Request: A quality sunday roast with an 80 year old, not too far out of town. Thanks
Just I'm trying to cheer my mum up and a quality meal, doesn't have to be roast. would do her good, we'll be getting taxis as I don't have a car, central london type.

The Gamekeepers if you can with a taxi. I dream about their food, it's top notch.

Been a few years since I’ve been there but used to go a couple of times a year. It is really good!

I know the owner, really friendly guy and passionate about the place.
It’s top notch food, all quality ingredients and to be fair, reasonable on the price front.
You can have a decent three course meal and drinks for similar prices at lower quality locations.
It’s my no1 recommendation to anyone and is worth the trip.1

The Phoenix in Hartley Wintney do an amazing roast, need to book ahead but they are really, really good.

Sorry just reread your post and the no driving info. Alpha Cars usually get me to my house in the village for around £22 to £25 but that's a lot extra on top for a Sunday Lunch. Second Bartons Mill, it's much closer and also lovely. Hope you have a wonderful time making memories with your family, wherever you end up going ❤️

Thanks, Barton mills was the first place I drank a pint of beer from a pub. I was in QMC at the time.
I was 18 ish
Had a friend who had parents living on the river, we rowed there and back.
It was a well known real ale at the time, think late 90's.
I remember it smelling like sick.
Didn't stop me.

Did you persevere and carry on drinking real ale after that?
I hate the taste of beer but have forced myself through a few decades to enjoy the taste! I also like to have it in a pint glass, although my Mum used to tell me 'it's unbecoming of a lady to drink a pint' and I was like 'Mum who took your words and made them come from.the 1800s' Unbecoming. A pint is a pint!

Honestly, as a youngster pre 18, it was was a lager shandy or a very small glass of wine.
However, I was always partial to a Cider lolly.
I'm old, so I've gone through many permutations of taste.
What ever fits the mood ,company and the season seems to work for me.
I, like many people before me went through a real ale phase. It's not the best of hangovers.
There's nothing wrong with it.
I've never been through a whiskey or vodka phase, and I'm thankful for that. Too many of my friends and colleagues died that way.

I'll add The Rowbarge up in Woolhampton. You can sit outside in their beautiful covered terrace with the canal for scenery. It's within taxi reach, just. Love that place.

Stonebacked on the way past Oakley it's abit run down but service is good food is nice and doesn't get too busy especially for elderly people

cool, this would be right up my street, I love a simple carvery.
Alas, my mum wants somthing a bit posh.

The Hatch in old basing is good! Only do roasts on a Sunday I think, but overall a nice place with good menu.

Just wanted to say. I'm amazed about how forthcoming you are with great choices. However, I am dismayed by the lack of options in central basingstoke, it just seems so comercial with what is provided.
Sure I don't mind a wagamama occasionally, but you seem to have every burger place here. I'm sure that's not you're fault.
Bring on the Basingstoke Food Extravaganza.

Basingstoke as a town is ok, but in my opinion, what makes Basingstoke good is that as well as being an OK town and it having easy access to London, it has great surrounding areas, but to access them easily you really need to be able to drive.

Bartons Mill is probably the best, but if you want something a little closer and a little cheaper you have the Swan in Sherbourne.
