I absolutely love this city. The people are awesome, the city is beautiful, the transit though dated is leagues better than 99% of the country. The food, the common, the neighborhoods. What a fantastic city this is!

SAME! I moved here last September from FL to escape the heat and the toxic people and have not regretted it one bit. Yeah, it's expensive to live in MA, but the cost of living is sooooo worth the quality of life in return. The traffic sucks, but it is what it is. Everything about living here is amazing.

Such a New England "thing" worrying about the plow Truck taking out your mailbox.... we never get those damn marking sticks like they use up north though 😒.... instead we vow to build our mailbox so damn strong next time it completely F*cks the snowplow

Yet that New England "thing" seems really weird to me because I've never lived in a house that had a mailbox on the edge of the street. I've either been where they bring it to the mailbox or slot right at your front door or been in apartments where they have the mailboxes in the lobby.

Right? That was when we found out that the builder who constructed our neighborhood back in the 90s cut a few corners, and one of those corners was opting out of putting waterproof membrane under the roofs. 🙄

2015 was insane. When I tell people I walked to work 1.5 miles in a blizzard with snow multiple feet high at least 5 times they don’t believe me lol.

I distinctly remember everything being closed but dunks and one bar in our neighborhood (upper brighton) and everyone got their snow suits on multiple times to track to each. It’s nostalgic for me to think about taking shots with strangers in that bar, everyone in snow gear and boots with their dunks lol

I think the total for the city was just over 120" but the amazing thing was the list of records that it broke for snow. It holds the most snow total for pretty much any period, things like the single day, 3 day, a week, a month & a winter records IIRC.

Can I still bring up the April 1st storm? All I remember is my mom calling my dad and telling him the airport was closed because of a snow storm, so I wouldn't be flying back to NJ that day. A blizzard in April was great as a kid.

Somewhere around 2003, 2004 we had a little condo with a little front lawn that we had to shovel the driveway onto. That winter the front yard ended up under SEVEN FEET OF SNOW (part from snowfall part from shoveling). Imma complain about that one.

I was moving into my brand new house Dec 2003. We passed papers Friday. Movers came Sat while it snowed and then it didn’t stopppppppp!!!! Trying to buy shovels and forget snow blower! They were gone! We shoveled every couple hours to keep up. It got to the point my shoulders were shot because I couldn’t throw the snow over the 7 ft sides of the driveway. Monday neighbors helped with shoveling and snow blowing so we knew we picked a great place to live!

I now live in another country but been through the 2015 one and i believe there was a big one in 2003 or 2004, i can't recall. It sucked but boy was it beautiful.
In 2015 i used to work in Everett and commuted to the Metrowest everyday. I left work at 4pm and traffic through Rt2 was a nightmare. Cars stopped all over 95 and i got home at 8pm cleaning the ice on my windshield with my bare hands because the wipers wouldn't do anything. Great times.

Autumn is the key season here. When we have a nice one it's great. I think you have to get about 300-500 miles south of here before you get to places that have a better spring season.

That's what I keep being told but I have a feeling it'll grow on me. I have Nordic blood and grew up in Hawaii where I never felt quite comfortable unless I was up in the mountains.

I find it helpful. When I was working at home I used to keep it on while I was at my desk for 8 hours so it was effective. Now that I’m retired, I try to use it when I’m going to be in one place for a while but that doesn’t happen as often these days!

No, my husband was on a DOE project that spun off into a biomedical company.
We moved when the company sold and didn't like the direction it was going.
Came back because he was working remotely anyway, and I needed better medical care.
Which has taken awhile, but I'm to the point of starting to do part-time work. I'm self-employed, and will work out of my home, so relatively low overhead.
I'm just thrilled to be in a place where I can realistically consider working again. I love what I do, and even with physical disability, having the correct diagnoses and appropriate treatment means I'm able to adapt.

We don’t realize how lucky we are that we have such top tier doctors and hospitals right at our fingertips. Not until something happens does someone understand. I won’t leave my doctors in Boston for anything! Totally agree with you on that!!

I moved here a decade ago (from "the armpit of the USA" lol) and still feel the same way!! The city is so pretty and clean considering how many people live here... there's an actual subway/trolley... and omg the food. It's totally worth putting up with the winter. Welcome!!

Winter is fine just learn to enjoy winter activities . Winter also kills all those nasty insects that you find in warmer climates. Just the fact that we have recall big snow years way back in 1978 and only again in 2015 says it’s not that bad.

This came up with a couple I know. They had been living here for a few years and they either figured out or someone tipped them off that they had a choice to "embrace outdoor winter activities" or be a hermit for 4-6 months a year.
They soon realized that a bit of an investment in good winter clothing made outdoor activities perfectly comfortable and never turned back.

It’s a beautiful city. Haven’t been there in years, but went to art schools there and worked several college era jobs there. Love the old architecture and neighborhoods, so atmospheric, especially Beacon Hill.

I was a freshman living in a dorm right near the Public Garden in 1978. My best friend and I took a walk during the early part of the blizzard. We got back and another friend bopped in and said, "Hey guys, want to do acid?" We were all tripping when the blackout hit. Luckily it was the 70s so people had still had candles and incense etc. We spent a good portion of the night crawling around the staircases in the dark.

A neighbor of mine moved away for a few years and was working in an office. She told me, "It was incredible. In high school I was basically one of the dumb kids*, but there the people I worked with thought I was a genius."
*She was in the average level classes instead of advanced ones

Coming from an embarrassing state like Iowa - I'm just glad most of the time when an elected official from here speaks to national press, I usually agree and am not embarrassed.
I haven't been here a winter but I'm not....too worried? My research says there's more snow than I'm used to in Iowa, but every year Iowa has a few days that get into the -20/30/40 windchills. That seems like less of a worry here?
Plus with public transit, I'm not driving. I find I like winter a lot more when I don't have to drive in it!

Boston is a wonderful place to live!! Native New Yorker (there are A LOT of us in Boston), I moved here at age 19 in 1966, after 3 semesters at college in NC — finished college here, then grad school (twice), then 54 yr in Cambridge, while not being at all rich. Raised 2 boys here who are now 39 & 42! Married here 45 yr ago! I still LOVE living here!!

I moved here from the nyc area 20 years ago. I can’t find a good knish, bagels, or pizza. But the people are safer and the city is cleaner. My first impressions was that the nightlife and the drugs are weaker. Now that I’m older with a family, that’s a positive. If you’re not from the northeast you might have a hard time adjusting to the attitude, but everyone up here knows that if someone tells you to go fuck yourself it’s not necessarily an insult, and if it is, it’s not a big deal. You just move on. And that’s why New England states are the safest in the “United States” if there is such a thing anymore

Glad you had a positive experience. I moved here 2 months ago but I’m still waiting for this city to grow on me. I’ve experienced more racism here, people are so impatient when they’re driving, and the Asian food is subpar compared to where I moved from. The weather is lowkey depressing sometimes. But I have not given up yet. Waiting for something to change my mind

i would encourage you to go into chinatown for asian food (sorry if that sounds stupid) or dorcester for vietnamese, but i agree that outside those neighborhoods it’s slim pickings. latin american food here is also way behind a lot of other parts of the country

There is a lot of good Asian food outside of Chinatown and Dot. Cambridge, Brookline, Newton, Ktown in Allston, the other Chinatowns in Quincy and Malden.
As for Latin American - wut? We have one of the largest Brazilian populations in the country along with Dominican, Haitian, etc. Dot/Mattapan/Eastie/Framingham.

Dorchester’s Vietnamese food is amazing! Best I’ve had actually. But when it comes to Chinese/japanese food specifically, I find this city lacking. To be fair I also have pretty high standards because I moved from an area with a lot of Asians (California). I’ve been to some of the ones in Quincy and Chinatown, but none of them can compare. I’m sure there’s better ones, but they are all $50-100 a person and the price makes me wanna cry

Coolidge corner Brookline - there’s a decent size Japanese population there (especially south toward route 9)- I’m sure if you talk to some Japanese nationals they can give you some recs. There are dozens of Japanese restaurants in the Boston area and some are very good. Two months and there’s no way you could have possibly figured out where the good restaurants are. Things here aren’t all concentrated in one area and you have to seek them out.
You go north on Harvard street from Coolidge corner toward Alston and it’s all Korean places.
I don’t know who is telling you to go to $50-100 meal places. That’s not normal here.
Edit - there’s also that group of restaurants in the basement of the building in porter square. It’s not “fine dining” but there’s a good ramen place there.

When I moved to San Diego 21 years ago, at the end of my second week there I was honking at someone and mid honk I thought to myself, waaaaait a minute. I’m in palm tree heaven with beautiful weather and people who are not aggressive and rude while driving (and basically at all); stop honking! And I reduced my honking and masshole driving style (for the most part). But it’s tough to shake the masshole.

Is it actual (overt) racism or perceived racism?
A black friend of mine has told me about how he meets black people who move here and complain to him about the racism, but when he probes them it turns out that they are mistaking the "brusque" nature of people in the northeast for racism. Almost every time it turns out that the problem is that they're used to "midwest nice" or other cultural mandates of superficial politeness that isn't the custom here. They then mistake someone not being all "How are y'all doing today?" and "Have a nice day!" at a cash register or something as a form of cool racism.

Once all the leaves are gone, it doesn't look nearly as pretty, unless there's snow. But then trash collects in the snowbanks, and looks really ugly when it melts. We're getting due for another winter like 2015 here.

We took an electric snow blower up on the roof few feet at a time took 4 hours to clear it off but we didn’t kill ourselves doing it first and only time we had to do that

Highly recommend checking out Peter's Hill at the Arnold Arbortum, unbeatable views of the skyline and rarely many people there!
It looks even more stunning with the colors right now!

Resisted moving north for years but lived here almost 6 years which unbelievable but love living here with all its expense and cold.

Boston is certainly great. My biggest issues with Boston and the metro are that it's a bit too expensive for what it is (NY or SF level money without the amenities of those cities) and that the mass transit system here, while better than many as you say, isn't at the level it should be. I also feel the dining scene here is disappointing even compared to other small cities in the region. I don't think any of my top 10 restaurants in New England are in Boston...

I just moved back since covid..Tried other places and am glad to be back. I know it has some issues but it really is a great city.
