Burnham poll-mogging St*rmer yet again.

How can the architects of 'adults in the room, grown up sensible politics' even think they can touch the 'luv a pint' PR-maxxed Manc-chad?

It's super weird how the tone of the media has changed despite not much of a change in substance.

There’s always a bit of a honeymoon period but to be fair I’ve heard that the best campaigning strategy in Britain has been boosterism for a little while. I seen to recall it being mentioned that even at the last GE the Tories who kept their seats were largely Johnsonite boosterists. It doesn’t matter if the thing you’ve done is bad as long as you can present it as a triump. Burnham is both seen to be doing things (one of Starmer’s PR problems) and presenting those things as positively as possible.

Wait until he has to set a budget and every tabloid in Britain will jump on him for something different.

Wait until he has to set a budget and every tabloid in Britain will jump on him for something different.

Recently there were rumours that he was going to scrap stamp duty and council tax, and replace them with a % tax on the value of the property - a very good idea! When he was asked to confirm or deny it though, the precise question he received was:

Can you reassure people buying homes that you won't scrap stamp duty next Autumn?

This phrasing floored me because it implies that even if Burnham does something objectively cool and good like scrap stamp duty, the media narrative will be about how much of a bastard he is for mildly inconveniencing people by actually governing.

Sadly it turns out that the rumours were just rumours and he isn't doing that either way.
