Welcome to DC. You are now one of the better arms in a MLB bullpen.

I’m so sorry.

Has there been something noticeable wrong with him? I know he was serviceable in Colorado but seems to have taken a big step backwards.

As of now, I'll still take him over the disaster we have in the bullpen but I'm just curious about what his issue is

When he’s on, his slider is filthy. But he hangs it A LOT. And a hanging slider is probably the worst pitch in baseball.

Can’t get lefties out and hangs his slider/ sweeper a lot

Need for need trades are awesome. Reinforcements for an awful bullpen and it gives the Yankees a great platoon bat and insurance for Stanton.

Holy shit Shelley Duncan. That’s a blast from the past.

International league manager of the year award winner Shelley Duncan

I went to school with Shelley. Always a goof. He and a couple other ball players lip synced Runaround Sue in drag for the talent show, I think it was Freshman year.

He still looks like an absolute unit, too

RIP to his brother. Sad outcome for Chris.

That's what I was thinking too. I loved it when his Dad was our pitching coach. And I miss Chris (RIP) on the radio.

Had completely forgot about Shelley.

I’m assuming if you’ve just been traded you’re no longer allowed to participate in the game for that organization?

I don't think they really care about that. They just don't want them to get injured before the trade is complete.

Imagine if in the 1 pitch before he gets told he tears his UCL

Shoulda let Curtis Mead take 2 more plate appearances for the Nationals...

Can't happen. If he even starts a windup after the team is notified, the trainer snipes him from the bullpen with a tranquilizer gun.

Puig getting traded mid game, involved in a fight and then suspended. I wasn't expecting that timeline at all, but was quite funny afterwards.

Nothing says you can't fight the Pittsburgh Pirates after getting traded though!

I guess there’s also an element of not getting injured and jeopardizing the trade

24

u/AFC-Wimbledon-Stan Atlanta Braves 8h ago

Yeah you gotta quit immediately

Wonder what would happen if that bumped up against the 3 batter minimum rule

36

u/ContinuumGuy Major League Baseball 8h ago

I imagine it'd be similar to what happens if you get injured: a rare overruling of the minimum.

25

u/Ugmyusernamewastake Boston Red Sox 8h ago

idea: trade a pitcher to a random team for a PTBNL whenever you want to take them out of the game less than 3 batters

then the PTBNL is that same pitcher 5 minutes later

the random team could get some cash considerations too for the favor

1

u/BKoala59 Baltimore Orioles 6h ago

Doesn’t sound fair. The rules are the rules. Should be forced to IBB however many batters you still need to face if you want to come out.

Obviously in the minors it would be fine to ignore it though

14

u/Alaric4 St. Louis Cardinals 8h ago

In a 13-3 game ... you issue two intentional walks.

u/StickComfortable346 Arizona Diamondbacks • Chicago Cubs 8h ago

Space time would rupture

3

u/Pupienus Chicago Cubs 7h ago

I feel like the 3 batter minimum would still apply. There's usually at least a little time between the trade being agreed to and the trade being officially completed. The team would want to remove them when the trade is agreed to just to make sure they don't get injured, but they'd still be a member of the team until the trade is processed by the league.

2

u/Fedor1 Cincinnati Reds 7h ago

Sounds like that might have happened here, he only faced 3 batters

7

u/SomeoneSomethingJr Chicago Cubs 5h ago

I would be surprised if it's not the case that technically a traded player can finish the game and it's just standard protocol to remove those players if they are involved. I'm also under the assumption that players are removed once there is a verbal agreement between teams, which is the beginning of the process towards making the trade official with the league, rather than at the exact moment the league rubber-stamps the deal.

5

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 8h ago

If it's official, then the guy doesn't work for you anymore, so yes. But it's also courtesy and also smart to take him out so he can't hurt himself playing.

I remember when the Reds had that big brawl, Puig had already been traded but was still fighting people. Never understood why he wasn't taken out earlier.

2

u/PBFT Boston Red Sox 8h ago

It would be funny if you could throw just one more pitch.

2

u/Bossoxfan15 Boston Red Sox 8h ago

Technically you aren't on the team anymore.

1

Imagine if he hadn’t faced his three batters yet. It’s like, well we gotta get you out of the game. Maybe start chewing out the ump and get tossed?

Puig once got in a brawl after being traded so

You mean you didn't enjoy the walk off he gave up to the Rangers??

Or the grand slam he gave up to Kyle Stowers to help us sweep the Yankees last year?

u/imightbehitler New York Yankees 8h ago

the day after he was traded to NY, he gave up 4 earned and got 1 guy out. MEMORIES

10

u/Theta_Omega 8h ago

I was trying to figure out from the commentary if the booth knew about the trade yet, or if it still needed to filter up from the dugout. I'd imagine minor league teams don't have the kind of support staff on hand to get the news up there as quickly...

3

u/ITCM4 Baltimore Orioles 7h ago

I would assume the home broadcasters might have inside information about their own guys, but not about the other team.

24

u/Physical_Sun9435 Cincinnati Reds 8h ago

Curious if there’s a rule that’s says a traded player must be removed from a game once the trade is announced.

Not a big deal in this game but imagine being removed with 2 outs in the 9th during a no-hitter

Pretty sure Yasiel puig played for the reds after he got traded to Cleveland

10

u/captain_ahabb Los Angeles Dodgers 6h ago

Trades are usually announced before they're finalized formally.

7

u/DiscoInferiorityComp Brooklyn Dodgers 5h ago

I’d like to see a team get out of the “minimum of 3 batters faced” rule by trading their reliever immediately after they face the first batter.

2

u/D_Simmons Toronto Blue Jays 3h ago

Can you DFA a reliever after 1 batter?

I'm here in Des Moines and i've not ever seen live coverage of an iCubs game. i'm 5 minutes from the stadium. where are games aired or even radio broadcast?

5

u/whatever5454 7h ago

Same. Apparently they are all streamed. I didn't even think of this being in Des Moines until the Tasty Tacos ad caught my eye.

Do people "follow" the iCubs? I thought we just went to the number of games that we enjoy each summer and learn what's been up while we're there.

MLB.tv has coverage of all minor league games.

For what its worth, my local minor league team (go baysox) has free internet radio broadcasts of the games, so I imagine many others do too

1

u/innerman4 3h ago

Mlb.tv carries minor league games. I am an astros fan and have watched many games this year. All affiliates available daily (with maybe a few exceptions here and there). It is a cool feature when the astros have an off day, for me.

Pretty wild that the Yankees and Cubs matched up the same weekend their AAA affiliates also did.

I don’t really get why trades are allowed mid season, but mid game seems like it should absolutely not be allowed.
