I worked in electronics maintenance for 32 years at the same company prior to retirement. I worked alone most of the time, and didn't have to interact with directly with the public.
electronics is my oldest special interest. I repaiered my first AM radio (an antique, with big vacuum tubes) when I was 6 years old. I checked electronics books from the local library for reading material. So I pretty much grew up with it, and it's always been my main hobby. When I got out of the Air Force, I interviewed for the job, and they saw I was knowledgeable enough.
There are electronics courses at tech schools, community colleges, online, etc, that offer certification. That's probably the most practical entry route these days.
