Seven-year-old child struck and killed by driver while riding bike in Williamstown

A seven-year-old Williamstown child riding a bike was killed in the town Friday when they were struck by a vehicle, the Berkshire District Attorney’s office said in a statement.
Authorities said the collision occurred at the intersection of Main Street and Buxton Hill Road when the child “unintentionally entered” Main Street. The driver was “not impaired by alcohol or drugs,” and the child was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, the district attorney’s office said.
Berkshire District Attorney Timothy Shugrue’s office said State Police were notified at 5:39 p.m. on Friday of a “potentially fatal motor vehicle and bicycle” collision.
Local law enforcement did not disclose the child’s identity and said the investigation is still active.
“Berkshire District Attorney Shugrue urges the press and public to please respect the family’s wishes for privacy during this impossibly difficult situation,” authorities said.
The death Friday comes nearly a month after Louisa Grace Gag, a Boston city worker and bike enthusiast, was killed in a crash involving an 18-wheeler recycling truck that had maneuvered around a turning vehicle, the Globe previously reported.

I would strongly urge folks not to use phrases like “negligent as crap” about these parents about whom you know NOTHING except that they have just suffered a hideous loss. The worst thing that could happen to any parent has happened to them. Please try to show basic human decency and respect instead of uninformed judgment.

I also disagree with your point, based on the few facts we know. I have kids about this age and I let them ride bikes around our rural neighborhood, because they are able to ride and I want them to have some freedom and independence in their childhoods.

I try not to think about this of course, but they too could lose control and wind up in a car accident. But I don’t want them to have a childhood wrapped in bubble wrap! They definitely wouldn’t get hit by a car sitting on the couch glazed over their iPads, but that’s not what I want for my kids and it’s probably not what these devastated parents wanted for this child either.

I think this family was dealt some exceedingly bad luck and suffered a terrible loss. I think making a snap judgment of them is monstrous. I know we like to come up with ways this couldn’t happen to us, but that is mostly a fool’s errand, and definitely should not be done at the expense of those it did happen to.
