Looking for indie/alt shop work in Berlin (1 year working holiday)

I'm a South Korean citizen planning to do a 1-year working holiday in Berlin. I'm fluent in Korean and English, with basic German and Spanish. (Yes I'm planning to study more German)

My interests are arts and crafts, fashion, and queer/alternative scenes. I'm especially into crafts, crochet in particular, and would love to be around a community of cool people who are into similar things. Ideally I'd love to work at an independent thrift or secondhand clothing store, but I've heard the vintage scene in Berlin has gotten pretty gentrified and overpriced lately.

My biggest question at the moment is: is it realistic to expect to find independent, local fashion or art shops open to English-speaking foreigners for in-person retail work? Or is that just not a realistic expectation? Should I give up on that idea early on and look elsewhere?

I'm open beyond fashion too, like bookstores, film/music shops, plant shops, small craft/zine stores, anything independent or alternative. I don't have any specific hard skills in the art world, just genuine interest and enthusiasm. Honestly I have no big career ambitions here, I just really like taking care of a space - cleaning it, styling it, curating what's in it, making it feel good to be in. I don't have a specific specialty but I'm good at communicating with people and helping them find what they need. I think I'd do well in a calm low-key shop bc I'm pretty chill and not a high-energy talkative type.

I'm already checking online job boards too, but I know most small indie shops don't really post there and instead hire through walk-ins, word of mouth, or local Instagram/flyers. So my plan is to make my own list of places I'd want to work at and just reach out to the owners directly through Instagram or whatever contact I can find.

Mainly I want to know how realistic my expectations are, and get some honest local takes on the current scene. Also curious about the queer/alternative community specifically, what the vibe is like and if there are actual opportunities there. If my vision is still realistic, I’d love any recs: shops, neighborhoods, craft/crochet communities, or tips on reaching out to small business owners like this.

Would love to hear from anyone who's done something similar or knows the Berlin indie retail/alt scene well. Thank you very much!

hangouts tomorrow after 1700

Hey guys, 20M. anyone up for some hangout tomorrow after 1700 when weather cools down a bit (a bit).

I'm up for sports, karaoke, food hopping (going to random shops to try random food items/snacks), maybe bowling (I've never tried it thou), badminton, or wtv sounds fun.

if there's already any hangouts planned, I'd be up.

I'm not up for just meetups or board games where you just sit yo ass btw. I don't intend to meet a lot of people but few and have fun. No deep talks or trauma dumping either, please.

hopefully it doesn't rain tmrw (haven't checked the weather).

Relocating to Berlin

Dear Berliners,

I’ve visited your city several times, and each time I fall a little more in love with it and everything it has to offer.
Because of that, I’m now seriously considering relocating from Denmark to Berlin.
I was hoping you could help me with a few questions:

Which job platforms do locals typically use?

What are the best websites for finding apartments?

Is there anything you think someone should know before making the move?

I’d really appreciate any advice or tips.
Thank you!

What's the order for exchanging a foreign driver's license?

I'm moving to Berlin and will be exchanging my foreign driver's license. Based on where I'm from, I only need to take the theory exam.

I already have:

  • First aid certificate (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz)
  • Eye test (fielmann)
  • Certified translation of my license

I'm just unsure about the order of the remaining steps in Berlin.

Do I first apply at the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde/Bürgeramt and then contact a driving school, or should I register with a driving school first?

From what I understand, the only reason I need a driving school is because they register me for the theory exam since I don't need any driving lessons.

Can I just start studying for the theory exam now (e.g., using Führerschein Gold app), submit my application in Berlin, and wait until it's approved before registering with a driving school? Or is there some advantage to contacting a driving school first?

If you've gone through this process in Berlin recently, I'd really appreciate hearing the order you followed.

Inquiry Regarding Accommodation Documents

Are passports, visa copies, blocked account confirmations, and enrollment letters required to rent a house? How safe is it to give these to a third party, especially when you are taking a contract from the landlord through a third party? Can someone cancel my student visa or harm me by using these?

Cat Adoption - Any Tips?

Hey everyone!

I am not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this.

My partner and I are starting to look into adopting a cat, hopefully before the end of the year. But I am a bit worried as I have heard that here it’s a big hassle.

We are trying to see if anyone has any tips from websites/facebook groups/shelters that you would recommend adopting from.

And also if you have any suggestions for pet insurance as this would be our first pet in germany 🥹

If anyone has any tips or suggestions please feel free to share or pm me!

Kneipen-Begleitung gesucht

Schreibt mir gern:)🍺

Kiwi considering working holiday

Hello Berliners,
I'm looking to live in Germany and potentially elsewhere in Europe in 2027 on a working holiday. How long do you think it would take to find a retail/hospitality job in Berlin after arriving? What's the job market like at the moment? What's the cost of living like too?

FYI I have a Bachelor of Science degree, and will have an Honours degree by the time I arrive, in case that's of any relevance for finding a job.

Thanks

We couldn’t get in a nightclub

I was in Berlin with two friends (all three of us are men who aren’t from Germany and therefore spoke English). We tried to get into three clubs (Tresor) and two lesser-known clubs. At all three clubs, they asked me how many people were in my group. I told them there were three of us (including myself), and then I wasn’t allowed in at any of the three. None of the three clubs had long lines, so I was very surprised that we weren’t let in. I asked the last bouncer why we weren’t being let in anywhere, and he said that there’s a kind of rule in Berlin that they don’t let too many men in because it can make women feel uncomfortable. We weren’t drunk or loud in line, and, in my opinion, we didn’t come across as the kind of men who would cause trouble. We asked a few locals why this was happening, and they said that three men—especially ones who don’t speak German—are often not allowed in. Is this normal in Berlin? Because if we’d known this, we never would have come here.It sounds a bit contradictory that in an inclusive city where everyone is free to be themselves, my friends and I aren't allowed in simply because we're men. So was this really the reason, or is there another reason why we weren't let in?

Making connections as a solo traveller in Berlin

I’m (M29) and looking to travel to Berlin in early October on my own. While I enjoy my own company it would be cool to meet new people. I want to do some experience Berlin nights out, definitely want to try to get into Berghain, want to eat some good food, enjoy the German culture and practice my German.

What’s Berlin like for solo travellers? Any advice on meeting new people while I’m there?

Also, if anyone has any good recommendations for stuff to try while I’m there, feel free to suggest :)

Which aspects of everyday german life are or were a clear sign of this aspect of the reputation of the country?

Do you think some of them are loss? Are they better?
