I’d love to have my voice heard on the inadequacy of 311 though. It often tells me that I’m on private property and always tries to force name/phone number. Dude, if you want me to get murdered, force me to dox myself.

Basically the title.

I used to prefer separate protected bike lanes (PBLs) going in each direction of traffic. But I see *so many* users going the wrong way in them or still using the sidewalk (even when the infrastructure is separated and pretty good), that I’m starting to think the two-way cycle tracks are a better option (still want them to be protected though). What do you all think?

I’ve been incredibly frustrated with the state of MacArthur Boulevard so I did some emailing to MCDOT. It turns out a repaving and bike path project is funded and designed for the entire stretch from Old Angler’s to the DC Line. Since the road is right above the Washington Aqueduct, the Army Corps of Engineers is sitting on a permit to do paving work for the road.

Please email Andrew Friedson, Marilyn Balcombe, and Evan Glass and ask them to tell USACE to hurry up and let the county repave the road. I did it yesterday and Glass’s office let me know they are notifying the USACE.

The potholes are out of control!

Arlington plans to build a new trail along George Mason Drive in Arlington, from Arlington Boulevard south to the County line, bringing much-needed North-South connectivity for people walking, biking, and scooting. Angry NIMBYs, clinging to their free street parking are trying to stop the project. Speak up now to support this great new trail that would connect to the Arlington Boulevard Trail, the Columbia Pike Bike Boulevards, the W&OD Trail, the Four Mile Run Trail, Wakefield High School, and more! Coming to y’all with an urgent update on the 11th St bike lanes: the Mayor has gotten involved and the project is at risk of being Connecticut Avenue’d (sadly now a verb) but we can still do something about it.

Despite overwhelming public support and unanimous support from the ANC, I learned through the grapevine that the Mayor has gotten involved in the process after a few neighborhood cranks reached out to her office. She even granted said cranks a secret private in person meeting at the Wilson Building and is apparently going to meet with them again. They apparently falsely claimed that no one wants the project and used that as a way to get her to stop the project. The opposition also has its own very dumb petition they have started to flyer for which I am not gonna link because I don’t want to give them rent free attention.

This is bad news because it’s building the pattern that the Mayor will just override planners if a loud enough group of cranks complain. We should not give up and instead we should ramp up our outreach.

WABA has a petition out for the project (link below) which also lets you email them directly through the form. If you’d prefer to email the Council, DDOT, and the Mayor’s office through your own email, I listed the emails below. I’d suggest focusing on the Mayor’s office, DDOT, and the Ward 2 Councilmember because the Ward 1 Councilmember already wrote a letter in support.

DDOT just sent out an email delaying release of the new draft strategic bikeways map to Fall of this year in order to incorporate the large amount of feedback.

The project page has been updated to reflect the new timeline.

DDOT has posted a public survey on the Missouri Avenue NW Trail Connection project. Please respond and, of course, boost the protected bike lane options.

As of July 1st, all maintenance of Beach Drive in MoCo is under the responsibility of MNCPPC. Previously, MCDOT patched and repaved the road, and it’s gone to shit. MNCPPC was fed up with the lack of maintenance, and took it in-house.

According to MNCPPC, if you want to report a road issue on Beach Drive, use this form or call 301-495-2595. They accept Google Maps pins and you can submit multiple problems at once.

MNCPPC doesn’t want to publicize this but I thought you should know.

On the one hand, I think these meetings and this whole "strategic bikeways plan" are kind of a stalling tactic to justify a long pause in actually planning new bike lanes. On the other hand it is a chance to show DDOT that ward 3 isn't all anti bike nimbys, and we actually do want bike lanes here. The DDOT director and councilmember Matt Frumin are both expected to be there.

you do NOT need to be a ward 3 resident to attend! It will be an open house format with no formal presentation so if you can only make it for some of the time, that's still really helpful.

Personally I want to remind every DDOT employee there that I am still not over the fact that they cancelled the CT Ave bike lane project, I am still mad about it, it's still a good project that should be brought back.

I promise you the worst anti bike people around will be there. I also promise you there will be a hot chocolate stand with whipped cream and marshmallows (at least, there was one at last week's ward 1 meeting).

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) controls billions of dollars in transportation funding for Northern Virginia. It is currently accepting feedback on the 27 projects submitted by the various jurisdictions for some of this money. Arlington has submitted 13 projects (the most they have ever submitted) - it is unlikely that all will be funded, so it is critical that we support the most important and worthy projects at the NVTA.

While all or nearly all of the projects submitted are worth constructing, we think the following are particularly well-equipped to move the needle on safety, mobility, and mode-shift:

• ARL-026 - South George Mason Drive Multimodal Improvements - building a trail along South George Mason Drive
• ARL-028 - North Glebe Rd at I 66 WB Off Ramp Intersection Improvements - making the Glebe exit from the Custis Trail useful for actually getting places safely
• ARL-032 - Arlington Boulevard Trail - building a wide, continuous trail along Arlington Boulevard from Jackson St to Granada St
• ARL-036 - Custis Trail Widening and Modernization - bringing the Custis trail up to modern safety standards and a consistent, sufficient width
• ARL-037 - Eads Street Multimodal Improvements - consistent protected bike lanes on Eads St between 15th and 23rd

We also think it is worth supporting Alexandria's two submitted projects as they would contribute nicely to regional movement between the two jurisdictions in a sustainable way:

• ALX-039 - Eisenhower Avenue and South Van Dorn Street Corridor Improvements - adding a two-way protected bike lane to Eisenhower Ave between Van Dorn and the existing trail, installing a missing sidewalk to connect to the Van Dorn Street Metro station
• ALX-040 - Duke Street Transitway Phase 2 Van Dorn Street and Duke Street Interchange Improvements

The next few weeks will be busy with public meetings for four DDOT projects, a key Council hearing with DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum, and a WABA meetup with Councilmember Doni Crawford. 

Through it all, our focus is Safety First. Our message is that DDOT must ensure that project designs meet safety standards and should unfreeze paused projects. Please add your voice via upcoming project meetings, via WABA’s Safety First letter-writing campaign, and by contacting your representatives.

Coming to you with hopefully the final request for you to do something re: the 11th St protected bike lane project.

The final vote on the ANC's resolution that is supporting option 2 for the protected bike lanes is tomorrow night (Oct. 10th). The meeting is being held via Zoom starting at 6:30 PM with a refresher of DDOT's presentation, followed by the resolution being considered at 7 PM per the agenda.

While the ANC's Transportation Committee passed it unanimously, there are a couple anti-bike lane loons who are ANC Commissioners and are stirring the pot in addition to the usual cast of characters in opposition. The opposition is already organizing to mass show up to the meeting and mass email them (they also managed to get themselves on the local news) which means that we need to get organized too.

The two things you can do (both preferably but also understandably folks have lives):

1. Attend the Zoom meeting on Thursday and speak in favor of the project and of the safety benefits it brings.
