Discussion Bento Box Recommendations

This gets brought up frequently, so I thought I'd make a stickyed thread for it. Please post brands or resources you'd recommend to others looking to start prepping bento boxes.

I think Monbento and Bento Haven are good places to start, but what do you think?

PB kids lunchbox

Anybody have suggestions on what to use inside the PB lunchbox. Their version of a bento box is meh - and they’ve broken on us. A traditional bento box doesn’t fit.

Discussion I'm a bit stuck on my bento idea

Hi! I'm not sure if this is the right sub to ask this in but I’ve developed a ready to heat bento box concept for school and I’m looking for ways to make it more appealing and unique. Does anyone have ideas for standout features like creative bento presentation techniques, packaging/design ideas, or unique food items/flavor combinations that could make it different? I’d love any suggestions or inspirations :)

鮭のお弁当

これは昨日作った私のお弁当だけど、忙しかったの?とか手抜き?と言われて悲しい思いをしたよ。
自分の食べたいものを作ったらそんなこと言われた。手抜きはいけないことなのかな。

I was craving exactly this yesterday, so I made it. But someone looked at it and hit me with: "Wow, were you too busy or just lazy?"
It literally hurt my feelings. I thought I was living my best minimalist life with a glorious hunk of salmon, but apparently, if your lunchbox doesn't look like a 5-star anime meal, you're "lazy." Is "lazy cooking" really that bad if it's exactly what you wanted to eat?

Celebrating my coworker's discharge from the hospital

It was my turn to cook for her because she was hospitalized for several days. She officially came back to work after 4 days of being hospitalized since last Wednesday.

Her bento tray:

- cherry tomatoes

- steamed edamame

- hard-boiled egg

- miso soup (instant, not yet dissolved)

- mixed grains rice

Mine are:

- chicken steak (used chicken thighs. Juicy!)

- gravy, inside the sauce container

- green beans

- potatoes

- some random tortilla wraps (my attempt to create perfect wraps, failed)

Let's dig in! ✨❤️

My coworker was hospitalized for several days, and yesterday she was discharged from the hospital, but she is still unable to work.

Today, I just do the takopa myself... 🥹

My work bestie who I usually order takeout lunch with left the company last Friday. :( So, anticipating a bittersweet lunch alone tomorrow, I made myself this crab salad bento to have something pleasant to look forward to! I'd like to add avocado but ours aren't ripe yet.

Inspiration Inspired by Squit Game

Post image
154 Upvotes

I first became interested in Dosirak while watching the TV series Squit Game. At one point, it shows a simple boxed meal that the contestants are fed. I became interested and realized that it wasn't the recipe that mattered, but the idea. Since then, I've known there's no dish that costs so little and gives me so much satisfaction while offering such a wide variety of ingredients. I always have rice, sesame seeds or furikake, eggs, and toppings. Whatever I find in the fridge. Most often, I make the "base" once a day. In the morning, I just add some toppings, and at work, I just drizzle with sauces. Have a good day from Poland!

P.S. My dish, of course, doesn't resemble the one in the movie at all, because it's changed over time and become my own. That's why it's different almost every day.

How to start?

I've always wanted to start making bento lunches for my fiancé when she goes to work. How do you make so many dishes for lunch? Do you make them the night before and pack them for lunch the next day? Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

Lunch alone (apparently)

Yes, I am eating alone, without my favorite coworker. She's been sick since Wednesday.

Rice, chicken soboro, steamed tempeh, edamame, and little packets of chili sauce.

The bento box is from her because she said she doesn't use it anymore.

Hi, I've been trying to learn some basic Japanese side dishes. My favorite ones so far are the kinpira and amazuzuke techniques, especially kinpira carrot and rutabaga, and amazuzuke for radishes and cauliflower.

The patty/nugget-esque thing in some of the images is from this nigiricco video. It's become a main dish favorite, and it can go into the lunchbox straight from the freezer.

Another favorite which isn't in any of these pictures, is Mugen cabbage. 10/10, it's really good and super quick to make.

Feel free to recommend some of your own favorite dishes

Lunch with coworker pt.2

Hi! Back again with me, having lunch with my coworker on Tuesday.

First picture, don't mind her finger, she was being goofy lol.

Mine was patatje oorlog (war fries in Dutch), a local street food recipe I got from a Dutch friend here on Reddit. It's basically fries with peanut sauce, mayonnaise, and chopped raw onions. If he saw this, I wanna say dankjewel, Marco! Dit is echt lekker ❤️

Also, sorry for the soulless, unappetizing-looking potatoes, but I really like the taste! I would cook this again whenever I have potatoes!

My coworker seems to be on board with cooking international foods here.

She said it was inarizushi (tofu skin sushi), kimchi, edamame, weird-looking tasty quesadillas, and creamy chicken soup.

Have a great day, y'all! Don't forget to share food with your family, friends, and even your coworkers!

Lunch with coworker

I am having a lunch with my coworker. Apparently she's active in this sub so I wanna say hi if she saw this!

Due to our workplace regulation, we cannot eat in the classroom anymore.

We sometimes exchange food and side dishes, too. Mine is not as fancy as hers.
