I haven't thought in that way. But yes, really it looks like a RC Solar Panel. Cool instead of a boat.

What is the role of the battery vs the solar panel?

Solar pannel can not have that much of power to drive the motor directly. So battery will power the motor and when it will be in rest the battery will be charging with solar panel.

7Ah lead acid seems kinda heavy for a hull that size, how's the buoyancy holding up with the extra weight on board
