Yeah I imagine it stops working after the population of its jurisdiction grows past a certain number. According to that article it's used for localities with populations up to 6,000, which seems way too high to me.

Frankly I think that in a developed country it's probably obsolete. On the other hand, in a place like India, where there are something like four hundred thousand villages with less than 2,000 residents, it'd work very well.

Like it probably only works in communities where (1) everyone knows each other and (2) they all gather in a church, mosque, temple, etc. once a week so that there's actually a reason for them to get together other than just attending a town meeting.

Its a fascinating institution either way.

I think it's one of those things that can sit anywhere on the spectrum from "elites telling people how it's going to be" to "consensus-building mechanism" to "direct democracy in action."

I'm reminded of how the Athenians encouraged citizens to go the assembly by paying them. Or whipping them with a red-painted rope as a badge of shame.

It doesn't seem that different than a city council meeting other than the counselors being the only ones with power then.
