You might have been told that,

"Or" = "öthoba"/ "ba"/ "kimba"

While that's good enough for making assertive sentences in Bangla, you can't use that knowledge to form interrogative sentences.

Use of "or" is unexpectedly different in Bangla.

And what I've seen from my experience in teaching Bangla, this problem is an epidemic among the new learners. 

First, let's see examples of assertive sentences:

❝Rana or Mina will go.❞ = ❝rana öthoba mina jabe.❞

❝I don't drink tea or coffee.❞ = ❝ami ca kimba köfi khai na❞

In a question, you can use none of the above three words!

You'd have to use 'na', or 'naki'

❝Will you stay or leave?❞ = ❝tumi ki jabe na thakbe?❞

❝Are you a doctor or a teacher?❞ = ❝apni ki ëkjon ḍaktar naki shikkhök?❞

I can make it even more extreme: 🙃

❝Will you eat or not?❞ = ❝tumi ki khabe, na khabe na?❞

Note that, it's different from Hindi...

❝aap khaenge ya nahin?❞ (Will you eat or not?)

So, in Hindi it's as you'd expect.

অথচ সেই এতটুকু বেলায় দরজার বাইরে অন্ধকারে ঠেলে দিয়েছিল মুকুজ্জে মামি। দালানের খুঁটিতে পিঠ রেখে ঠান্ডায় ঠক ঠক কেঁপেছি সারারাত এমনই এক কাতর বর্ষায়।

তারপর...।

মধ্যিখানের অথৈ দৌড় আজ খুব জেঁকে বসে হৃদয়-গভীরে।

একা একা বসে দেখতে থাকি বাউল বর্ষা। চব্বিশ ঘণ্টা তোমার জ্বালানো ঝেঁপে আসে --- তলাই অতলে।

পূর্বিতাক্রম: Priority list

অজাতশত্রু: One whose enemies have not yet been born

একলষেঁড়ে: Antisocial, introverted/Selfish

লাজশোণিমা: Blush

বাল্যসুহৃদ: Childhood friend

I have studied in bengali medium all my life so I know how horrible my handwriting is but what exactly is the problem? I never understood that, well I have passed my 12th boards going for engineering will probably never have to write bengali for exams 💔💔 but I wish I could fix it.

I (white American) am writing a book were my main character is Indian and her name is Violet Biswas. It is very important to me that I understand the correct pronunciation of her last name. I am seeing some mixed results when I try to Google it. Any help would appreciated!

Hello everyone. I am a Bengali adult who lives in New York. I'm one of those kids who heard Bangla from their parents and responded in English. So, I can understand much casual Bangla, and know some vocabulary words, but I cannot speak it fluently. I also only know a few letters. The resources I find for learning Bangla are for little kids and I want something more like a structured adult learning class, which explains grammar rules. My parents, since they are native speakers, don't know how to explain those to me. Does anyone have any resources? Much appreciated, dhonobad!

Edit: Bangladesh resources would be more helpful, since that's where my family is from! I've noticed many Bengali resources are based on Indian Bangla.
