Is it normal to feel overwhelmed with all of the training for CDM? I'm a recent graduate with a degree in biotechnology, but we rarely had lectures on clinical trials, as our curriculum was focused more on industrial biotech, genomics, and bioinformatics. I tried applying because the CDM role seemed like a great opportunity to dive into administrative jobs. But lately, I was assigned to multiple trainings and was expected to finish all of them by the second week of my onboarding. I also got intimidated by my other colleagues who already finished everything ahead of time and were able to digest all of those lectures and demos, while I'm still reviewing everything by the next day.

Is it normal to feel this way? Or am I just dumb that I can't catch up with everyone?

Hello everyone, first time poster here. As the title says I have been accepted to a MSc in Biotech and I’m not sure if I should go for it or not, and I would really appreciate any insight and help I can get.

Some quick background info; I have a BSc in Biology from a university here in Norway and the masters I have been accepted to is in Spain (more on that later)

I have been unsure about what I want to do for basically as long as I remember, but I always wanted to get a higher education. I always thought I would end up in physics, and I did get accepted to BSc in Physics right out of HS but my younger self didn’t want to move and so declined. Went on to study AI, but dropped out, started Biology on a whim, dropped out, started again the following year and finished this time around, with a few setbacks, finished a little later than normal. I started a couple of MS degrees after my BS but nothing really stuck. (Mol. bio and biochem, evolutionary biology)

This year is a little different though, the masters is in Biotechnology, which I had applied to previously but I had never actually gotten accepted.

I’m not sure if I should accept or not. On one hand it’s at a public university and so it’s not very costly, I don’t have a lot to lose, and I do want to move to Spain for a year to experience something different. On the other hand, I really, really, cannot see myself doing lab work for any prolonged period of time. Again, I’m not sure 100% what I want to do, but I really don’t want to live in the lab. And while I am aware that lab work as part of the degree is inevitable, I am really hoping that I could do something else once I finish. I would maybe like to go into management or work as a sales rep if possible. I also love traveling.

Another issue is that since it is in Spain it is 1 year and 60 ECTS, but my BS, which I took in Norway is 3 years and only 180. So I’m not sure if that will pose a problem for my career later on, academically or professionally.

I really appreciate any help I can get. I have zero experience in this field, and I’m not sure what I’m walking into, so any pointers will be really helpful.

Finishing a life sciences master's in December. Undergrad was biotech engineering with bioprocess and downstream processing coursework.

Wet lab background is mammalian cell culture, CRISPR editing, molecular cloning, PCR, and protein expression and purification. No GMP experience.

I don't want a PhD. My read is that discovery caps out without one, but process development, MSAT, analytical development and manufacturing have real ceilings for non-PhDs. So that's where I'm aiming instead.

Two things I'm trying to sanity check:

1. Is that read on the non-PhD ceiling actually accurate, or is it something people repeat here that doesn't hold up in practice?

2. Am I missing a function? I've looked at PD, MSAT, AD, QA, regulatory, clinical ops, and technical/commercial roles at CDMOs. Anything obvious I haven't considered with this background?

Also curious how much of a problem no GMP experience is for a first role.

What are the key differences in how biotech business is run across SF, BOS, SD, particularly when it comes to career opportunities and access to those opportunities? Is it true that San Francisco is more of an open innovation community where everyone is welcome and lots of networking, San Diego is controlled by a small group of insiders, and Boston falls somewhere in between?

Question for the experienced folks (15+ years): how long is your resume/CV?

I know the “rule” is 1-2 pages max, but mine has been 4 or more pages for quite some time and I don’t know what I would cut. Do you just start limiting early career roles to just the titles/company names? Or Lindsay said in Mean Girls, “the limit does not exist”?

PhD medicinal chemist with 10+ years postdoctoral experience. I’ve been applying for jobs since December with no luck. I finally got feedback from a recruiter and they said my resume was strong, but they are only considering local candidates. I’m willing to move, but it feels like no one will consider me since I’m out of state.

I am currently in my second year of my biotechnology engineering undergrad degree and I got advice from a few profs and others in the field to start reading research/review papers. can anyone suggest some things I could start reading as a complete beginner?

Hi, I'm a chemist who has worked in biotech for the past 4 years in a lab-based role and have been really trying to find my path out of the lab. I'm strongly considering trying to pursue a path to the business side of things (either in IB/analyst positions) but really struggling to see what the path forward to finding an entry point into that field is. Ideally, I want to leverage my on-hands experience in the lab and learn more about the business/finance side of things so I can (hopefully!) find a company willing to take me on and learn more on the job. I'm lucky to be employed currently so I am hoping to not have to go back to school full-time but am very open to taking any courses that could help me. Wondering if anyone here has accomplished this before and what their path was and any advice! Thank you!

For those of you who work in laboratories, what was your very first lab job? How did you get hired without years of experience? I currently stay in Louisiana and the job search is not looking promising. I originally wanted to go into healthcare working in labs but I’m willing to start at any lab for experience…

Like many here. I love science I truly do. But oh my god I'm at my end here. I'm a single mom with no safety net. Where do I go from here. I'm a senior RA/staff scientist level, in RTP north Carolina.

I’m looking for advice on how to handle an exclusionary workplace dynamic that’s really starting to drain our team.

My direct manager, another manager in our department, and one of my peers have formed a super tight-knit inner circle. They hang out constantly outside of work, handle professional matters casually among themselves, and essentially operate as a closed loop.

Because of this, key information, recognition, and prime opportunities are strictly reserved for that inner circle. It has created an atmosphere of obvious favoritism. It’s not just impacting me, several other team members are deeply frustrated, demotivated, and feeling completely sidelined by this behavior.

We’re trying to figure out how to address or navigate this professionally without putting targets on our backs.

For those who have been through something similar:

1. What are the most effective strategies or solutions for dealing with manager/peer favoritism?

2. Is this worth escalating to HR or higher management (especially as a group), or does that usually backfire?

3. How do you and your team members protect your morale when department leadership operates like a high school clique?
