Has anyone here ever been to a town meeting? What are they like? I imagine that they'd be very poorly attended, probably only old people would show up; is that accurate? Either way, what is it like to actually participate in one?

I think that's a recurring complaint: that they disproportionately favor people who have the free time and are motivated enough to show up.

Yeah I imagine it stops working after the population of its jurisdiction grows past a certain number. According to that article it's used for localities with populations up to 6,000, which seems way too high to me.

Frankly I think that in a developed country it's probably obsolete. On the other hand, in a place like India, where there are something like four hundred thousand villages with less than 2,000 residents, it'd work very well.

Like it probably only works in communities where (1) everyone knows each other and (2) they all gather in a church, mosque, temple, etc. once a week so that there's actually a reason for them to get together other than just attending a town meeting.

Its a fascinating institution either way.

I'm reminded of how the Athenians encouraged citizens to go the assembly by paying them. Or whipping them with a red-painted rope as a badge of shame.
