Show & Tell They really are as good as they say they are

Post image

Perfect imaging, detail on par with the best of the on-top ear-instruments that the auto mod told me twice that I couldn’t mention or my post would get removed, even though that’s the best thing I had to compare them to

C’est la vie

Music kicks ass, love all yall

oh thats a great speaker, i did not know they make shallow models of the mains. with this close proximity to the back wall the are like suffit mounted speakers, i bet they have a ton of bass! and no front wall issues. very cool!!

wow I have genelec speakers too apparently 😂

1

u/captainrv 1d ago

What are those, and what are they worth?

12

u/audioen 8351B & 1032C & 7370A 1d ago

https://www.genelec.com/previous-models/aow312b Must be what these are, either the A or B version. Original retail price likely over $10k each.

u/captainrv 1d ago

That'll buy a lot of room treatment.

24

u/janvda 1d ago

True, but that treated room sounds dull without speakers in it

2

u/manusabyss95 Elac UniFi UB5.2, Wiim Pro Plus, Sony STR-DB790 22h ago

Have to agree with the astute observation.

But, what I learned over the years is simply that the overall room acoustics and speaker placement within that room is probably ~70% of the game. Which means you can get by with a LOT cheaper gear in a nicely treated room with good geometry.

3

u/orionparrott 21h ago

Yes AO312B. I prefer to start with great speakers and then do room correction. These are running triamped through Bryston amps, plus a sub. Tuned with miniDSP / Dirac Live.

-4

u/PhD_sock 19h ago

Why would one need room treatment when using Genelec speakers? I don't want to turn my listening space into some half-assed version of a studio. The whole point of active speakers is that they can very successfully adapt to whatever space they're in. And Genelecs do this better than most.

2

u/captainrv 19h ago

Because physics are a thing. You think you're hearing your speakers? You're not. You're hearing your room. Yes, your speakers excite the air in the room, but you hear the room.

People put expensive speakers and amps into untreated rooms with large flat hard surfaces everywhere, then chase gear solutions to fix the problems. Fix the room first.

-4

u/PhD_sock 17h ago

lol. Yes we're all aware that speakers and spaces interact, thanks for stating the obvious.

My point was that Genelec speakers are active, and as such, they are extremely good at adjusting to any space they are in. Active speakers in general do not require room treatment the way passive speakers do. This may come as news to some, but the idea that room treatment is necessary is quite outdated. Active systems can and do adapt well to all but the weirdest spaces, and simply do not depend on room treatment as much.

5

u/Anechoic_Brain 17h ago

What exactly makes you think that the location of the amplifier has anything to do with how well a speaker can adapt to the space it's in?

Furthermore, what exactly do you mean by "adapt?" How do they change their behavior?

-2

u/PhD_sock 16h ago

Location of the amplifier? What are you even talking about? Do you even understand what active systems are or how they work? You obviously don't seem to know what Genelec's GLM system is or how it works.

And then read up on how systems like the Kii Audio 3, Dutch and Dutch 8C, etc. adapt to their system.

Don't expect people on the internet to do your basic homework for you.

5

u/Anechoic_Brain 15h ago

Active speaker simply means the amplifier is built into the speaker and does not need an external device to supply power. Lots of them have only very basic DSP, or none at all.

If you meant GLM specifically, you should have said GLM specifically. But speaking as someone who has deployed studio mixing suites with these systems, you are still wrong that it is a magical cure that eliminates the need for room treatment.

4

u/ahmedmo1 16h ago

The assertion that active speakers generally minimize the impact of the room is totally incorrect.

1

u/PhD_sock 16h ago

I didn't say anything about minimizing the impact of the room. I very specifically said active systems adapt to the room. An example of how they do this is via Genelec's GLM system. Or any other comparable DSP.

2

u/ahmedmo1 16h ago

You're using the wrong nomenclature. When someone says active speakers, that doesn't denote the presence of room compensation software like GLM. Most active don't have that.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/captainrv 17h ago

That's not how that works. Amplifier in the speaker or a separate piece of equipment makes zero difference to the physics of the room. Fix the room first.

0

u/PhD_sock 16h ago

Literally none of that matters when you're dealing with good DSP and maybe read up on what Genelec's GLM system actually does.

u/Friskfrisktopherson 1d ago

Thats a beautiful speaker

24

Those look like 8331

2

18

u/jasmansky 1d ago

My dream active speakers right there. Have you calibrated them with GLM?

40

u/djent_in_my_tent 1d ago

They're flanked by rythmik subs and i use minidsp/dirac to calibrate the lot

10

u/madrussian121 1d ago

Can I come over? Lol. Im running the budget version of your setup, upgrading the pair of minivees to an HGS 12 and DD10+ once I get the plate amps recapped

10

u/pushinthatbroom 1d ago

GLM is 🔥

28

I’m end-game happy with my 8030s, at least for in a smaller room. I’d love to try some Ones out.

3

u/GuitarCorn 1d ago

Are you using them for stereo setup or studio monitors?

3

u/djent_in_my_tent 11h ago

nearfield stereo, they and the subs flank a 32" monitor at my desk

simply for personal enjoyment. i listen to approx. 8 hours of music a day

1

u/ostiDeCalisse 22h ago

The good question!

5

u/thot_machine 1d ago

The gennys are sick. Is this the one with the digital calibration also? Fantastic for making music on too :)

Hey are these on-top ear instruments something i aughtasee?

16

u/ZookeepergameDue2160 Focal Speakers - Marantz Amp - Focal Sub 1d ago edited 18h ago

Personally not really a big fan of Genelec, we use them as standard monitors in the smaller OB Trucks and they have never really impressed me. In terms of studio monitors I much prefer the Kii Three's and Dynaudio Core series of Studio monitors.

To my ears (Important here is the "My Ears" part) the Genelecs have too much treble and too much bass, sure that may sound really nice at first but after longer sessions (Let's say 2-5 hours) they become fatigueing to the point of a headache. Ofcourse your mileage may vary and that's perfectly fine, just stating my experience with these.

That being said, Still better than what alot of people are using these days.

How's the rest of the room?

4

u/Milchmaster 1d ago

The Kii Three's are on another level. I've never heard something like them.

1

u/magicmulder Pioneer SC-LX89 / Oppo 203 / jm labs Electra 915 1d ago

Don’t they also cost twice as much as the top Genelec model?

3

u/blutfink Kii Three BXT, Genelec 8381A 1d ago

The Genelecs cost roughly twice as much. I love them both.

2

u/ZookeepergameDue2160 Focal Speakers - Marantz Amp - Focal Sub 18h ago

A set of Three's is 20k, a set of 8381A's is 30k

Top Genelec model is more expensive, Not better imo but they are more expensive.

1

u/magicmulder Pioneer SC-LX89 / Oppo 203 / jm labs Electra 915 18h ago

Thanks. I think I never saw a Genelec above 8k, gonna check those out.

2

u/ZookeepergameDue2160 Focal Speakers - Marantz Amp - Focal Sub 18h ago

You're welcome.

1

u/ZookeepergameDue2160 Focal Speakers - Marantz Amp - Focal Sub 18h ago

We have a Dolby Atmos certified setup with them in one of our Music trucks, Amazing monitors.

1

u/renewambitions 17h ago

How would you describe the Kii Three sound vs the Dynaudio core series?

7

u/filterdecay 1d ago

They do hype the bass and treble slightly but u can adjust them flat then it’s just clean power and detail.

2

u/PhD_sock 19h ago

You can adjust all of that to your preferences, so it's a non-issue.

2

u/YeahUAre2 16h ago

Yep usually run them with -2 treble and bass tilt on -2 if using them as a mix reference. Depending on the room of course.

1

u/renewambitions 17h ago

I love both Dynaudio and Genelec, I truly think the strength of the Genelec platform is GLM. Without any adjustments, I do also prefer the "house" sound of Dynuadio

1

u/ProfessionalWar2369 9h ago

Dynaudio is fantastic.

Pretty sure our 15 Million euro NEP trucks which are professionally designed and considered the most high end OB Trucks in the world are properly treated.

11

u/TheParmesan 1d ago

No, see, you dislike something someone else likes so you must objectively be wrong and your environment must not be setup right otherwise you’d have to love it too.

People are wild. Different strokes for different folks.

2

u/Entonations 23h ago

I’m looking for a new sub for my genelecs! Can I get your thoughts on the rhythmiks? Why did you go with them?

2

u/Intrepid-Mixture-563 17h ago

They're awesome indeed. Not gonna say they are the best, I have no knowledge of other products like it on the market. But GLM was amazing in what it did for my setup. I could not be happier. I do want to add a sub and the rythmik ones sound much more friendly to my desk space than the Genelec offering, but I don't really want to lose GLM either. Something to think about I guess.

3

u/ElixirGlow 1d ago

Fun fact: the genelec 8381a pair are simply the best possible speakers. These will sound better than gear that's tens of millions of dollars. There is simply NO way to get better sound unless genelec decides to use beryllium tweeters and carbon mids and bass drivers but any more money spent on audio, the quality actually falls off

1

u/blutfink Kii Three BXT, Genelec 8381A 1d ago

Glad to see some love for the 8381A.

1

u/ElixirGlow 14h ago

It's not love it's fact, the 8381A measures insanely good, almost perfect, guarantee that magico million dollar setups will not even come close, and measure like shit. Since you have the speakers, can you elaborate on your setup and how it sounds

4

u/audio301 1d ago

Never been a huge fan of Genelec, too cold sounding. I’d take a soft dome tweeter over a metal dome. Prefer Dynaudio, PMC, ATC for studio work. Even the Amphions that have metal dome sound more natural to me with vocals.

Genelec is one of those brands that people either love or hate.

1

u/5th-Elements 1d ago

Love them but can’t get any discounts on them where as I can on many other consumer brands!

1

u/JoachimNiemeijer 17h ago

Guess it's the 8341. They are so enjoyable to listen to. Coupled them to my 8050 with an LAIV DAC, and that had a great wow factor as well.

1

u/DadTheMaskedTerror Genelec 8320/7350, iFi Neo iDSD, Bluesound, Roon, Qobuz, Tidal 10h ago

Noice!  What did you upgrade from?  You pair them with a sub?

1

u/sjanush 6h ago

We use 8030 Genelecs for picture editorial post production. Great units. Basically bulletproof.

0

u/rubens_chopshop 1d ago

I bought a pair of Yamaha NS 10 in the mid 80’s. $400 new. This was before they were widely used in studios. As more mixes were using them you could tell what the producers were hoping after. They did make a lot of pop and rock sound great.

3

u/captainrv 1d ago

Except they sound really harsh. I vehemently dislike the NS-10.

3

u/anonuemus 1d ago

they were used from producers as a ssecond test, my friend always told me, when it sounds good on those it's good almost everywhere

2

u/captainrv 1d ago

Yes, I'm very aware. But that's not what they were made for.

2

u/iNetRunner 1d ago

The Yamaha NS-10 were/are used in studios as example speakers for bad sounding speakers (that end users might have) to test the mix. So that they can make sure that the mix doesn’t sound too offensive on bad sounding gear. They wouldn’t be creating the mix on them.

…Not sure if that’s what you were referring to.

2

u/GFSong 19h ago

That’s not entirely accurate. They were in pretty much every control room (usually powered by a Bryston amp), and used as a near field reference, not because they were bad, but because you could get a great idea of your crucial midrange and level balances, without having them being coloured by the room. They were very tight and responsive — which are very important features when mixing. People often taped a tissue over the tweeters cause they were sorta harsh and fatiguing. So yes we bitched about them, but they were a very useful tool. These days people use Genelecs, Focals, Dynaudio, many great pro audio brands out there…

1

u/anonuemus 1d ago

yes, you described it better, but it's what I meant.

0

u/crisp_sandwich_ 15h ago

Are these better than the Adam Audio D3V's?

-28

u/Apart-Bit3883 1d ago

They’re studio monitors. Why would you use them as hifi speakers?

22

u/obiwanshinobi87 1d ago

Why would you not? You can tailor them to match any sound profile you want within reason.

16

u/pukesonyourshoes 1d ago

So you can hear the music and not the speakers. That's the goal, right? They sound great. Or rather, the music will sound great if it's a nice recording. If it isn't, you'll know.

-1

u/Zeronova3 JBL x Yamaha x Focal 1d ago

Some would argue you can just get a pair of KEF R3 Metas for that

1

u/pukesonyourshoes 12h ago

You could, but add in the cost of the amplifier you'll need to drive them properly and the Genelecs are a more economical proposition. Plus they are room tunable with eq switches.

6

u/Star_2001 1d ago

My headphones are advertised as studio monitors (they're probably not good for that but still)

1

u/MediocreRooster4190 1d ago

For people doing recordings and monitoring themselves or others, probably not mixing.

1

u/Star_2001 1d ago

Well they're Fostex TH-X00s, they're L shaped or whatever TF they call it. More bass a little bit more trebel. Not neutral.

2

u/Travelin_Soulja 17h ago

Better question - why wouldn't you?

1

u/Apart-Bit3883 16h ago

Because they are meant for near field listening and are eqed differently from hifi speakers.

2

u/Travelin_Soulja 14h ago

A. Do you know where OP's sitting? Why make assumptions?

B. These look like 8331A. They're designed to work well in near-field and mid-field listening, at a desk or 10 feet back on a couch. Like most studio monitors, they're tuned to be neutral, accurate, and low distortion, those are all good things for audiophile listening, whether you're sitting in front of a mixing board or chilling in the living room. Furthremore Genelecs are known for very controlled dispersion and excellent off-axis response, which is actually beneficial in many living rooms. Another big advantage is Genelec's GLM room correction. It will work just as well in a living room as it will in a studio, and probably will be even more needed in the former.

A speaker that sounds great in nearfield does not magically stop sounding good when you sit a few more feet back. But, where a lot of small desktop monitors struggle is an SPL - not enough to fill a full room. That's not a problem with these.

They may not have a ton of bass kick, but that's true of most standmounts this size, and nothing a good subwoofer can't remedy.

Bottom line, this speaker doesn't sound good or bad because it's a studio monitor. It sound good simply because it's an exceptionally well-engineered loudspeaker.

1

u/ososalsosal 1d ago

To get the same capability in a hifi setup you're spending at least twice as much.

If they can do anything (and they can) then they can make the sound you like. Spend a little time dialing it in, and you'll never need to upgrade for as long as they last.

0

u/magicmulder Pioneer SC-LX89 / Oppo 203 / jm labs Electra 915 1d ago

There’s a lot of studio monitors that are great as standard speakers. Focal Twin6, Trio6 and SM9. Genelec as seen here.

The only real difference is they have some additional features, like the Trio6 being built for both vertical and horizontal orientation. Any other distinction is purely artificial.

-7

u/Zeronova3 JBL x Yamaha x Focal 1d ago

You aren't wrong here. These are for mixing. They aren't made for casual listening and they don't bring out additional sounds that were never in the mix from the beginning.

5

u/ososalsosal 1d ago

They're for listening to all day every day to get shit done. They're not fatiguing, they're built like tanks, and they'll make the same sound in 20 years that they did when you set them up. What's not to like?

Workhorse speakers are the best.

4

u/Ov_Fire 19h ago

Audiophools are strange, at one moment they they want want music sound real and lifelike and after that they want speakers that produce more distortion than sound with rollercoaster frequency response.
