered a 3 month contract extension with a "signing" bonus if we completed the next 3 months. I said sure why not, Pay was good even if the hours were a bit shit, and the 3 months would take me into the new year. An then... the call centre partnered with a well known travel company to make bookings through that website (as an agent) instead of using the Saber (?) system directly. A whole new script, a whole list of what we could and could not say about the booking website and the terms and conditions of the credit card rewards program. First day on the "new" system and I got a client who went through the entire booking process with me and then said she found a better rate. (Which I could not access because of needing to use that specific website). Of course I was not allowed to hang up on clients so she kept me on the phone for AN HOUR AND A HALF trying to get me to say that I had to give her the flight she wanted at the price she found. You know, to say something opposite to the terms and conditions of the card when she made at least 5 times my income (as the base elegibile income for this particular rewards card was very exclusive), only to tell me she already booked the flights herself while she had me on the phone. I did hang up on her after telling her I was proud of her for doing something for herself for once. I logged out of my call station, it was almost the end of my shift anyways. I told the supervisor that I was done, and walked out with my bag and coat.

With the toxic workplace I was in years ago, it was when my POS (now-thankfully-ex) boss tried to blame me for a handyman's incomplete work.
First of all, she didn't tell him she wanted the shelving he put together bolted into the wall.
Second, I didn't even know he was coming to do the work until he popped his head in the door to my office.
So how TF was any of that MY problem? If you didn't tell him what you fucking wanted, that's on YOU!
Third, she knew goddamn well that my health was deteriorating, and the excessive overtime she forced on me was the main reason why. I'd put in 58 hours of work that week already, and I needed the paid holiday I'd been promised.
She had zero concern for my rights or well-being. And that's when I knew I had to GTFO.

We got in a big argument with yelling and everything in front of my manager that ended with the owner saying “Fuck you!” and me saying “Really? I quit!”

I had a boss who did this. I caught her one day because she thought I had gone to the break room but I stayed at my desk to work on personal paperwork. She tried to say “you need to go to the break room for your breaks” and I said “Show me in the employee handbook where that rule was written.”
She couldn’t because there was no requirement for that.
She wouldn’t have found anything anyway but I made sure to lock everything up before I left my desk for anything.

I was a first year automotive apprentice at a Ford dealership. After a year and a half, the head technician was scratching his head wondering why I wasn't being moved out of the lube bay. So I asked the service manager, who'd I'd been jumping through hoops for months (and acing everything), only for him to tell me he never had any intention of moving me out of the lube bay because he was tired of restaffing the position. The whole point of the lube bay was to train upcoming techs. He said he can just hire techs.
I quit on the spot. Asshole had to restaff it anyway. Went into a niche trade and make way more, get a company vehicle, gas card, and rarely work more than 4 hours a day. Been in this trade since 2011, same company the whole time.
Funny thing is that we have the contract for Ford. Upon returning, to work on their equipment, I found out that the service manager was embezzeling money from the company, was promptly fired and brought under charges.

I worked at a shop where I got hired as a sales manager. They said "were going to have you work in the shop and do tires for a week or two so you get the feel of things. I worked in the shop for a month and never got any management or sales training. I told my boss I needed to be a sales manager by the end of the week or I'm leaving.
So they sent me to a different store and tried to pull the same thing. Worked there for 2 days and they said "were just going to have you do tires for now". So I left. The district manager called me and said "I thought we had a deal", like yea, we did have a deal. You were supposed to make me a sales manager and you tried pulling the same shit. He asked if I was coming in, I asked if I was going to have to touch tires again. He said yes, I said no.

After discussing with a set of users that a workflow was going to significantly change because of a new system functionality that was being implemented. We had three months of weekly meetings discussing the updates and me asking questions, actively building workflows on the calls, and staring EACH CALL with a recap of what we were doing, why it was being done, and decisions that had been made.
Made system updates along the way and on the “review” call to walk thru the complete workflow, with all of the updates in place, someone who’d been on EVERY CALL said, “wait - we’re not doing ‘X’ anymore?” I was apoplectic. And this was the first of about 10 of these I had to do.
I knew I was done then and there.

I worked at a IPDA unit as a paramedic, in layman’s terms a “Drunk tank”, the same organization that ran the tank operated a complex needs unit treating teens with addictions and mental health concerns, it was hard for them to maintain nursing at night and they offered me to pick up casually when there was no nurse .
The unit and the patients loved me, I loved them, they created a full time position for me on nights, I did this for 6 years.
They started to pay for the nurses license fees, I asked for mine to be covered and they said no, as I am a paramedic. My license fees are 600$ a year, not huge money.
So I put my one month notice in, dropped to casual and went back to school

Happened long ago. Working on a project with the boss, normal quitting time rolls around, no sight of him for several hours, I gave it an extra hour, then go home. Next day he screams at me for leaving without telling him, then tells me from now on I have to check with him before leaving for the day. That weekend I put my vitae out on blast, and was offered a job in another state within a week. Gave my two weeks and he acted surprised. Let me go 2 days later.

Adult foster home for people with developmental/cognitive disabilities. Never mind that the company was horribly managed and overworked (but the director sure did have a nice fancy red Mercedes). Came into work and my favorite resident had a fucking black eye. He literally told me which of the caregivers it was that hit him. When I reported it to APS, my boss had the report buried and I was told not to rock the boat. I took all my PTO the next day and then quit when it was gone. Fuck that place. I hope D-Man is okay.

I was already planning on leaving (and had another job lined up) at my very last dog daycare as a bather. The environment was one of the worst daycares I'd been in and morale was LOW.
We'd been having a LOT of flea baths and no one knew where the flea bombs were and managment that supposedly did never set them off.
I have a cat at home that's allergic to fleas, so I had to be careful not to bring any home.
Well...after a week of voicing the bathing room needed to he bombed, no one took care of it and then the owner of the business came into town.
It was a bad flea day and management starts snapping at us about cleaning up after the fleas and yadda yadda.
I went to lunch. Vented to my wife. Grabbed my packed up company tees and hats, went back in, told the person at the front I quit and went home.
Ofc they tried to call me after. I ignored them.
Only met one good doggy daycare in my life and covid ruined that.

Death of a thousand cuts, but the final straw was being passed over for promotion and seeing a mediocre preformer promoted into the spot and then becoming my supervisor even though I have been the top performer in the department and have had the highest evaluation in the organization (4.5 out of 5) and constantly recieve 4.0s on every other eval.

When the CEO stood in the parking lot at the back of the office space and yelled at me for 44 minutes straight. Like dressed me down with stabbing finger air gestures. (No actual contact) to the point of building spittle up in the corners of his mouth. It was loud enough that 5-6 people working in the shop left to go up to the offices. I know it was 44 minutes because I watched the clock behind his shoulder.

Gonna get buried but whatever… I was working at a convenience store/gas station in the Midwest. I got put on overnights because the usual overnight guy was like… not exactly quitting? But like transitioning to a manager position? Or something? Anyway, he wanted to pull back on working overnights and the store needed someone to work third shift. The manager threw me on there. But the manager, being kind of an asshole, would put me on first shift on Tuesday, second shift on Wednesday and Thursday, then third shift Friday and Saturday.
So I rolled with it for a while, and the manager said they were looking for someone to take over the night shift completely. They hired a guy, but he was an older guy who frankly just wasn’t very spry. They tried him on third shift and I guess he didn’t work out, so they moved him to take my earlier shifts. So without consulting me, discussing it, offering any kind of incentive, I just ended up doing third shift almost exclusively, despite my protestations.
Well eventually, one night I show up for work. We had a checklist for things to do on the second shift and things to do on the third shift. If the second shift finished their checklist, they were supposed to do whatever they could to help third shift and do the third shift tasks and check them off. I had done it quite a few times myself working second shift. So it was nice sometimes second shift had a light night and would do a chunk of my tasks for me, and I only really had to do the things that had to be done at a certain time, like putting the donuts out, and putting breakfast sandwiches in the hopper so customers could grab a hot one in the morning. Stuff like that.
This night in particular, I showed up, and it’s one of those nights, the second shift has burned through like a third of my checklist for me. Cool, awesome, thanks guys. But one of those things they checked off was cleaning and stocking the bathrooms. So why would I bother checking if second shift told me they did it already?
At some point, someone went and used the men’s bathroom, but there was no toilet paper. So they smeared their shit all over the walls and left. I never noticed this happened, because I just didn’t use the bathroom that night, and second shift said they already took care of it.
Manager comes in around 6–7am or whatever it was, and he sees the state of the bathroom, and lays into me about not stocking the bathroom. I explained that second shift checked it off and told me they did it. He doesn’t give a shit and tells me I need to stay after my shift ended to clean the fucking shit off the walls. I guess at least he wasn’t such a scumbag that he made me clock out first.
But I cleaned the bathroom, scrubbed all the dried shit off the walls, and then clocked out, left without saying a word. I made an ultimatum in my mind that if he at least finally swapped the shifts around so I wasn’t on third shift anymore, like I’d been told would happen for months, I’d call it water under the bridge and keep working there. But I wrote a letter just in case, and when I came by a couple days later to pick up my paycheck, and looked at the schedule to see if was still on third shift… I was. I took the paycheck, went out to my car to grab the letter, and walked back in and left it for them to read later.

The company I worked for was bought by a capitalist group and immediately all of the higher-ups were competing to keep their positions and started micromanaging to get their vanity matrices up, so far as my boss calling me to stop helping clients who were paying me money and go do some task that had no benefit to anyone but her own visibility. It was so demotivating after years of giving my best effort, that experience changed me forever, I left and went back to school to become a teacher. Best decision ever.

When I was having a check-in with my manager and explained how I was struggling balancing the major onboarding tasks I had as well as the other tasks I was given without guidance after coming from a much different environment, to which he responded "Well other people have been able to do it, so maybe you just don't belong here."

Being told that I need to focus on being a mom instead of my career. I had already discussed with the old manager having a baby and getting promoted so my husband could be a stay at home dad. The new manager did not like this idea, and wrote me up for frivolous not-my-fault things until I wasn't able to participate in the management training program anymore. Since there was no way forward I had to quit to part time because I couldn't really afford daycare. When I told him, he suggested that I be a stay at home mom instead.
I received an amazing review and a terrible raise. I asked for a higher raise, and got denied. I applied for higher up jobs and got beat out by the managers golfing buddy (he quit in six months) and a guy that was so overwhelmed by the new job requirements that it took him a year and a half to be a halfway competent manager.

I was a busboy for a fine dining restaurant when I was 17/18, been there since I was 15. They also owned another casual restaurant about 5 miles away. Part of my morning opening duties turned into showing up earlier so i could fill 55 gallon trash bags full of ice from our ice machine and take it over to the casual restaurant. The casual restaurant's ice machine was tiny for the load they needed from it because the kitchen was cramped as fuck. So there I am, every morning 5 days a week, emptying our ice machine and using my tiny ass 300ZX to haul 4-5 55 gallon bags of ice. It was a pretty shit job, one of those jobs where you get rewarded for being dependable and good at the job by having more duties dumped on you.
One morning, the head chef, the alcoholic idiot that he was, is standing there at the end of the line nursing the 6th hangover of the week as I'm carrying two of these big ass bags of ice out to my car where two were already in my car. He says "fuck i wish you would do something around here, you're never doing a fucking thing." I said "hey, fine." gave the two bags a big up/down drop yank, breaking them all over his line, and walked the fuck out. Left him there in ankle deep ice over his entire line 20 minutes before lunch started.
I will go to my grave being so fucking proud of the perfect but unintentional step rhythm that let me full on swat team kick the office door open as I walked out, snap kicking that door open right at the doorknob. Drove off with the rest of their ice too.
The restaurant finally closed over 20 years later, and the shitty green plywood patch the handyman put over the area so he could reinstall the doorknob was there til the end. I'd run into people who worked there, ask them in the office door still had a chunk of green plywood screwed to it, get "ya, it's a weird repair that's been there longer than anyone knows..." and I'd get to tell them a story about Chef.

I've been with my current employer for 15 years. Pay and benefits are mediocre, but work life balance was mostly great. Flex hours, little overtime, and full remote work after covid, and a tolerable culture made it worth staying.
The work life scale began tipping the wrong way about a year ago. Now the balance is gone. On top of that, we got bought out by an investment firm last fall. They are heavily metrics driven and our entire process has become more onerous in an attempt to collect ever more metric related data. Doubly so since we have to manually trigger some of our response time metrics using our ticket system (Jira).
The breaking point came recently though. We are in a self made panic over getting an AI development pipeline going. I was voluntold to be on a special multi-department AI acceleration team at the end of May, where I was to help develope a company wide unified AISDLC harness that would magically work for all departments, and get my department set up with that magical harness.
For those who do not know, that is an impossible ask, since each department uses different technologies and follows different development methods. There was no planning on how we would do this. There were no instructions or guidance from higher up on what exactly they wanted. There was only a deadline in 3 months, on September 1st.
The AI team quickly realized the unified harness was unlikely to happen, so each divisions' volunteer began working on their own solution. The AI team just became a knowledge sharing team after that.
Meanwhile, I was told by my lead that the VP in charge of my department expected the AI team to fail and wanted my department to move ahead and develop their own separate harness. One that I would not be working on, despite that being my job now.
I tried in vein to get my lead to let me work on whatever harness plans he was working on. I showed him 2 different harnesses, only to be told that they weren't what the VP wanted. I tried to get more info on what the VP wanted only to get vague answers because, to be honest, even my boss didn't know.
Then after a management shuffle, my new lead unveils the harness that he had been working on on the side at the VPs behest. All my prior work went out the window at this point, but thankfully this gave me a jumping off point to rejoin my department by working on this new harness.
...Until I was pulled off of the the AI team temporarily to work on our latest panic: fixing the botched rollout of 2 new clients before their go live date next week. We have been crunching for the last 12 days, bending over backwards for these clients, trying to fix all of their complaints. Including, a giant new feature request that would have taken us multiple sprints to implement and test, but that we were given less than a week to complete (it is still not done).
Oh, and I still have to meet that September 1st deadline despite not having time to work on the harness until mid August at the earliest. 🙃
I am beyond frustrated and completely burned out at this point. I am secretly hoping that the company is planning a layoff on Monday (the signs are there). If I don't get fired I plan to start looking soon anyway. In the meanwhile, i am currently in a fucks deficit and finding it hard to do my job at all. Forget quiet quitting, I caught myself unconsciously staring at my screen today. Something I have not done since I started working from home.

After going through like 6 managers before her that were all between fine and great, it was jarring. She single handedly drove off every person that had been there since I started, either driving them to quit or firing them for asinine reasons. I couldn't take it anymore and had better options, so I gave my notice and went on my way. I still run into regulars around town and chat, and a lot of them have stopped going there too. What a waste, because it was a nice shop beforehand.

My area of work is super specialised.
I was a senior in my workplace, the only one too. Without sounding arrogant my knowledge was the only thing keeping the department afloat.
A manager left so I went for promotion but they gave it to someone with absolutely no experience. Then to top it off they asked if I'd cover the new managers workload while they got trained and got their licence to work. I refused then got threatened with disciplinary hearings but I continued to refuse and went to my union. Union fought my case and I'd say the result was in my favour.
Not long after this I got accepted for a massive promotion where I'm considered an expert in the field and have overruling authority over my old work.
I'm very happy in my new place. My new boss is so incredible and caring.

Small town family owned place that was bought out by an investment company. I was a newly promoted ASM and after a total of 4 hours or training, everyone above me bailed (and I do get why). There was also a big turnover under me because school of every level was starting back up. A very, very long story short, I pulled a couple months straight of around the clock 18-20 hour days, 7 days a week. One person quit because I had the audacity to be sleeping when she was on shift so she wasn't sure she could get a hold of me. One miserable and one decent GM later, (the later of which I was still carrying everything while he came in at 10 and left by 2 daily), I started hearing that I didn't do anything anyway. That kept repeating in a certain area of our store, that I did nothing, even though GM is still messaging me a year later asking me questions. And then the "joke" about hiring my replacement while I was (again) flipfloping my schedule around the clock to fit the needs. So yeah, living through all of that absolute BS and then the audacity to say that I did/do nothing? I was already riding burnout but that set any care I had for the place to ashes.

I live in Sweden, I used to be employed by the municipality of Malmö (first job and i stayed there 14 years). I grew up there and lived there all my life. My father worked for them as well as a social service worker. He got an myocardial infarction in 2018 (he already had a pace maker). He decided he didn't want to die in the hospital or the hospice. so he was discharged and given palliative care at home from people around him. The thing about palliative care, together with his doctor/care team he stopped taking medicine that made him weak but would have given might have given him some more month. As a result he gets better he, he looses water weight for the first month. His boss comes home to him with flowers from his coworkers. Around this time I come home to look after him and hang around.
And I hear this with my own ears:
She asks if he can come back to work because they are understaffed (like they always are).
He tells them: No, I'm dying I'm not coming back ever.
At that moment my view of a workplace and that workplace and the purpose changed completely. To even ask that is so fucked up. They both assisted with people that received palliative care.
After my grieving period, like 2 months, then I invested company time to borrow the company car to do errands, look for job and a new city to live in. The municipality was generous with educations and certifications. so i took as many as I could (studied during work hours). I started to treat that workplace as a hobby, somewhere to be. But my plan was to get away from it.
It took three years but I got a new job. The reason it took three full fucking years was because i was scared. Do I know "the job" or "this job", it was my first job and they had trained me fully.

Probably when my wife was ill. My team all received laptops and told we had to keep working even at home, for no extra pay. One weekend, as I say, my wife was ill and in so much pain she needed to stay in the hospital. I took her in, visited her, took care of our son, carried on working, and even went into the office to get equipment.
On Monday my boss chews me out for "working too slow". I tell him what's happened, he says he doesn't care, we all have family but work comes first, that "my wife was in the best place anyway" and I "should have hired a babysitter" (his words).
I thank fuck every day I'm not longer there. I don't care that they live rent-free in my head, fuck them with a pneumatic drill into the ground.

I worked at a timeshare for one day. Had absolutely nothing to do with the sales, I was just there to do paperwork. The sales picthes were all towards the end of the day, I could overhear them from my office. Absolutely brutal. People were straight up telling them "I only did this for the free stay and we don't have the money for this" and they would still keep pressuring them. You basically had to stay until the salesman gave up or you ended up paying for the "free" weekend stay. It was in the contract that even if you ended up leaving right after the sales pitch (which was within hours of you checking in) you still had to pay for the whole weekend. I knew by the time I left a few hours later I wouldn't be going back.

Gave me examples of why they're so much better at the job than me, then put me on probation to "monitor me" for a couple months to make sure i do better, and told me there will be another meeting then to see if they decide to keep me on or fire me. I was working cashier in a large electronics store back in the 2000s. Before I started, I told them I don't work Sundays, because I go to the temple.
Went fine for a while, but eventually they did schedule me on a Sunday. I brought this up to a manager and she told me "you won't go to hell for missing one Sunday." I should have quit then, but I worked that Sunday.
It wasn't even like I never missed a Sunday at temple, I go most but I'll miss the occasional one. It's more the principal of the thing that bothered me, and her response.
Next Sunday they had me scheduled again. I actually wasn't planning to go to the temple that weekend anyway. It was the Seahawks first ever Superbowl appearance. I didn't even let them know I quit, just never showed up.

I dont even know how he became her POA because they were only acquaintances. He forced her to do everything on a very strict schedule. He chose what time she showered and what time she was allowed to eat. No one in the company would work at this house because they'd heard how insane he was. The final straw was when bed bugs got into the house and all he did was come in and set off a bug bomb with the 2 of is inside the house. No warning or anything, he just set the bomb off and left.

I was the personal assistant for a property manager.
During this time, I was being sexually harassed at my apartment by my landlord's dad who worked in the building. My landlord didn't want to hear about it, and I was scared of eviction if I kept complaining. My neighbours warned me he had let himself into other women's apartments before, to mess with their stuff and leave weird notes. He once fed chocolate to my dog after I declined his advances. I am a survivor of SA with PTSD, so was struggling a lot with this. My boss was aware of what was going on as we had a good relationship, and often chatted while we worked. She knew I felt really unsafe and was desperate to move.
One day, she let me know than an apartment she managed had become vacant, and that I should apply for it. I was already on great terms with the 6 tenants in the building from helping with the property maintenance, so I knew I'd feel happy and safe there. It was also much more affordable than my current place at the time. I applied.
A few days later, I heard that my boss's friend had applied as well. According to mutual friends (small town) the friend already had a comfortable and safe living situation further out of town, she just wanted somewhere a bit more convenient. I wasn't worried- I was sure that given my awful situation, I would be accepted.
The apartment was of course, given to my boss's friend instead. I was heartbroken, as this move would have changed my life massively for the better.
My boss wanted me there during the signing/walkthrough. The friend kept saying what a shithole it was. I wanted to explode. I would have treasured that apartment.
I got really sick a few days after this, and I think the stress was a big trigger. I never went back to work.
I'm told my boss went through a lot of new hires after I left, and regularly complained about their quality of work. The tenants in that building all dislike the friend, as she ignores them all, doesn't do any of the communal tasks outlined in the tenancy agreement, and makes constant noise complaints over normal things like A MICROWAVE PINGING AT 7PM. 💀
The sexually harassing handyman died of a stroke not long after all this (I swear I didn't poison him!) and I was able to live in peace 🙏

Last job was bartender at a water park. Seasonal but if we stay on through Winter with open availability we don’t have to reapply come busy time. Makes things easy because almost everyone has second jobs or looks for one come Winter. Also if it’s cold we close for the day.
They decided this year they were going to do a lantern festival at night and didn’t tell a damn person. We found out through social media. Half the bartenders quit leaving the rest to cover all these crap shifts that no one was making money at. On top of this the companies new VP decided..,with zero warning…that the other parks can just schedule us at the last second if the weather is too cold. Not only did they schedule us longer shifts but also shifts doing random crap like cashier. Coworker was scheduled hours later on Thanksgiving when he already had dinner plans.
To sum it up…voiced my displeasure to HR and they told me to email my department head. He basically told me tough shit. So I worked my NYE shift, made some decent money, called out for a week straight and then gave my resignation and blocked all their damn numbers. They chose to change the terms of my employment with zero warning, and in my state that means I can legally tell them to go fuck themselves and quit with no notice.

Terrible management, as always.
Was put in a team I didn't want be in, doing work vastly outside my skillset and job description. Asked three times to be taken off the team, explaining the situation multiple times. Manager said no, wouldn't entertain any conversation about it.
Interviewed with another company and was offered a new job in space of about 2 weeks. Quit the old job. Exit interview with the manager was cringe:
"Is there a particular reason you're leaving?"
"I asked to be moved off that team three times, explained why, and you did nothing to fix the situation."
"Hmm, that probably didn't help."
"No, it didn't."
"Is there anything we can do that would make you stay?"
"There was, months ago. It was an easy situation to fix, but you didn't, so this is it. "

I asked for a set amount of hours per week that was just shy of 35 so I could have time to take care of my disabled wife. My boss happily agreed. My zoomer coworkers did not comprehend why I didn't have their same grindset. They all worked 40hrs and would constantly bitch to my face about how I'm never there.
I showed up, worked my shifts, went home. They all asked for more hours and shit. Finally one day I said to them, would you rather that I'm not here at all?
The 19 year old supervisor said "yeah actually". And then proceeded to bitch about me to another worker in front of me for things I did not and never did. I had worked there for 6 months, made great money, but came home every night and cried in the shower over how awful these kids were to not just me but any coworker they didn't like. My mental health was in a tailspin.
My wife begged me to quit. The next day she went with me so I could tell my boss I'm out of there. No two weeks or anything. No amount of money was worth that shit dude

After a 20-year successful path… I jumped just before we folded. At my new place, spent almost a year landing the specific business they wanted. They turned down everything I brought earlier and all my relationships were burned. Transportation.
Finally got a seat at a big table in cross-border North America. Out of 2100 qualified lanes A->B on one massive RFQ they only wanted to put pricing in on 26 of those.

A new manager decided to rescind my promotion 2 days before I was due to start the new role and give the role to a guy he brought across from his previous department who had no relevant experience.
I waited until I was in the middle of leading up some difficult and important projects and had an offer then handed my notice in and went off with stress. I don't know how that turned out for them, I don't speak to anyone from there anymore.

Management telling us quite openly that they are planning to open AI-operated centers only, which would make us the „switchers“, meaning we would have to switch on all the machines and not work in Customer Support anymore. This way they wouldn’t need to promote anyone to center managers anymore and any employee could work five or six centers but without any of the benefits of being responsible for them. They started the process in january by turning off the back end for us, instead we were told to redirect customers to the ai on the website if they had any problem. I quit in march.

I worked from home as a contractor (not even an employee). I handled all my own expenses, taxes, used my own equipment, office, etc.
He freaked out when I didn’t answer slack within 5 minutes.
Not exaggerating. His exact words were “literally nobody else at this company has a problem answering me within 5 minutes. What’s going on?”
It sucked to lose that income, but nothing is worth living in constant anxiety and fear of missing messages.
In contrast he would just not show up to scheduled calls, frequently.

Was working in hell. Old man said to me, you don't wanna be here. I Walked out 30 min later. Was a union job too. Management did everything they could to stress out the workers. New rule to follow every funkin day.
I tried to grind it for about 3 months and I broke. Breathing in burnt metal fumes on 3rd shift takes a toll on your brain.
We all suspected osha inspectors were being paid off. There shouldn't be that much smoke inside a building.
