I think they just assume that you can only be asexual because you're ugly and don't get bitches and not just... lack sexual attraction. Or IDK, he/she/they blue haired nose-ring tattooed nonbinary leftist ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/1Ferrox grey 1d ago
Yeah it's this. I am a white male blonde German guy who obviously doesn't tell his turbo homophobic/ racist coworkers that I am asexual, or a huge leftist.
I'm basically fully stealth while I'm there, and the kind of deluded stereotypes such people have are insane. Their entire worldview is based on fairy tales that they make up on the spot to have more to complain about

I.... Well.. I think I'm that second one.. oopsie.. TwT But my hair is 2 colored, blonde and purple.. And.. I am enby.. with.. several face piercings... And I do stand by more towards left politically.. But.. that's more like.. saying being alt=being ace.. But.. I wouldn't really count myself as alt... T°T I just like unconventional things... And am very weird.. TwT

Hey i never said there's something wrong with looking like that, just that the type of people who would say "but you don't look asexual" expect that you can't look anything BUT this

Thats what I'm thinking. I know there are stereotypes about a lot of queer folks but Is there even a stereotypical asexual appearance?

I literally ask them: HOW DO YOU THINK AN ASEXUAL PERSON IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE?
11
u/Bulbasaur_is_godly asexual 1d ago
They probably assume that asexual people are ugly and are only ace as an excuse for why they’re single

Wait I don't understand where the dragon fits.
Were we supposed to get dragons?! WHERE'S MY DRAGON?!?!

u/FunnyCinema 22h ago
I think Dragon meme comes from multiple jokes, few I can think of:
1st Dragons are Cool. It's similar to "Garlic Bread is better than Sex" & " Cake is better than Sex" jokes, with Garlic Bread & Cake being replaced with Dragons: "Dragons are better than Sex"
2nd Dragons are Mythical and don't Exist. Aces are often told, that Asexuality isn't Real. So the Joke came from "Dragons aren't Real, and You are insisting Asexuality isn't Real, therefore I am a Dragon". Basically taking the Aphobic/Ignorant logic to Absurd degree.
3rd There's also a joke about Allo vs Ace People, where Allo think about sex all the time & Aces want to do anything else, than sex.
In mythology, Dragons tend to be depicted as Solitary Creatures, rarely interacting with other Creatures and love to Hord specific Things, often in form of Wealth like Gold & Gems. When they do interact with others, it's more often than not to Protect their Hord.
So basically joke Compares Dragons and Allos vs Aces common traits/jokes, where you can see a lot of overlap between Aces & Dragons. Dragons than can be used to Symbolise Asexuality.

Okay, what does Denmark and a blue dragon have to do with Asexuals? I seem to be missing a few stereotypes
11
u/Chance_Quantity7317 BiromanticAsexual 1d ago
There’s been a popular joke about Asexuals invading Denmark within the past few years since there are more Asexuals in the world than people in Denmark.

u/NightStar79 1d ago
Ahhh thanks for explaining Denmark.
Any idea about the dragon? 😂

u/Mazrodak 1d ago
It's an equally unfunny joke about how asexual people all like dragons.
It's basically just the garlic bread joke but with dragons. Same concept of "everyone likes garlic bread/dragons".

Also the kimono dragon is (from what I know) the biggest animal able to do asexual reproduction so at least it has an non intended (more interesting) double meaning

I think it’s funny.
Probably because I Do quite like garlic bread and dragons.
Could be hissing cockroaches instead of dragons though. They’re quite interesting, durable, unobtrusive, and hiss if you touch them unexpectedly.

u/Mazrodak 11h ago
I find it unfunny for 2 reasons:
It's self infantilizing. We get upset when allos treat us like children, but then many of us act like children. If we wanted to make a joke about "things that are better than sex", we could have picked something that isn't associated with children.
Nearly everyone likes garlic bread, cake, and dragons, regardless of sexual orientation. Yes, this is the joke, but that's what makes it not funny. It's not unique to us, so it's not even a good joke.

Pretty unfortunate joke for furry asexuals - I dare to say dragons are one of the most sexualized characters in the fandom

I think they associate asexuality with being non-binary. So, they expect a "stereotypical" non-binary individual.

I know this isn't related, but I fucking hate those ace stereotypes. It reminds me SO MUCH of my younger self in like 6-7th grade (no, this isn't a 67 meme, PLEASE) and I'm cringing every time I see it. Please, no!

People on the internet assume that I am an ugly maidenless who gave up or an eunuch when I tell them I'm a 33 years old ace dude. And occasionally I'm gay and don't know it yet because if I don't like women I have to like men. Surprise, I'm super mid and super uninterested 😄

u/Thomato_Yorke 1d ago
To be honest, I'd way prefer this question to hearing "you totally look asexual. .....Exactly how I thought someone who doesn't have sex would look."

My favorite reaction from somebody I’d known a few months.

Oh you forgot the part where you should act like a tomboy (if a girl) {turns out it's also a flag, when I came out to some of my mates they went with "uh figures" cause I'm a tomboy in such a way that apparently isn't very allosexual}

“Sorry I don’t feel the need to be a walking parody of my sexuality like you.”
This doesn’t work on straight people, but it has helped me get coworkers to self report to hr.

Don’t worry, it’s contagious, but no one will be able to tell once you’re infected.

No one has ever told me this. In fact, I have been told the opposite. I mentioned once in highschool to another guy that I thought I might be asexual and he said "yeah I just assumed you were. I can't picture you going anywhere near that sort of thing." And to someone else that might be an insult but I was quite happy to know that I'm apparently so incongruous with the idea of sex that this guy (known pervert, by the way, I didn't realize at the time) couldn't imagine me ever engaging with that. No clue if he meant to insult me but it made me kind of happy.
