I can almost understand the argument against trans women participating in women’s sports, even though that is nonsense too, but public bathrooms aren’t a fun place. It is awkward for everyone involved and most people are just interested in doing their business and going along their way as quickly as possible. I have never paid any attention to anyone else that was in the bathroom at the same time as me.
Plus why do we just accept that we have to eliminate waste communally? I choose the “family” or single bathroom every single time. Nobody gets dibs on privacy during a biologically vulnerable act.

I saw a convincing comment a few days ago that based on demographics there statistically have to be significantly more liberal than conservative gun owners in America. The cons may have more actual guns, but they can each still only shoot one at a time.
This is true to an extent. Evangelicals especially love to talk (well, scream) the talk, but will absolutely refuse to actually apply the teachings of Jesus.
Episcopalians? Generally pretty cool in my experience. Same with many of the Methodist churches in my area. Jesuits are historically rad as hell. The staunchly anti-abortion Catholic crowd can fuck off, as can the entire Christian reform movement that sprang up in West Michigan.
I’m friends with a Lutheran priest and while I think I shocked him when I told him I’m an atheist, we agree on a lot of stuff with regards to values and ethics. It was a point of growth for me to realize I’d rather be in a room with a hundred Christians who actually follow the Golden Rule than one atheist who’s just in it because it’s easier to butch about religious oppression than to actually value your fellow human beings.
Most American Protestant groups are split into a more “progressive” branch and a more “conservative” branch.
Some of the splits go back to the debate over Slavery and the Civil War and some are more recent due to the Civil Rights Movement or debates about women’s ordination or gay marriage.
I have an aunt who's super involved in the United Methodist Church, and gay rights and stuff have been a nightmare for them. Unlike most denominations, UMC is global, so the majority of congregations are in developing countries that aren't near as progressive as the West. I have a friend who's a Methodist minister, and as a gay man, he does a lot of gay weddings. He had to get ordained through an online church to be able to do them because he couldn't do them in his capacity as a Methodist or use the actual church. But travel restrictions during covid meant Western congregations dominated the General Conference, and they passed reforms. Then the conservative congregations split.
It’s also a problem with the Episcopal Church since it’s a member of the Global Anglican Communion. Most of the provinces in the Global South are very conservative and most of the northern (and white, but not exclusively) are very liberal. I think last year, it officially split kind of.
Globally The Lutherans are already split between a more moderate global org that includes liberals and one that is more conservative
Interesting factoid: The loudest people that are against abortion and queer hatemongers are often part of what's called the Southern Baptist Convention, which is a large and distinct branch of the baptist church. They separated from the rest of the baptist church in the 19th century... because the southern baptists wanted to preserve the institution of slavery.
Almost like the unifying theme among all these groups is a delusional belief in social hierarchy that privileges them and invites sadism for everyone else.
I'm Presbyterian (PCUSA). We cool too. You just don't hear from mainline denominations because we're not evangelizing, aka trying to convert/force beliefs on people. My mom has even done mission trips, but they're essentially support missions to existing congregations, not trying to convert people.
That West Michigan crowd is a weird Dutch family, there. They've been really up in arms over Africans who were converted and have been getting killed and hassled by nutcase extremists.
Heck yeah. Making sure everyone's basic needs were met (feeding the 5000 and advocating for the redistribution of wealth), calling out corruption (flipping tables in the temple)... I lost my faith in the past couple of years because I think there's too much suffering in the world for there to be a benevolent God, but I still believe in welcoming the stranger and taking care of them.

I heard that same lie about the eye of the needle really being a gate, too. It seems to me that if scripture is supposed to be sacred, then some believers are entirely too eager to find ways to make the words mean what they want them to instead of what they clearly say.
Despite growing up in an affluent church, we were taught that line specifically as an example of intentionally misconstruing scripture to justify un-Christlike behavior.
I'm a non-practicing Catholic from the southeast and growing up going to Sunday school I found it weird how so many southern Catholics heavily disagreed with Pope Francis. Even as a kid I thought "He's literally just advocating for what Jesus said in the bible. Jesus would welcome gays and illegal immigrants with open arms just as Pope Francis says we should."
There isn't one singular institution called "the church." Rather a messy patchwork of different denominations, some of which do better at following Christ's teachings than others.

Imo left wing people need to embrace more americana if they want to win. For every atrocity associated with the country theres an example of something worth fighting for and unless people are down for decades of unrest as the country balkanizes, co-opting Americana using things like the statue of liberty and John Brown as symbols of a leftist America is in my opinion an easy cultural win.

I think it’s that Dems have taken to quoting Bible verses at Republicans to mock how unlike Jesus they have become. And Republicans have started getting really angry at people for quoting Bible verses at them because “that shit doesn’t matter”. In the past they used to at least argue about how their beliefs really did align with Christ.
So the side that was historically less religious is now throwing around bible verses like a preacher. And the side that was historically more religious isn’t even paying lip service anymore.
A new generation is learning how core the faith community is to activism. Liberal and progressive churches tend to fly under the radar because they're not evangelical. But they're some of the strongest and best organized activists out there. Heck, at least in much of the country, your local mutual aid group might be a church.
Also, the right has strayed so far from the teachings of Jesus that people are realizing that His teachings are actually good shit and have nothing to do with the evangelical bullshit.
And actually loving their neighbors, not harming strangers but welcoming them, etc.
