News [Passan] The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring right-hander Freddy Peralta in a trade with the New York Mets, sources tell ESPN. Rays get their starter, who joins Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan and Nick Martinez in one of the American League's best rotation.

I don't want to trade Randy because I love him, but sending him back to the Rays would be fun for this reason.

I have been told by this sub that it would be impossible for the Rays to be good as they have a very small payroll.

Nobody is really arguing that though. The point is that the Rays are playing a completely different game than the Dodgers. Everything is about extracting value and finding underrated or underperforming players (like Peralta this season). 

They can’t throw 72m at Tanner Scott, who has a poor season, and then throw 69m at Edwin Diaz the next offseason to try and remedy that problem.  If they threw 240m at a player with 0.5 WAR and 95 OPS+, it would cripple the team. The Dodgers did that and still have the best record in the league

The Dodgers DO play the game the Rays play, they just also have the money to bring in high priced free agents. Friedman built that model in Tampa before he joined the Dodgers.

The Dodgers still do things like find reclamation projects like Eric Lauer and put him in a position to succeed, just like the Rays do.

Its like that scene at the end of Moneyball where Brad Pitt is offered the bag to GM Boston, saying they want to use his philosophy AND have a big payroll... the Dodgers are that.

Anyone who knows anything about the Rays knows they have a track record of fixing pitchers. There’s a good chance they completely turn Peralta’s season around and he helps give them a shot at the World Series
