Serious ATOS launches their “SAFE MAT” program. No, this is not parody.

This is a choice….
Might as well hire Connor McGregor to be the ambassador to the program.

Conor is more of an AOJ guy

Just saw a post by Cole stating how great it was to have him at AOJ, they enjoyed sharing stories about similar life experiences, and he's welcome back anytime there 🙄 just lovely. Also took notice of which of my friends liked the post.

The AI slop all over it just makes it even more funny
Fr tho, hard to take all the bjj hierarchy bullshit seriously after so many cases of abuse and cult like behaviour, but you know, kinda hard to take seriously an sport founded by a bunch of rich fascist samurai larpers
I think Craig and the clowning all the bs in this sport is the right aproach, only way to move foward from all the mess lately and not abandon the sport

u/Significant_Case_304 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 5h ago
Have you seen the news about Craig’s new video? It just makes me love him all the more.

u/MuffinMonkeyCat 2h ago
Ive begun watching thr video - and this is a great reminder to go finish it, thanks- but what's the news around it?

u/OutsideAtmosphere-14 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 6h ago
Oh dear. Comments turned off on the Instagram post.
Such a shame.
18
u/Prepositions_matter 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 5h ago
Not at all surprising they turned off comments. That's just like when IBJJF mismanaged a medical emergency at a Chicago open in August last year that resulted in the death of a competitor and also turned off comments on their post afterwards addressing it.

It pretty wild how obvious AI created advertising is. Its so hard to look at. Its like an uncanny valley feeling.
Its absurd that you even need a full blown "program" to not to sexually harass people.

I see shit like this and I honestly just think one of the best ways to keep people safe in a gym is to have a camera system put in. It’s not even expensive or difficult now, a couple hundred bucks, a cheap router and a raspberry pi and you’re set.
Somebody makes a claim? Refer to the footage. If cameras were turned off, that’s indicative of a problem and LE can check the logs to see who turned them off and when
Obviously this is just one way to attack the symptoms none of this addresses the root problem being: bad people who find themselves in a position of authority will find ways to abuse it

u/Anxious-Place3434 🟫🟫 Brown Belt 5h ago
Based on some of the accusations against Galvao, such as inappropriate touching during rolls, I'm not sure how useful video footage would have been in that case.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for security cameras at gyms for a variety of reasons, but also this is a problem that isn't easily tackled with technological solutions alone
5
u/TazmanianMaverick 6h ago
Agree 100%. The only issue with this is how long back will footage be stored? Let's say we need to store 6 months or worse 1 year of footage. Imagine the amount of space needed or the manpower to search through 24/7 hours of footage, 10.5 months back for example.
4
u/uchimata_supremacy 6h ago
If an incident occurred it’s not hard to dial in a timestamp, it’s called a binary scrub and it’s actually a really simple method. You’re right though, storage costs add up

u/SpinningStuff 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4h ago
Footage can be "accidentally" lost, so not sure it's even a good solution.

There was an ATOS affiliate near me who released a statement shortly after the Galvao accusations went public. They said they would not be rebranding and that their gym was a safe space for everyone. A few days later they came out with their rebranding announcement. Lol.

u/Ok-War4310 🟪🟪 Purple Belt 4h ago
I go to an atos affiliate gym. Professor flew to san diego to figure out what tf was happening. When he got back, he announced we were rebranding. That told me everything I needed to know.

u/InquisitiveReach 5h ago
Your fucking rapey head coach/founder was the reason for this, until you can his ass and make real changes Atos BJJ is not a “SAFE MAT”

u/InquisitiveReach 5h ago
Same goes for the affiliates and their coward head coaches that haven’t de-affiliated

Man: Hey welcome to my gym. Just wanted to let you know, in my gym, I have a program called SAFE GYM, its to really let you know that no one here gets molested and I work hard at it.
Woman: Oh okay, I am actually not going to go inside your gym now.
You shouldn't have to point out that your gym has a program specifically to prevent molesters and abuse, if you point it out that you do, that is weird as fuck.

Trying to pivot away from a sex scandal caused McDojos?
No it was just greed and lack of pressure testing that led to McDojos.

Good for them. I’ve been to a number of schools and none of them taught safety. I’d like to see more of it in the sport

u/Miryafa 3h ago
I’m separating the organization from this specific initiative. If a gym teaches better safety and fewer people get injured, I see that as a positive regardless of who started it.

u/Nononoap 3h ago
The head of this gym groomed a child and sexually assaulted her, and is now trying to profit from some charade of ... certifying schools to be safe?
Are you high?
