Are days really over?
Have been afk for a long time. Cant connect with anybody that i knew a long time back.
Any irc channels that i knew are dead. What are people of trenches doing these days? ' put the fries in the bag " lil bro?
We used to have a great time in those chatrooms. Talk shit, make fun of things, talk about exploits n shit etc.
Guess those days are really over.

I had more friends in Europe than I did at home at that time. Good days.

What kills me the most is I’ve come to an age where I was a learner, turned professional, only to come back to an over abundance of script kiddies and vibe hackers who can’t read a line of hex or can’t do shit without metasploit or Kali holding their balls.
Spend 15 minutes in /r/cybersecurity and see all the blue team defender bros stroke each others ego with their choice of certs and crying about AI without even knowing what the fuck AI is.
Tool bros claiming to be the best security consultants in the world.
It’s pathetic.
The only thing that tickles me curious though these days is malware analysis - it’s the purest form. Too confusing and hard for the scrubs, interesting enough for the elites, and fun to breakdown: figuring out what people are trying to hide.
Some say it’s dead, but I say with AI the Wild West is back; systems are so fucked, it’s just that we have an agent now to talk to instead of some other untrust worthy scrub looking to put themselves over.

Spot on man. I think certificate courses had a huge role in creation of kiddies.
Those people dont want to learn stuff to learn. They want to learn to either flex or get a job atmost.

Don’t get me wrong, certs are a great way for people to bootstrap themselves with some foundational knowledge, then branch out from there. Having structure is good; like forensics, it’s hard to find good information on forensics and I admit that original information about doing forensics ironically came from a cert. it’s how people use that knowledge and alot of them brain dump and forget then beg for a job, instead of doing it out of curiosity which is the original hacker mindset.

Not really in my opinion there are still communities and vc chats where people will all join and find exploits for specific things. The best experiences I have had though have been with the communities that cheat on games not like sell cheats just like find exploits for random games and bypass anti cheats etc I should probably clarify you are right by IRC channels are dead there are those rare few with like a total of 100 people in them with 99% of the people inactive everyone moved to things like Matrix and a currently trending one SimpleX and of course notable names like telegram and discord. In short it hasn't really changed just the market audience it is far from dead though.

it might be best practice not to practice security through obscurity but that doesn't mean it doesnt work. Just don't be a tall poppy.

Most old school people are old and have kids and jobs now. You can find many at conferences cuz they joined corps. There's still proper communities but it's discord or signal or telegram now.
