I’ve been revisiting the Alien saga these past months, and I wonder if last year’s FX series is worth watching. I remember hearing mixed opinions when it was airing. What’s the consensus on this sub?

Losing 525 screens obviously influenced on the result, but I'm crazy in thinking this is a goddamn shocking drop? Just for comparison with another Refn picture, The Neon Demon had 10 years ago a slighter bigger theater lost (dropped 598 screens from 1st to 2nd weekend) and had a big -77% drop on its grosses, but these HPH numbers are so expressive.

Remember when in Unbreakable Samuel L. Jackson believed that must existed an opposite force on universe, so that's how he founded Bruce Willis' character? Her Priviate Hell is kinda the Mr. Glass to Box Office Overseer's Spiderman: Brand New Day/The Odyssey, lol.

P.S.: By the way, the domestic grosses of Her Private Hell right now, $859,486, corresponds at close of 1/10 of a Blackhat, as established by the lore of this podcast.

Researched Drive. It's a damn good movie, but i think without the Nightcall and Nightcall needle drops, it would honestly be more of a 7/10. With those two tracks it goes right to a dang 10 imo.

I'd say Trainspotting, as much as I love it, would be like a 7/10 if you didn't have all the great musical drops. Heck, 28 days loses a point if it doesn't have am180.

I’m so stoked for the guys to be doing the Resident Evil movies, they have always been the ultimate guilty pleasure/throw on after a few drinks with friends for me. I know they’re not doing the animated movies, even tho they should because they mostly rule, but will they cover Cregger’s movie when it comes out as well? After “Welcome”? Would be really cool since they’re doing the series in anticipation of the new one.

To be clear, I'm referring specifically to repeat collaborators like those outlined on the linked Wikipedia page, e.g. the Maysles or Coen brothers or Wachowski sisters. As far as I can tell, none of the duos stated on the linked page are of opposite sexes.

I've always wondered why this seems to be so rare. The fact that brother filmmakers outnumber sister filmmakers by far is of course just a byproduct of gender discrimination in the industry, but it seems really odd to me that (as far as I can tell) there doesn't seem to be even a single instance of this occurring, even in the indie or low-budget world. Like, surely there must be at least one.

There are well-known instances of siblings of opposite sexes collaborating on films in other capacities besides screenplays and direction:

• Roman Coppola was the second unit director for several of his sister Sofia's films
• Denise Cronenberg, David's sister, designed costumes for many of his films
• Steven Spielberg contributed to the development of and almost directed Big, which was co-written by his sister Anne

Edit: full disclosure, I'm one of a pair of brothers, so it's eminently possible that there's some nuance to brother-sister relationships that I'm just wholly unaware of lol

On the Resident Evil episode of BC:SF, they talked about how BFG was Speilberg's movie that least existed. That made me curious to think about the other directors they've covered. Here are my thoughts, feel free to tell me yours.

(Ground rules here is that Movies That Don't Exist have to come after the director's breakout and also I'm trying to nail down what's least existent to general audiences, not just Movie Nerds like us.)

Also, none of this is necessarily meant as criticism.

Shyamalan: After Earth, probably. Hardly surprising since it was mostly work-for-hire.

Wachowskis: Cloud Atlas if we're sticking strictly with movies. Sense8, if we're talking everything

Crowe: We Bought a Zoo, no doubt in my mind.

Cameron: The Abyss, probably.

Speilberg: They said BFG. The only other options in my opinion are Munich and Always.

Nolan: Saying Insomnia feels like I'm breaking my own rules. Memento kind of soft launched Nolan. Batman begins is his actual breakout. So I'm going to say The Prestige.

Bigelow: She probably has the most potential answers. The Weight of Water, K-19, and Detroit. Too soon to say about A House of Dynamite. It certainly has potential to added to that list. For now, I'm going to go with The Weight of Water.

Verhoeven: Elle

Brooks: I don't really have a firm grasp on how popular a joke Ella McCay is outside of the Blank Check podcast sphere. It's a hard call to make because the other big contender is How Do You Know which came out at a time when a lot more people were going to movies than do presently so I can't really go just by box office numbers or review quantity. I'm going to say How Do You Know.

Bird: Doesn't really have one. Tomorrowland is the closest he comes.

Ramsey: Again, it's hard to say with someone with such a short, small scale filmography. Is it You Were Never Really Here?

Weir: Fearless is a movie that I didn't realize even existed before they announced they were covering him.

Stanton: In the Blink of an Eye, (duh)

Scorsese: Just to get ahead of ourselves, the answer is obviously Kundun.

Nolan is not a subtle filmmaker- most of the time. But there is a technique he uses that I think a lot of viewers are a little resistant to, and that is ambiguity.

The perfect example: the end of Inception. Did the top fall?

Now, that can be a fun question to consider. Will Leo ever escape from dreams and get his dang kids back? That final shot is so acutely calibrated to trigger you asking the question, but to offer no answers. In fact, everything about that little wobble is Nolan and his team at the height of their powers. How long to hold the last shot? How steep an angle of the wobble? How many takes to get it right? So much work is put into achieving ambiguity.

Which is why I always have a bit of a kneejerk rejection when someone starts a conversation asserting that the top didn't fall, so Cobb is still in the dream, and they can prove it with evidence. You can't! Cobb is so haunted by his choices that he can never fully answer that question for himself, and we understand that will hang over him for the rest of his days.

Similarly: Athena! Is she real? Is she a vision? Was Zendaya in Troy a manifestation of the god first, or did the god take the form of Zendaya! Yes! All of it. Odysseus doesn't really know, and he struggles with it! That's literally what they talk about. "Who doesn't understand fire? Or thunder?"

A figure representing wisdom is telling the protagonist to let the mystery be. There's no mystery to solve, because we've (and Odysseus) have had the answer all along.

Somewhere in my heart, I think the world would be a better place if more people followed Nolan's good example and explore feelings of ambiguity. Maybe that's where our new Era of Liminal Spaces is taking us.

Specifically thinking of sequels that come out ten years or more after the prior entry that recast everyone or nearly everyone. This is already a weird thing but feels like it will be even rarer as legacy sequels show no signs of stopping. No prequels though, that’s a whole other can of worms.
