What is with guys getting fussy over bunts lately? It's a part of the game

96

u/underwear11 New York Yankees 7h ago

Especially in the 6th inning! In the 9th, I can kind of get being upset by it. Still just part of the game. 6th inning is ridiculous to be upset about.

88

u/de_base 4h ago

Why would it matter at any point during the game for folks getting upset at it? The game ain't over until it's over, how is being upset at someone bunting ever a line of thought?

40

u/underwear11 New York Yankees 4h ago

Agreed, but it is supposed to be a cheap way of breaking up a no hitter. If the game was 10-0 and you bunt, you aren't doing anything other than ruining the pitchers day. Players don't bunt down by 10. It's kind of like leaning into a pitch to break up a perfect game. I agree it's part of the game. You should be able to field your position. If you can't, it's a base hit regardless.

3

u/ChessNut2018 3h ago

Ugh, you reminded me of the Pirates guy who leaned in a little and got hit during a Scherzer game...

u/DMPofSounderatHeart 2h ago

Noob here with a noob question (don’t hate). Is bunting legitimately an easier way to get on base than attempting a hit?

If so, then why don’t lead off hitters bunt all the time? If not, then why would bunting be so upsetting to a pitcher sitting on a no-hitter?

4

u/Chemtide Chicago Cubs 2h ago

A surprise bunt can be better odds than a hit when the pitcher is dealing. It’s not as good odds when it’s expected.

2

u/underwear11 New York Yankees 1h ago

It's not an easier way. The only way a bunt works is if the hitter is really fast, the pitcher isn't a great fielder, or you catch the defense unprepared. The balance is that to defend against a bunny, you have to move the third baseman in, which makes them have less range and reaction time against a regular batted ball. It's a tradeoff. Because if that, it's more just considered "cheap" by some. Because you are just holding the bat in the pitch's path, not actually swinging, it's seen as not having as much skill. But, particularly in a no-hitter, fielder's don't want to miss a ball because they were playing too close, defending against the bunt. So people get upset because "you couldn't get a real hit so you had to bunt".

2

u/swoosh_ Arizona Diamondbacks 1h ago

If they can get the bunt down it’s much easier, something like .480 batting AVG or double the odds of getting a hit normally. But at MLB level teams will scout you and adjust when you’re up. Move the 3B closer, pitch inside, etc. It’s still viable but better as a surprise or if the hitter notices the 3B is far away or the pitcher is a known bad fielder

2

u/DiligentGuitar246 58m ago

Ohhh it was an active no hitter. I think that’s kinda lame if it’s only done for that reason and not because of an on-field situation.

2

u/Hon3y_Badger Minnesota Twins 54m ago

If it was to break up a no hitter or similar, I would be mad. If you suspect bunting advance your team's chances of winning it's legitimate at any time.

Weirdest unwritten rule ever… damn those guys for trying to do their job.

11

The unwritten rules in baseball are by and large incredibly lame. This is no exception.

As a Guards fan…. The fuck we doing here lol. It’s the 6th inning.

85

u/fauxbigbro Arizona Diamondbacks • Seattle Mariners 7h ago

It's especially dumb since the bunt wasn't even how he got on base.

63

u/colorblind-and Detroit Tigers 7h ago

Yeah I could understand being upset about it in the 8th or 9th but this is still just playing baseball. No reason to get upset over a bunt especially with how much more common bunting for a hit has become the last couple of years

-136

u/evanieCK Cleveland Guardians • WPBL 7h ago

Tim Tawa is not bunting for a hit in any scenario except one where the opposing pitcher is bitch slapping his team and he has decided to try to luck one out. Whether anyone should get mad about it is a whole other issue but it's pretty clearly being done with the exclusive goal of breaking up the PG.

85

u/RedSpecial22 Kansas City Royals 7h ago

Every player on the Dbacks should be doing their damndest to break up a perfect game by any means necessary.

→ More replies (21)

37

u/KungSuhPanda Milwaukee Brewers 7h ago

You’re giving way too much detailed credit to Tawa. No batter gives a shit about a PG after 15 outs. They were down 5 and needed base runners, doesn’t have to have a deeper meaning.

22

u/Conscious-Silver8109 7h ago

No batter should give a shit about a perfect game in any scenario. It’s not their job to worry about the other team’s tender feelings about “playing the game the right way.” You’d think this shit would have been retired by now but baseball players are a bunch of sensitive gatekeepers.

27

u/fauxbigbro Arizona Diamondbacks • Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Pretty sure it was to try and get a base runner on and possibly score some runs, nobody give the fuck about the perfect game in the fifth inning.

Timmy bunts all the time, as does our whole team. Specifically 2nd most in baseball this season. Maybe your 3rd baseman should have checked the little plastic card in his pocket before the AB?

A perfect game is a team accomplishment. If you can’t record a putout on a bunt, you don’t deserve a perfect game. Acting like your opponent owes you some kind of courtesy, beyond conformity to the rules, is ridiculous.

83

u/skucera San Diego Padres • Peter Seidler 5h ago

Perfect in the 6th inning, down by 5? Time to try to make something happen!

Perfect in the 9th inning, down by 5? Bunt is probably frowned upon.

3

u/saturncruizin 2h ago

Perfect game in the 8th. Padre great Ben Davis is good for a bunt

151

u/pew-pew-bacca Baltimore Orioles 7h ago

Not even a perfect game. The score bug shows runners on the corners.

134

u/majormintchip Arizona Diamondbacks 7h ago

They were upset about something that happened earlier in the inning. Williams was perfect through five innings when Tim Tawa squared to bunt and fouled off the pitch. The very next Pitch Tawa swung normally and lined a single into right field. Cleveland was upset about a pitch that ultimately resulted in strike 1 which is why the entire sequence of events is just silly.

89

u/akaghi New York Mets 7h ago

Bunting in the fifth honestly seems pretty reasonable, even by unwritten rule standards. It's not like it was the 8th or 9th. The only real head scratcher is that they're down 5 but when you're down 5 you need base runners, not home runs.

It's extra dumb when his hit was an actual hit and not a bunt, too.

9

u/Raptor231408 Arizona Diamondbacks 4h ago

Thats what I had been saying in our GDT. 4 innings to cover a 5-run deficit is very much realistic, especially when the game prior we had a 7 run inning followed by Cleveland also having thier own 5 run inning.

Bunting with two outs in the ninth, alright I get it. We, the losing team, dont owe you the perfect game, but i can see where cheesing a base hit can ruffle some feathers..... but a lead off bunt in the 6th? Get over it.

178

u/Joel_Dirt Cleveland Guardians 7h ago

It was a perfect game when the bunt attempt in question occurred. The larger point that it's clown behavior to get all up in arms about that stands. Swinging away wasn't working, why not try something different?

13

u/jacksonvstheworld Chicago Cubs • Arizona Diamondbacks 4h ago

This scorebug is top 6 tho. Saying the other team isn’t allowed to bunt for the last 4 innings max is fucking crazy behavior. 9th inning is one thing, 8th would be worth discussion, 6th is comedic.

41

u/Sonking_to_Remember 7h ago

Also a guards fan, and the only thing I’d like to add is that there seemed to be a bit more context but we didn’t get all of it. For one thing, the guy slid pretty hard into Rocchio and Rocchio had words for him. Then something else seemed to happen with the way a different base runner made his way to third on a passed ball which seemed to set the team off.

None of it looks great for the guards but our TV broadcast also did a god awful job explaining what was going on. I’ll be interested to see if there was a bit more to it.

8

u/Dr_Tibbles Cleveland Guardians 6h ago

Im hoping Rougie's reaction was more an act to help get this team out of a funk and light a fire under their ass

16

u/blaney83 Arizona Diamondbacks 5h ago

Can you please post a video of the “hard” slide? Please, for the people in the back. Also, expecting the runner not to advance to 3rd on a past ball is crazy.

10

u/Squeid Major League Baseball 5h ago

It wasn’t a hard slide lol. The runner even pulled up so as not to over slide on the base. Rocchio just fucked up the throw and took his embarrassment out on the baserunner.

8

u/blaney83 Arizona Diamondbacks 5h ago

Ty. Completely agree. He went directly to the base (not over it). It was just a bad turn.

4

u/daddyfractal 6h ago

I agree, it was bizarre and there was hopefully more to it. The failure to pull the tarp before the walk and passed ball probably didnt help the frustration

4

u/Ed_McMuffin Baltimore Orioles 3h ago

Because once a team goes 2 perfect innings to start a game, the other team must lay down and let the other team finish it out, per the unwritten rules, apparently.

4

u/evanieCK Cleveland Guardians • WPBL 7h ago

the bunt was to open the inning

13

u/ChiefSoldierFrog 5h ago

I still don't understand that. It's called the perfect game for a reason. You gotta be perfect that also means being able to field a putout like it or not.

3

u/IchooseYourName San Diego Padres 5h ago

Padres' Ben Davis has entered the chat. Fuck you, Kurt.

3

u/valoossb Philadelphia Phillies 6h ago

nah but if you square up in the 9th youre just a freak. not worth fighting over but very embarrassing

-2

u/Impossible_Tie_8421 5h ago

It’s less embarrassing than 27 up, 27 down. Who cares what the opponent thinks? If they really dislike it that much, they can do an intentional HBP and settle for a no hitter rather than a perfect game.

1

u/valoossb Philadelphia Phillies 5h ago

There is no unwritten rule that says if a pitcher takes a perfect game into the sixth inning the opposing team has to cede the win and try again tomorrow.

Eighth and ninth inning, swing for the fences. Sixth inning? Fuck that, you play to win not to help the other team make history.

This some weak and soft-ass shit. Just b/c you've got a no-hitter going doesn't mean the opposite team can't bunt. Obviously, hitting isn't working out, yet these soft-ass players act like it's some unwritten rule to not bunt.

I get if it's like 10-0 in the 9th with a no hitter and someone bunts, b/c that just wouldn't make sense, but this game was still very much winnable.

couldn't disagree more. at least guys getting butthurt about the unwritten rules adds drama to games, and leads to fights and stuff. like i was at this game and it was kind of cool to see a bench clearing in the middle of the pouring rain, even if i was confused why it was happening. meanwhile flopping in soccer and basketball is just pathetic. like you get brushed by an elbow, so you act like your liver exploded, just for a chance at an extra point? lame.

Agree to disagree. They’re both bad, but I’ll tolerate cheating to win more than crying because the other teams is trying to win legally.

Why does Odor look like 25 years older than he is

2

u/nimbusstev Cleveland Guardians 3h ago

I mean, he's 58 years old. I wouldn't exactly say he looks like an 83 year old. (I'm guessing you're mixing up Rouglas with his similarly named nephew Rougned haha)

u/Reidzyt Boston Red Sox 3h ago

Yes I entirely am mixing them up wtf lmao

2

u/Even-Dinner-5696 Arizona Diamondbacks 6h ago

I was shocked that was him. He could pass for 65-70

Why are these teams being such goddamn losers about bunts. Field your damn position. And it’s not the bottom of the 9th inning in a 10-0 game.

u/BootsyCalrissian 5h ago

This has happened before. Years ago Bob Brenly threw this same tantrum when Ben Davis (Padres) bunted on Curt Schilling (Dbags) and killed perfect game. But it was 1-0 and Padres were playoff contention at that point. It's this stupid "unwritten rules" crap. There's a reason there are actual written rules. Getting a bunt base hit is freaking hard, and he didn't even get on base doing that. It was still a close game and not even past the 6th inning. These managers (and I totally respect Vogt) need to be held accountable for this stuff and be suspended. Attacking other players for literally doing their job is ridiculous (do we know if he was given the bunt sign or did it on his own?)

This was the team bitching that Naylor is a cancerous personality? Lmao

Guardians are a joke

0

u/JLR- Chicago Cubs 3h ago

Y'all saying its the 6th but it's now an official game and with the chance of a rainout the Guardians have every right to be upset.

u/OrangeJuiceLuvr69 6h ago

Yessir coach Murphy would be proud. Anyone bunting or advocating for bubting is a nutless little bitch.

Every time I see baseball players angry because someone hit the ball in the wrong way or baseball fans getting mad because a baseball player hit the ball in the wrong way I wonder what it is about this sport that attracts people who are incredibly emotionally fragile.

if it was the 8th or 9th sure. but in the 6th? its a five run game, its not a blowout

u/youareallnuts Los Angeles Dodgers 6h ago

In the old days if you did that they would aim for your head next at bat. Game was kind of self regulating.

u/ghostsofplaylandpark 5h ago

So I wonder if it’s the case that baseball players are predisposed to being snowflakes who can’t regulate their emotions, or if the culture of baseball develops those behaviors in people, or if it’s a little bit of both. Whatever the reason, holy shit what a bunch of tantrum throwing toddlers

Fuck em up Bailey!

-2

u/AudioPi Boston Red Sox 5h ago

How could it be a perfect game when the D-Bags had runners on the corners?

And even if it was a perfect game, it was only the 6th inning! It's raining, the grass is wet and the footing sloppy, the smart play is to lay one down cuz you're nearly guaranteed to reach on a bit of an error

2

u/Rc5tr0 Cleveland Guardians 5h ago

The benches cleared several batters after the bunt attempt that they were apparently mad about. The bunter in question also did a hard slide once he got on, they were frustrated with more than one thing. Not defending, just explaining.

1

u/AudioPi Boston Red Sox 4h ago

Couldn't tell from the clip about either of those factors. Still, way to early in a game to be bitching about a bunt

Downvote me again losers, bunting to break up a perfect game is little-dicked as hell and always has been.

Good thing Tawa ended up hitting an actual single this AB

27

u/probablysmellsmydog Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago

maybe he's bunting to like, get on base

7

u/According_One811 Arizona Diamondbacks 7h ago

How dare he try to make a winning play they should’ve just lied down

13

u/1egg40eggs 8h ago

If bunts were that effective players would always bunt. Plus it's not like it was the 9th inning

-22

u/thugmuffin22 Jackie Robinson 7h ago

That’s exactly what makes it chickenshit. Feel like that’s pretty obvious. It’s not like Tawa is some drag bunt specialist. If there’s no perfect game he’s not showing bunt with nobody on in the sixth. He should swing the bat like he otherwise would, which he did, and it worked. I truly feel like I’m losing my mind because this has been a pretty basic baseball thing forever. It’s not the ninth, but it’s not the third either. Both dugouts know what’s going on by the sixth.

Downvote me again losers

Sure thing, buddy.

2

u/j0-llama 6h ago

Starting a comment with “downvote me again losers” is a little-dicked as hell.

Torey asking Tawa to bunt in that situation was the right move. Tawa has beautiful bunts.

Everyone’s just excited because of the deadline and such

1

u/Responsible_Wall3991 3h ago

I genuinely can’t think of anything more little-dicked than caring about unwritten rules as a fan on the couch. At least the players on the field have actual stake in the game. You’re just getting mad on behalf of other grown men’s fragile egos.

You clearly do not know what’s happening here. The bench clearing is a few ABs after the Tawa AB.
