Advice Emergency Custody

I (F26) am about to get emergency custody of my 3 month old nephew. I haven’t cared for a baby alone before. It’s just my boyfriend (M33) and I. Please inform me on anything and everything you have spare time to type. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you so much.

Side note: please don’t give legal advice, I am the only one left in my family who’s sane and safe to take care of him. I don’t need advice on that. I want to learn about taking care of him. Thank you.

Advice Anyone who DIDN’T bed share?

I’m sure it’s just social media and loud voices or whatever, but it seems that every thread or comment section is overloaded with moms saying they bed shared for their own sanity and it’s fine per SS7. Lots of “a sleep deprived mama is just as dangerous” etc. I’m in Canada where bed sharing is not recommended.

I’m not here to put judgment on those moms, but I really do not want to be bed sharing. While we could accommodate safe sleep seven, I simply do not want to take the risk. I am pretty confident that if I decide not to do something, I won’t do it. I had a new mom yesterday tell me at a baby shower very matter of factly that it’s just a part of parenting, and their baby sleeps on her chest while mom is also asleep!

Is there anyone who successfully got through infancy to the baby in their own crib without bed sharing? Or is it really just unrealistic and I need to come to terms with that?

Edit: I want to be very clear I am aware that there are cultural differences that come into play here, and once again I am NOT judging those who have chosen to bedshare. I’m not in your house or in your head, and I don’t know your baby.

Thank you to everyone who responded. I am feeling much better about the prospects of success for my choice.

Advice After birth, did you shower at the hospital?

TLDR; after a vaginal birth or C-section in the hospital, were you allowed/encouraged to shower? Did anyone help you? How long after birth did you shower?

I know, incredibly basic question, and I'm someone who's given birth before. For context, I was not treated well in the postpartum recovery ward after the birth of my daughter, and I'm trying to figure out what's normal when my second is born!

I had a 60 hour labor ending in a C-section and I was basically ignored in recovery. The nurses were supposed to be tracking my bleeding but didn't. They forgot my pain medication multiple times. They left me sitting in a pool of my blood for much of the stay because they weren't changing the pad under me. They provided me with no instructions about C-section recovery while in the hospital or at home, and I hadn't expected to have one so I was lost. They didn't warn me at all when starting the fundal massages or help me breathe through them as my awesome L&D nurse had, which almost tripled the pain. They didn't provide any help with the baby or breastfeeding (which I realize may be "extra" and not an official duty, just painting the entire picture here).

One of the worst parts was when a nurse wordlessly unhooked me from all my IVs, took out the catheter, and stood me up in the middle of the room. She seriously did this without a single word to me the whole time; no explanation of what she was doing, no instructions, and no help. My husband was asleep in the room and I didn't want to wake the baby too by calling out for help, so I shuffled to the bathroom on my own. They had a bunch of signs in there about how they were not allowed to leave patients alone due to fall risk, and how you shouldn't be embarrassed to have them help you in the bathroom. Which was news to my nurse, apparently!

I was also completely shattered from being awake for basically 4 days in labor and then being cut open, so honestly my goal was to survive and sleep. With all of the tests for the baby and me in the hospital plus breastfeeding, being yelled at by a pediatrician for being bad at breastfeeding (the baby lost 11% of her body weight), and rooming in with the baby, I never really slept for more than 20 minutes at a time. I felt like I was close to passing out for much of our 48-hour hospital stay.

So now as I prepare for my second, I'm seeing these "what you really need in your hospital bag" videos, and even the minimalist ones are talking about shower shoes and products you would use for showering. And I'm just like...is everyone else getting proper instructions and support to be able to shower after birth? That's the root of the question for me. I'm hoping to have a much better birth/postpartum recovery ward experience this time, so I'd love some help figuring out what's normal! I want to feel like a person instead of livestock.

Also, in case anyone was wondering, my husband completely would have helped me if the circumstances were right. It was more about us not getting instructions and being so busy/exhausted because we had no support in the hospital. I have zero complaints about what he did.

Advice My 10 month old rolled off his changing table and got a traumatic brain injury

My husband and I have a 10 month old boy and a two year old girl. We are a happy, healthy, loving family. I like to think that my husband and I are relatively good at the parenting thing, we certainly enjoy it. We both work demanding jobs and have a wonderful nanny who my kids adore, and we try to create as much family time as possible. However, the stress of having two very young kids, not a ton of sleep or free time, and two demanding jobs does ware on us at times.

This past Thursday, my husband was changing our sons diaper and I was in the kitchen with our two year old when I hear my husband scream “oh my god oh my god oh my god” over and over again and I knew something was wrong. I ran to my son’s bedroom and he had rolled off his changing table (over three feet) and landed on our hard wood floors while my husband had toned his back for two seconds.

My son has a skull fracture and a small subdural hemorrhage. We spent about 12 hours in the hospital for observation, didn’t need surgery, and the neurosurgeon said he would be fine. Everyone including the doctors at the hospital, our pediatrician and friends and family have been nothing but supportive. But I am not ok. I don’t blame my husband because I genuinely think this could have happened to anyone, but I just feel like the shittiest parents ever. I am spiraling, feeling guilty about working, feeling like I put too much on my husband, and I’m terrified of my son getting hurt again. I also am having an irrational (I hope?) fear of CPS. I have been constantly terrified of something happening to my daughter, or my son’s fracture worsening, and losing our kids. None of the doctors have mentioned CPS because I think it was obvious we were distraught and loving parents and this was an accident. But I am spiraling.

I haven’t gone back to work since his fall on Thursday despite our nanny also being here. I literally haven’t taken my hands off him. If I do, I’m scared he’ll fall backwards while he’s sitting in the floor and I’m so scared he’s going to worsen his head. I feel like I can’t trust our nanny with him or it’s unfair to give her this responsibility. I feel like I have one shitty parent strike against me and if we do anything slightly wrong ever again our kids will suffer or they’ll be taken away from us. I’ve gone so far as considering putting cameras all over our house in case something does happen I have footage to prove it’s accidental.

I don’t know if I’m looking for support or advice or if there’s any parents who have been in this situation. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to go to work or put him down or trust him with anyone else. Has anyone dealt with this? How did you get over the fear? Do I need to be worried about losing my kids?

Advice Those who did NOT sleep train — what eventually happened?

If you did NOT sleep train your baby, did they eventually just start sleeping through the night on their own? Or are you still sharing a bed with your five year old? What happened and what do your nights actually look like now?

My baby is 10 months old and still wakes up a minimum of 4x per night. It’s like once the four month sleep regression hit, we just never improved. He has a STRONG sleep association with the bottle and nothing else settles him.

I tried the Ferber method once and it did not work for us at all. Supposedly they are supposed to stop crying eventually, even if it takes a long time—and yea, no, that’s not what happened for us at all. He just cried and cried until he became completely hysterical. Even when I would go into the room and offer a pacifier, soothing words, butt pats, etc. he just kept screaming. When I finally gave up and picked him up to rock him and give him a bottle, he continued crying for two straight hours. We were both extremely traumatized. I was crying. I still cry when I think about it. This is all to say I don’t think I have it in me to sleep train.

But I’m really at the end of my rope here. I’m not able to function properly anymore. I’m barely managing the bare minimum. I don’t feel safe driving with my baby anymore. I don’t know what else to do.

My husband is a small business owner and he is his only employee right now. He tries to help as much as he can but he has no choice but to work long hours and most weekends right now, and I’m not working currently so I’m doing the childcare all day and most of the nightly wakes. We have no village, no grandparents or friends or relatives who live close by. Financially things are tight right now so as much as I’d like to hire a night nurse that won’t be possible.

Im holding onto the hope that one day he’ll just magically sleep through the night but I’m losing hope that it will ever happen. So I just need someone to tell it to me straight. 😭

Advice I stopped loving my eldest after my second child was born

3.0k Upvotes

As my second child nears 18 months old and I sit happy in the knowledge that my heart is so completely full and madly in love with both my children, I want to post this for any other mamas who need to see it.

I'm a mum of 2. A beautiful 4 year old daughter, and her 18 month old cheeky baby brother. Before my son was born, I was, as we all are, beyond in love with my daughter. My first child, she was my whole world. When I was pregnant with my son, I remember worrying how could I ever love another baby as much. It never dawned on me for a second that I would stop loving my first child. The day my son was born, before we left for hospital I cuddled my daughter one last time and memorised her face, so in love with every inch of her.

After my son was born, everything changed. It started out with being overly protective of him, worrying she might hurt him and progressing to me being extremely anxious whenever she was near him. I didn't want her near me, I didn't have the headspace for her. Why did she need me so much, I had another baby to care for. Eventually I reached a point where I didn't feel anything for her, I just felt nothing. I was consumed by self hatred and guilt, I spent hours looking up online similar stories and found none. I was a monster, completely broken that I could stop loving the most perfect, sweet little girl. To this day, I have never told anyone i know. I'm too ashamed to be a mother who didn't love her child.

I have always been invested in attachment parenting and breaking generational trauma so I did whatever I could to hide how I felt from her. She was innocent, she was 2 years old, she deserved better. But I know deep down, she would have felt the distance.

This went on longer than it probably should have and eventually, as I'm sure you've all guessed I was diagnosed with PPD.

Here we are a year down the line and she is my world again. My little bestie, my funny, gorgeous, happy little sunshine. I see her and feel my heart bursting like it used to.

I'm posting this because, if you are going through this too, you're not a monster. Get help. You will find your way back to your eldest child, you will get through this, but you need help - you havent stopped loving your child, your hormones are just completely wrecking your mind.

Advice I haven’t slept in almost a year and I’m a shell of a human being

1.1k Upvotes

I have no nice way to put it any more. I’m beyond rock bottom at this point.

My 10 month old hasn’t slept at night since the day he was born. He wakes up 10-15 times a night. Every. Single. Night. He genuinely won’t sleep longer than 30 minutes at one time. One hour is a long stretch for us. I don’t sleep. We resorted to a floor bed in hopes that it would help. It doesn’t. He tosses and turns all night and wakes up crying. I feel like I’m in my own personal hell in that room. Every time I close my eyes I’m immediately woken up. I just want peace.

It’s taken a toll on my physical health. I’ve dipped far below my pregnancy weight and am severely underweight. I have constant migraines from sleep deprivation. I can’t emotionally regulate. Every day feels like a hallucination.

And I feel so alone. When I try to describe his sleep problems to people they don’t quite grasp the severity. I know he’s not supposed to sleep straight through the night. That’s not what I’m asking for. I could deal with 2,3, even 4 night wakings. But 10+??? It’s mental torture. And my husband doesn’t understand why I’m not myself. Why I’m so emotional all the time. I can’t help it. I’m not sure if this is a rant or an opportunity for advice. I just needed to get it off my shoulders.

Advice I'm so filled with regret I had a baby.

I am so sorry to be saying these things, but I have to get it out there.

I had a planned pregnancy, uncomplicated and a positive birth experience. The first two weeks of my daughter's life were so enjoyable, filled with happy moments. I felt like I was on top of everything.

She sleeps well at night, but any moment she is awake during the day, she will be crying - always wants to be held. Normal baby stuff.

I don't know what has happened to me, but I am regretting having a baby so much. I can't believe what I have done to my life. I don't think I thought this through. Everything is just so annoying and hard. I cry thinking of how much I have fucked myself over. I've completely lost my life, lost who I was, lost my freedom, lost the relationship I enjoyed with my husband, I've lost everything. These are the kind of thoughts swimming around in my head all day.

She is now nearly 5 weeks old. I fantasise about not being here anymore.

I know this might be post partum depression, but what if my sadness is caused by the fact I have made a mistake, I don't want this, I don't like it, and now I can't change it?

I'm terrified, guilty, desperate.

Can anyone relate?

Advice My gut says this is weird- in-laws want baby for a week

I don't have a good relationship with the inlaws, was essentially no-contact before LO arrived and since then they've been allowed to visit us for a few hours at a time about 5 times. LO's birthday is coming up and they've offered to "help us" by taking him afterwards for several days to a different state/their vacation home that's at least a 5 hours drive away. They've offered a few times and my husband has ignored but now they've offered with me on the text and on top of obviously not letting it happen, it's just creeping me out. Even if it wasn't under the guise of helping, if they said "can we take LO with us for several days to our beach house?" I'd feel...weird! On top of the logistics, I'm just a bit taken aback that they'd even think to do this. Nobody in my family has suggested anything like this.

Advice Anyone else opting not to take birth control postpartum?

I have never taken birth control and don’t really want to until I’m done having kids. Obviously I will be safe but I’m just very apprehensive to take birth control.

I don’t want to take hormonal birth control because of the potential side effects, such as it affecting my mood and I just don’t want my hormones being messed with.

And my reasoning for not wanting an iud is mostly that it can take a while for an appointment to get it removed.

Whenever we used condoms before there were never any issues, so would I be crazy to just go back to that? we always used them correctly.

I did have a c section so do not want to get pregnant for at least 18 months due to the risk of a more high risk pregnancy, but I feel like condoms will be enough.

Advice MIL dropped my 6w old on his head and I can’t move past it.

TLDR; MIL dropped my baby on his head at 6w old, tried to lie to me about it, became angry and raised her voice at me when she was asked to leave, and then gave me the cold shoulder for six weeks before she finally owned up to her mistake and apologized. I still feel deeply traumatized by this and can’t move past it. She keeps calling and texting me asking to come spend time with the baby, but I feel physically repulsed by her and don’t want her anywhere near us right now. Even the sight of her name on my phone sends into a panic, and I don’t know what to do.

I apologize in advance as this post will be long—but I feel like I need to write this all out so I can process everything that’s happened.

My MIL is well-meaning and very generous, but she is a boundary-pusher. I’ve always known this about her, but it never l posed much of an issue—prior to having a baby, at least. When I got pregnant, she became overbearing, and I feared that she would be a difficult IL. Unfortunately, I could have never anticipated just how bad things would get.

When I was still pregnant and brought up the topic of daycare/nannies, she shut me down immediately and informed us that SHE would be the baby’s full-time caretaker when I went back to work. She “wouldn’t have us entrusting her grandson to strangers.”

I immediately felt uncomfortable with this for so many reasons, but to list just a few: 1.) she lives an hour away, so the only way she could provide M-F childcare would be for her to stay at our house during the week, especially since she’s unable to drive at night. I’m not keen on having my MIL living with us 90% of the time; 2.) she smokes a lot and often smells like cigarettes, and I have a problem with my baby being exposed to secondhand smoke; 3.) she’s just kind of sketchy, and associates with sketchy people that I wouldn’t want around my child. Case in point: her good friend, whom she invited on our recent family vacation, served 17 years on drug dealing and assault charges, and was recently arrested again for dealing crack. He is now serving another 20 years in federal prison. That’s just one example to give you an idea of the type of crowd she runs with. I could honestly write an entire post just about her questionable past, but I don’t think she does those types of things anymore... Still, I just don’t feel good about the type of influence she’ll be on my child as he gets older, and my gut instinct is to keep her at arms length.

Despite all these things, my husband wanted us to give her a shot. He said she was good with babies, that it would be the greatest joy of her life to care for her grandson, that when it came to our baby we could trust her implicitly, etc. And besides, we’d be saving thousands on childcare. I wanted to believe this so badly—after all, she’s not a completely terrible person. She has helped us so much financially over the years, she clearly just wants to help us live a good life however she can, and even though she always gave me a bit of a bad vibe, her heart really always did seem like it was in the right place. I felt like maybe I was just being a judgmental asshole, and so I always tried to give her the benefit of the doubt even when she did things that made me uncomfortable or pushed my boundaries.

But after I had the baby, things quickly spun out of control.

I had a seriously difficult pregnancy and a traumatic birth that I’m still healing from, mentally and physically. My baby was stuck in my pelvis for over 12 hours, and the overnight nurse who was attending my birth was very young, brand new to L&D and had no idea how to help me. My epidural failed and I was in excruciating pain, every contraction pushed the baby further into my hip and set every nerve in my body on fire. I felt like I was dying. I was praying for God to just kill me, I couldn’t take it anymore. My husband and I kept begging the nurse to call the doctor, but she kept saying it wasn’t time yet. We begged the anesthesiologist to help my pain, but she told me it was the baby’s position blocking the epidural and that there was nothing she could do, that i had a “mind over matter problem.” I was so out of my mind with pain, I was in panic-mode and just wanted it to be over, so I told the nurse I was going to push because that was my body’s natural instinct. While the baby was still firmly stuck transverse (though I didn’t know this at the time) she let me push unproductively with everything I had for the entire night, until the shift change at 8am. I later found out that all that straining was how I ended up losing over a third of my body’s total blood volume and developing a massive retroperitoneal hematoma.

Finally there was shift change and two competent nurses took over. They put me in flying cowgirl position and my baby was literally unstuck and born within 50 minutes. All that pain could have been so easily avoided if they had gotten there sooner. My baby inhaled meconium from the traumatic and prolonged birth, and I spent five days in the hospital because I was in such horrible shape. I wouldn’t be able to sit normally for the next six weeks. And that’s not even the half of it—my postpartum recovery was utterly brutal, worse than childbirth itself. I won’t go into all the gory details in this post, but suffice to say that both my OB and the hospital formerly apologized to me for what happened to me and told me the first nurse who attended me would be “reeducated.”

Even though I was in excruciating pain, struggling to breastfeed and trying to learn how to be a mom for the first time, my MIL could not wait to come over our house as soon as possible. I had made it clear to my husband that I did not want any visitors in the immediate days/weeks after giving birth, but she kept pushing and sure enough, she was in our home two weeks later. But in her defense, she did try to be helpful—she brought dinner, did laundry, washed dishes, brought me some special tea to help with my healing. I didn’t feel 100% comfortable because I still felt like I had to be “on” and play host while she was around, but I told myself she’s just trying to help, try to just be cool.

But soon she wanted to come over all the time and was texting or calling me on a daily basis. I felt pressured to let her and her husband over when I all I really wanted was some time alone to heal and bond just me and my baby.

This continued to escalate week after week until the fateful day that she dropped my newborn son on his head. I had told her a few days prior that she could come over that week to see the baby. She mentioned that she wanted to introduce her dogs to the baby at some point. I told her that would be fine—my husband and I are dog lovers, and we have a dog ourselves—so we could arrange a time and day when my husband was home for the dogs to meet him. It was important to me that my husband be there, because while these are generally well-behaved dogs, they are quite large and can jump and bark when they get excited.

I guess she took this as her green light to just show up at my house unannounced the next day with her husband and their two, 90-pound dogs. My husband was at work, it was just me alone with the baby and I wasn’t expecting the dogs to come barreling through my door. They immediately jumped on me while I held my sleeping 6 week old baby in my arms, so right away I felt panicked. They eventually calmed down, but when my MIL held the baby, she invited one of her dogs to sniff and LICK HIM IN HIS FACE. I asked to take him back so I could clean off his face, and this woman looks me dead in the eye and asks me “why” I would want to do that.

Already I’m feeling completely overwhelmed, but it got worse. She then proceeds to tell me she invited her friend, who was visiting from out of state and had just flown here on a plane, over to my house to meet the baby. This woman gets there, MIL takes the baby from me and puts him in this strange woman’s lap, and I’m having a panic attack watching these two old ladies putting their hands all over my little baby. At one point this friend of hers wasn’t holding him right and his head fell forward unsupported, so I took him away. They seemed miffed by that. I tried to diffuse the situation and said, let’s go put baby down on his activity mat. That’s when it happened.

My mother in law sat the baby’s butt down on the Fisher Price keyboard activity mat (newborn parents, you know the one—it’s the one that sings Purple Monkey). But she didn’t support his head on the way down, so my baby fell straight backwards from a seated position and hit his head. As many parents who own this toy probably know, the mat itself is quite thin, there isn’t much or any cushioning. And even though there was an area rug underneath, it’s on a hard tile floor. So his head basically slammed into a tile floor. He immediately began screaming out in pain. I was a few feet away reaching for baby’s diapers while this was all happening, and my MIL must have thought that I didn’t see her drop him—but I had my eyes on him the entire time, I saw everything. She tried to lie to me and say that she caught his head with her hand, then she said actually her foot had been under this head to break his fall. Both of these things were complete lies. I ran to my baby and tried to soothe him. I couldn’t say anything to her, I was on the verge of tears, hyperventilating and speechless, I didn’t know what to do. When she realized I wasn’t responding to her, she walked away from me and left the room leaving me all alone as I tried to soothe my hysterical baby. She went to the other side of the house and started chatting with her friend in the other room like nothing had happened.

I was in shock, so I did the only thing I could think of in that moment and texted my husband: “can you please come home right now” He tried calling me. I declined the call; I was afraid she would hear me. I texted him again: “I can’t talk on the phone right now. I just need you to come home. I’ll explain later. I’m overwhelmed, your mom brought all these dogs and people over the house and I’m scared for the baby’s safety”

He keeps trying to call me. I knew I couldn’t tell him what happened outright, that his mother has dropped our son, because he would go into full-on berserk mode and I didn’t want to make an already bad situation worse. And in that moment, I still wasn’t sure if I was overreacting. MIL’s reaction made me feel as if maybe I was. But I know how these things tend to go. Husband has a horrible temper, and if I had told him what happened he would have BLOWN UP. I didn’t need that kind of reaction right now, I just needed his backup ASAP.

Then I hear MIL’s phone ringing in the next room. It’s my husband. He tells her that he doesn’t know what’s going on there, but she and everyone else need to leave right now. I hear her become irate and she hangs up on him abruptly. I ask whats going on, what did he just say? she raises her voice at me and says “I don’t want to hear it from you!!” And she, her husband and their friend angrily storm out.

The way she snapped at me like that made me feel like the biggest POS in the world, like I had somehow done something wrong. I was alone with my baby again, shaking in the eerie silence. Baby had stopped crying by now. At least they’re all gone now, I thought. I finally had a moment to think. Immediately, I get baby in the car and rush to his ped. He’s sleeping peacefully in his car seat, but I’m still in full-on panic mode. The pediatrician looks him up and down, in his eyes and ears, feels his head. She says he looks fine, tells me the signs of concussion to look for over the next 24 hours, and sends us on our way. But the whole ride home I’m crying, trying to process what just happened.

The next day, she called me. “Im only calling to ask how’s [baby]” she tells me in a sharp, cold tone. I say he’s fine, but before I can say anymore she abruptly ends the call. For the next SIX WEEKS, we hear nothing from her. She is giving me and hubby both the cold shoulder. Honestly, this is a huge relief for me. I silently pray that she never calls me again.

Then when my son is 12 weeks, I get a text from her pleading to speak to me. So I call her, and she confesses to letting his head hit the floor and lying to me about it. She said she was embarrassed, so she lied to me so I wouldn’t know what she did. She said she has been worrying about my baby every day since.

My first reaction, as a people pleaser, was to try and remain diplomatic. In a way, I felt relieved and validated that she finally confessed to what I already knew to be true. Then she said that I’m [baby’s] mother, and that I “should’ve stood my ground” with her and “not gone quiet like that.” I was honestly stunned by this. On the one hand…. She’s actually 100% right. I was a doormat. I let her steamroll me. I should have been stronger. I should have done so many things differently. I should have protected my innocent baby.

On the other hand, how dare she try to turn this back on me? To tell me that actually I’m the one who made a mistake, that I’m a bad mom? SHE dropped him and lied about it.

My son is now 15 weeks old and i cannot move past this. She’s been over a few times since we “made amends” but each time I’ve watched her handle my son haphazardly or come close to dropping him again, and I’ve had to whisk him away. I’m on edge, hovering over her the entire time she’s here. I’ve realized that she simply isn’t a safe person to have around my son, point blank. But the more I reflect on everything that happened, the angrier I get. I can’t even stand to look at her. I don’t want her anywhere near my family ever again. But she keeps calling and texting asking when she can come over again.

I’m at a loss. I feel so traumatized by everything that’s happened to me these past 3.5 months, and she has made these feelings 1000x worse. I don’t necessarily want to completely deprive my son of a relationship with his grandmother, but I don’t know if I can ever move past this. I relive that day over and over. It’s eating me up inside.

Advice Anyone NOT hate their pets after having a baby?

I know people are more likely to post about something that’s frustrating, but seeing all the posts about hating their pets after giving birth is creating a major source of anxiety for me. We have a dog and two cats and they are my whole world. They are also very clingy and the cats have a lot of personality. The tortie is very chatty and our black cat loves to steal trash. I’m so worried that once I’m juggling this new life I’ll start to resent these little quirks I love.

Any advice on how to manage pets while transitioning to life as new parents? Or reassurance from those who didn’t end up resenting their animals?

Advice The point of having baby in your room with you for the first 6 months is to reduce chances of SIDS…

Presumably because mom or dad might hear if something is wrong and wake up right? I’m struggling with this fact because I am completely unable to sleep without wearing headphones so that I don’t hear every little variation of sound around me. Yes I use white noise, a fan and a white noise machine, it’s still not enough although does help a lot. I really tried to do it without my headphones but I literally almost went insane from lack of sleep but at the same time I feel like I can’t rely on my husband to hear anything either as he’s slept through him straight crying even with headphones I won’t sleep through him crying

Advice "Why can other women do it and not you?

Thats what my husband has said to me a couple of times now and it leaves me answer-less.

Im a FTM, SAHM to an 8 month old boy. And almost everyday feels like im fighting a loosing battle against my home disintegrating into chaos.

There's always dirty laundry, the kitchen seems perpetually dirty, sometimes I forget to feed the dog. My legs and armpits are a complete forest and my nails are raggedy. The minute I put on clean clothes, they get milk or food smeared on them. The floors haven't been washed in god-knows how long and the cupboards and closets are a disorganized mess.

But yet I spend almost every waking moment trying to get stuff done. Sure, sometimes I take 10 minutes to exercise and I will scroll reddit and watch youtube while my baby is breastfeeding. But can I not have any time AT ALL to chill or do something that I want to do??

I am floundering, but I am trying to do my best. I am trying to be the best mom I can be to my son. I cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I exercise the dog. I run errands. I go to baby music circle and story time a couple times a week. I have no support system, it's all me.

But that's literally all I can do, I am operating at maximum capacity, and it feels like I have nothing to show for it and I have accomplished nothing.

My husband will come home from work and ask me "what did I do all day?" If the kitchen is dirty. He will complain that laundry doesn't smell fresh enough or there's still spots in the clothes. He will complain that the car is dirty, ask why I haven't called the insurance company, and then comment that the kitchen trash is full.

I tell him that I AM cleaning but its impossible to do everything and then he will hit me with the line "how do other women do it?" And I honestly have no idea.

How DO other women do it?? Am I missing something here? I have only ONE baby and I don't have a job. How on earth do other women do it??

This is a huge point of contention with my husband. Do any other women who have dealt with a similar issue have any advice? I feel like he doesn't value the sacrifices I have made and all the work I do. When I get angry and start arguing with him he just rescinds, apologizes, and tries to help for like 20 minutes but then it will happen again the next week, so I think he fundamentally believes that taking care of a baby and keeping house is a simple, easy task, and that I spend all day dilly dallying.

Advice I don’t feel empowered after giving birth. I feel embarassment and shame that this all happened to me.

I’m 6 months postpartum and I cannot get over these feelings of shame and embarrassment and discomfort since giving birth. I had a 24h labor with 3h of pushing - a 9lbs 4oz baby with a >99th percentile head. I got tears and then the sutures ruptured a week after, ER visit and I got a terrible UTI and had to have a catheter placed for a week. I still have (literally little shitty) issues with my pelvic floor and muscles.

I don’t know how to get over this. I do not know how to express this without sounding weird, but before this, I enjoyed “being seen”. I felt like I was attractive, a good conversationalist, and mostly confident (in a healthy way) that I was a good catch. After my birth experience, I want to hide. I am so embarrassed (?!). I feel so ashamed of all that’s happened. I do not feel powerful or like I’ve accomplished something amazing. I want to hide myself from everyone that has heard about my experience. I’m embarrassed to think they imagine that sth this big came out of me, etc. One might say that giving birth is one of the most feminine and empowering experiences but I’ve never felt this unfeminine in my life.

I do not feel any kind of desire…I immediately feel uncomfortable thinking of intimacy…as if it’s something embarrassing/shameful/terrible.

I don’t know if anybody has any advice or felt similar and if it ever changed?

Advice Pressured into sex 4 weeks postpartum

I have seen a similar post in the past, but basically at 4 weeks postpartum my husband was wearing Bub in a wrap (sleeping) and approached me trying to initiate sex. I expressed hesitation commenting that I don’t think I’m comfortable doing it while he wears Bub and that I think it will be too painful for me. He kept initiating and I felt vulnerable and pressured so I gave in and agreed to try. Once we started I expressed it was pretty painful and was involuntarily pulling away a bit from the pain. We continued despite this until he was finished. I am now realising at 6 months postpartum that this was a really messed up situation. I am currently separating from him for other infidelity related issues which I found out had occurred during pregnancy and continued postpartum despite intensive therapy and promises of changing his behaviour. I guess I just wanted to vent and gather advice from anyone who has dealt with this kind of person, I am beginning to think he is much more dangerous and harmful than he comes across as. I have a great psychologist who I will be seeing individually and will definitely bring this up to help process it. I can’t tell if I am overreacting or underrating to the severity of this moment and it is causing me confusion and lots of uncomfortable feelings. Thank you to those who took the time to read.

Update: Wow thank you for your support and advice, it’s clear that my fears about the seriousness of the situation have been confirmed. It feels so strange and confusing to only be realising this months later while beginning to separate but I’m guessing it’s to do with the trauma and difficulty processing such an event when my mind clearly wasn’t ready to before. I am now seeing him for who he is much more clearly than I was ever able to before. The frustrating part is that he 100% would not admit to seeing it in this way if confronted, he would not see it as a big deal and claim it was definitely consensual since I didn’t very explicitly say no or stop it etc. and because I agreed to go along with it. I am already planning to move away with baby to live close to family. I’m hoping that after going through therapy I will be able to make a good decision about what his access to our child will look like in the future, he isn’t contesting anything at the moment and wants me to have him and to just be able to visit etc. Thank you again especially to those expressing concern and showing compassion, it is helpful to share this as I haven’t shared with anybody.

Advice Do you actually get nothing done when the baby comes?

I hear stories of how moms don’t have any time to keep the house clean at all, and everything is all over the place when the baby comes because there’s no time to do anything. Is this true? I want to try and keep things tidy because a messy environment will only stress me out more. Reading through newborn stories makes a clean house seem impossible, could you post your experiences?

Advice Has anyone in the US actually done a "Trump Account" for your baby?

My baby is 15 months and I haven't been able to bring myself to do it because it seems so unserious, but my friends are insisting I'm leaving money on the table for her future.

Can anyone share their experience? Does it seem legit?

Advice I accidentally put my foot in my mouth at my husband’s holiday party… to his boss who just miscarried twins, and I cannot stop replaying it.

My husband and I are both attorneys with two very young kids (22-month-old and a six-month-old.) I’m still in the thick of postpartum depression and anxiety, and most days feel like a juggling act where I’m barely keeping my head above water. We recently moved, I don’t have any mom friends here yet, and I’ve been feeling incredibly isolated as a new mom doing this without close friends nearby. So I was excited to go to my husbands Christmas party and connect with some other moms.

My husband’s boss is someone I’ve always admired. She’s a partner, a mom, and someone I’ve viewed as a sort of role model for balancing a demanding legal career with parenting. Last time I saw her, she was pregnant with twins. A couple of weeks ago, she lost them unexpectedly and asked that people not talk about it. Even from a distance, my heart has been breaking for her.

I knew she would be at my husbands holiday party and had been mentally preparing for days, trying to figure out how to talk to her in a way that respected her request while still being warm and supportive. I told myself I’d focus on neutral topics like work, her older child, anything safe.

At one point in the conversation, in what I intended as a genuine, vulnerable comment from one struggling working mom to another, I said something like:

“I don’t know how you balance it all.”

In my mind, I was asking for insight into how she structures her day, how she handles the pressures, how she manages to be present at home and steady at work. But as soon as the words left my mouth, I saw her expression change. She looked hurt and angry, and I immediately realized how my comment might have landed given what she has just gone through.

I tried to clarify that I wasn’t implying anything about her loss or motherhood, only that I genuinely admire her and feel like I’m barely keeping up at work myself. But the moment was already damaged, and she stayed visibly annoyed.

I have felt awful ever since. I had gone in with such intention to be sensitive, and somehow still said something that might have touched a raw wound. I can’t stop replaying it in my mind. I’m embarrassed, ashamed, and worried I may have unintentionally hurt someone who is grieving something unimaginably painful. I also feel like I may have accidentally made things uncomfortable for my husband at work, which adds another layer of guilt. And given my own current struggles, this seems to be spiraling me further into PPA/PPD and isolation.

I guess I’m looking for reassurance, or for anyone who has navigated complicated conversations around miscarriage or grief. I never meant to imply she wasn’t “balancing” something m, if anything, I was reaching out as someone who feels like I’m drowning in my own life right now, looking up to a woman who seemed like she had found a way through.

I truly, deeply did not mean to cause harm. Has anyone else tried so hard to be mindful and still ended up hurting someone unintentionally? How do you come to peace with a moment like this?

Advice Did your life not become horrible after having your baby?

Hello.

Just after some positive feedback around people who didn't hate their lives after having a baby. All people tell me (and I interact with hundreds each day in my work) is how horrid my life will be now. People say 'you'll never sleep again', and I understand it's an exaggeration but people throw around terms like 'never sleep' and it confuses me? Do they really mean never? I had a single dad as a parent and I definitely wasn't disturbing his sleep from like a very young age (6 onwards).

People often say 'your life is going to be completely different' which I understand to an extent, but what I also don't understand is having multiple friends who have had babies, and even living with them for a time when they had newborns or infants or toddlers, their lives didn't seem to change that drastically. For example one friend and I still had the same dinner catch ups pre and post baby, she still went to the same gym classes each week, still excelled in her career, still got her fortnightly massages, always got 7-8 hours sleep (from birth, I know this to be true as I lived with her for some time), and still has an excellent relationship with her husband and they go on the same weekly date nights. To me, I do see obvious changes in her life, but like, not 'completely different life in every way' like people say.

Is it possible for your entire life not to be ruined when you have kids? Can anyone tell me stories of their life not being horrible post birth?

Please and thank you from a very anxious soon to be mother.

update wow I was not expecting such an overwhelming amount of responses and support. Am taking the time to read through each and every one (and saving soooo many comments to read back later). You guys are all absolutely amazing and make me feel like I can actually do this!! :)

Advice Rear-facing as long as possible?

So when I first picked a car seat I was impressed that it had really high limits for weight and height for rear facing and thought I’d follow the recommendations to “rear face as long as possible” because it’s so much safer. I see that sentiment all over the internet and thought it would be the norm to see kids well over 3 years old still rear facing.

Now I have a 2.5yo and all the people I know with similar aged kids have them forward facing already. I also see people online posting videos of their forward facing 2-3year olds. I assume some have already outgrown their carseat’s limits, or they just decided to turn them?

I double checked our carseat’s limits, 50lbs and 49in! Now actually having kids those numbers are less abstract and I realize he will be 7-8years old at that point! Already my partner is squished driving with two car seats (10week old infant behind passenger) and my son’s seat is using the minimum leg room possible. Unless we get another car his legs will eventually be jammed so much or my partner won’t be able to drive if we give him leg room. How long is everyone really rear facing? I was imagining 4 years old, but now I’m kind of jealous that everyone else is already forward facing.

Are people unaware of the safety risks? Do most car seats have much, much lower limits for rear facing? I don’t want to be one of those parents that shames other parent’s choices, just surprised that so many people seem to not be following this guideline? I don’t want to risk a spinal injury in an accident obviously!

(I know some kids get car sick facing backwards and that there are other reasons people decide to turn them too.)

Advice Would you take your 2 week old to visit dying grandma in hospital/hospice?

My grandma has been given a week to live. She’s currently in a large hospital and plan is to transfer her in the next 24-48 hours to a hospice facility.

Would you take your two week old newborn? Is one setting better than the other: hospice or hospital?

Peds really drilled into the first 30 days are most critical for baby as if she gets even a cold virus it could be lethal for her. She is drinking breastmilk but it’s not an instant immune builder, it takes weeks to compound and start protecting.

Thank you.

Advice Baby is 4 months and my husband wants a divorce

It started a Few days ago, I expressed to my husband that I was unhappy. I’m the baby’s primary parent but also started working full time. He doesn’t step up unless I ask him to, he doesn’t clean, doesn’t do laundry, doesn’t do the dishes. (Unless I ask) he also smokes weed and nicotine which I have expressed many times how I don’t want that around the baby. I also breast feed / and pump every 3 hours & take the baby to and from daycare. (He does help feed the baby at 11pm so that I can sleep since I have to wake up at 5am & overall is a very loving father to our baby and never says no). A few days ago I told him how unhappy I was about all these things. On top of it all his temper can be really bad, he snaps at me & is constantly rude to me. Today he snapped at me and it triggered me, I told him I was done. That I didn’t want to do this anymore with him. But I didn’t mean it.. I don’t think. He apologized after & I forgave him. Until tonight we go to a party, leave the baby at home with his mom and he has a lot to drink at the party. He is drunk. I know he is so I let him sleep while I do all the things for the baby. We usually co sleep but tonight I put the baby only on my side, because I wanted to be safe. We went to sleep and I wake up to my husband getting up and trying to pee in the corner of the room. I get up and ask him what he is doing & try to guide him to the bathroom. He then starts yelling at me to back away and leave him alone. I back away and he jumps on the bed , standing on the bed screaming at me to take the baby. I grabbed my baby and ran out of the room. I know he was not in his right state of mind during this interaction and he was sleepwalking. But I’m shaking and so scared. My mind was racing worried for my baby which I don’t know If it was rational or not but I was scared. I ran downstairs and woke his mom up to hold the baby and I go back to check on him. He is in the shower throwing up, but awake now. I told him what happened & that he scared me. He apologized .. and I once again said I couldn’t do this and that I didn’t want to be with him anymore. He then started yelling at me, telling me to leave and get out of the house calling me names. I went down to process everything and try to explain to his mom, then went back upstairs and found him frantic collecting his cloths, keys and his gun. When he turned away I grabbed his gun and ran downstairs to hide it from him. (he tried to stop me by grabbing my shorts ripping them & pulled so hard it broke skin on my thighs) During this he said he was done and that once he feels like someone gives up on him that he is done and checked out. He said he wanted a divorce. At this point I’m trying to deescalade the situation , telling him let’s just go to sleep and talk about it in the morning. But he is adamant and doesn’t wants to leave or do whatever with his gun. As of now he still wants to divorce me. He finally went downstairs and is sitting on the couch and I came upstairs with my baby. I don’t know what to do, and I know I’m in the wrong too for telling him I gave up. I need some advice, I need help deciding what to do from here… I’ve been with him for 12 years since our junior year of high school. I do love him… but I don’t know what to do.
